The August issue is missing.] January, 1932 Vol. 9; #1 Recently the McGOWAN school house was purchased by the people living in the Fairfield school district for the purpose of having community church services. Deaths: Captain George THOMPSON, a former resident of Hyde, living on Tiney Oak Road, moved to Fort Landings, near Columbia. Recently his 4 year old child went out to meet the children coming home from school and fell into a ditch and drowned, unknown to the family until they missed him. He drowned on January 7 and was brought back to Hyde and buried. [In Memory Of by Rebecca SWINDELL and R.S. SPENCER, JR. indicates that this child was Harold Glen THOMPSON who was born October 26, 1927 and died January 7, 1932. His father was William George THOMPSON and his mother was Rosa Odessa WILLIAMS. He was buried in the George Hodges WILLIAMS cemetery on Tiney Oak Road.] Harry SPENCER of Engelhard died at the hospital in Washington, Monday, January 11. He had complications of mastoiditis, meningitis and stroke on one side of his face. He was unable to undergo an operation. He was a member of the Christian Church. He was brought back and buried at Engelhard. He leaves a wife and a widowed mother and several brothers and sisters. Harry was a very quiet and industrious young man who had a host of friends. He oystered for a living. [In Memory Of by Rebecca SWINDELL and R.S. SPENCER, JR. states Harry Lee SPENCER was born in June of 1905 and died June 11, 1932. His father was Garland Theodore SPENCER and his mother was Addie Jane O’NEAL. He was married to Eva Mae O’NEAL.] Mrs. Joseph Anna BERRY, daughter of Joseph and Sallie A. SWINDELL, was born April 5, 1850 near Lake Landing. She lived there until five years ago when they moved to Fairfield, where she lived until grown. She later moved to Swan Quarter where she was married to the late Alexander BERRY. She died January 8 at 10 a.m. at the age of 82. She leaves three children: Mrs. Leta B. BROWN and Mr. A.B. BERRY of Swan Quarter, and Mrs. G.V. CREDLE of Norfolk, Virginia; also 9 grandchildren. She was a consistent member of Providence M.E. Church, South. She was the last of 10 children. She was buried at Soules cemetery. On December 17 after only a day and night of sickness, Alice Reginia, the 14 month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Closs GIBBS, died with heart trouble. The child was buried at Amity cemetery. February, 1931 Vol. 9; #2 Golden Wedding Anniversary: Mr. and Mrs. S.E. BAUM of Fairfield, celebrated their 50th anniversary of married life by inviting a host of their friends and relatives to their home on the evening of February 8, 1932. Marriages: Alvin P. Born to Mrs. Harry SPENCER of Engelhard, a girl. [See Jan. 1932 for her husband’s death] Chapter of Sorrow: Mr. Jim SIMMONS of Norfolk, Virginia, a former resident of Fairfield, recently died at Norfolk, February 9 and was brought back to Fairfield and buried on February 11 in Fairfield Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, two sons: Edward and Lee, both of Norfolk; two brothers: Leslie SIMMONS of Belhaven and P.C. SIMMONS of Fairfield; also 2 grandchildren. Mr. SIMMONS was the 5th to died in his family in the past 8 years, his father, mother, aunt and brother, having preceded him. He held his membership with the Baptist church. March, 1932 Vol. 9; #3 At 7 o’clock on Monday evening, February 8, the doors of the home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Emmet BAUM were thrown open to a host of friends and relatives, the occasion being their golden wedding anniversary. As each guest arrived he was asked to inscribe his name in a beautiful gold an white registration book. Mr. BAUM looked very happy beside his bride of long ago, who was dressed in midnight blue silk with a shoulder bouquet of yellow snapdragons. A very interesting contest, “A Romance of Fifty Years Ago”, was prepared by Miss Helen LAVENDER. She also wrote a beautiful tribute to the bridal couple which was read by their granddaughter, Mrs. Max GUTHRIE. An ice course and a sweet course were served to the 55 guests. As we go to press the LINDBERGH baby has not been found. World-wide efforts are being made by individuals, groups, newspapers and radio. Our sympathy goes out to the father and mother as they anxiously wait, hoping and praying, listening and watching, for the return of their kidnapped baby. STEWART writes a letter stating that on May 28, 1932 he will complete 10 years of service as missionary and pastor in Hyde County and there has been born to his home two girls and two boys. SWINDELL, one of Hyde’s oldest and most prominent citizens, died in a Washington hospital resulting from complications from several diseases. He was registrar of deeds at Swan Quarter for 8 years; served as a steward in the Methodist Church there for 50 years; was a member of the Swan Quarter Masonic Lodge and was one of the section’s largest farmers. He was nearing his 84th birthday. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Iredell Credle SWINDELL of Swan Quarter; four daughters: Mrs. Herbert STILLEY and Mrs. H.A. SWINDELL of Washington, Mrs. Lelia BRINN of Lillington, N.C. and Mrs. Herbert Griffin of Swan Quarter; two sons: Dr. L.H. SWINDELL of Washington and E.S. SWINDELL of Durham, N.C. Mrs. Eben SAWYER answered the call upward on April 28. She had been an invalid for several years. She was a member of the Rose Bay Baptist Church, attending as long as she was able. She was 71 years old and leaves to mourn her going, a husband, 5 brothers, a son, Mr. Alton SAWYER, and a daughter, Miss Jennie SAWYER, both of Rose Bay. Funeral services were conducted by her pastor and her body was laid to rest at Wade’s Point, her former old home place. A lengthy poem written in Memoriam to Andrew P. The wedding took place in the Meredith College auditorium. There will be the usual Fourth of July celebration at Baum-Town. The group meets at the home of Mr. Johnnie NEAL this year. July, 1932 Vol. 9; #7 A lengthy letter from O.L. WILLIAMS thanking the 1008 citizens of Hyde County who voted for him in the primary held Saturday, July 2. Mrs. Mary SPENCER died June 24, 1932 at the age of 82. She was born September 7, 1850. Her husband, Kit SPENCER, preceded her by four years. Mrs. SPENCER had been a shut-in for several years. She was a member of the Christian Church. Services were conducted by Rev. Everett HARRIS. She was buried at Fulford cemetery. She was born and raised in Hyde county and had lived at Engelhard all her life except one year which was spent at New Bern. There are left to mourn her going five children, W.J. SPENCER, J.M. SPENCER, S.D. SPENCER, R.S. SPENCER, and Mrs. Alice COX. Also 24 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Marriages: Mr. John G. CARAWAN, JR. to Miss Claudia E. Hunt PARKER opened the fall term of Hyde County Superior Court. Judge Garland D. (sic) MIDYETTE was scheduled to hold this court, but met with sudden death. Also Mr. Drummond SADLER, the court crier, died Sunday night, October 3. These men are missed from this session of court. [A Pasquotank death certificate indicates Garland Eugene MIDYETTE died in Elizabeth City, N.C. while holding court on September 20, 1932. He was born on January 17, 1874 in Fairfield to Thomas Gibbs MIDYETTE and Margaret Gray SPENCER. He was married to Mary BUXTON. In Memory Of by Rebecca SWINDELL and R.S. SPENCER, JR. states William Drummond SADLER was born December 31, 1876 to James B. SADLER and Lydia F. CUTRELL and died October 3, 1932. He was married to Mary Alene SPENCER.] BLOUNT & MIDGETTE have just completed their new store and warehouse on Second & Gladen Streets on the Atlantic coast line in Washington, N.C. November, 1932 Vol. 9; #11 Death: Mr. W.M. JARVIS, at Rose Bay, known by many as “Uncle Bill” JARVIS, had a stroke of paralysis on Sunday night, November 6 and died Thursday morning, November 10. He was born January 19, 1850 and would have been 83 years old his next birthday. He leaves to mourn his going a number of nephews and 5 grandchildren. He was buried at North Creek Primitive Baptist church. He had never affiliated himself with any church. He was the first to die as a member of the Beaufort-Hyde Burial Association. His burial expenses cost him 25 cents as he was the first member to die. December, 1932 Vol. 9; #12 Chapter of Sorrow: Born to Mr. and Mrs. Earl BERRY of Engelhard, a son on October 25.
