MIDYETTE to Miss Nellie Mae DAVIDSON, both of Fairfield—Dec. 25, 1934 Curtis DUNBAR to Miss Katherine DUNBAR, both of Leechville—Dec. 26, 1934 Births: Rev. and Mrs. L.D. MUNN OF Oakboro, N.C., announce the arrival of Sylvia Lorraine on November 19, 1934. She weighed 7 pounds. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Ralph MIDYETTE, Joseph Dixon who was born November 11, 1934. A hard-surfaced road now extends from Swan Quarter to Engelhard. Near the terminus of this road is being constructed an ice and lighting plant by the Pamlico Ice & Light Co. Mr. P.D. MIDGETT, JR. of Wanchese on Roanoke Island, is in charge of the new plant. He was a Duke University student four years. He gave two years with Durham Public Service Co., two years with the Consolidated Service Plant—Water, Light & Telephone at Chapel Hill and eight years with Virginia Electric Power Co. He says they hope to have the plant operating by April. Chapter of Sorrow: Charlie COHOON died December 2, 1934. He worked with Mr. Closs GIBBS from the time he was 14 years old. He died at the age of 40 after a few weeks of sickness. He was buried at Fulford cemetery. A wife and two children survive him. [Charles Benjamin CAHOON was born Feb. 17, 1894. He was the son of James Henry CAHOON and Nancy Jane GIBBS. He was married to Inez McKINNEY.] Funeral services were held for C. Leo GIBBS at Amity Methodist Church on Friday at 2 o’clock. The rites were conducted by Rev. J.L. STANFORD, pastor of the Methodist Church of which the deceased was a member. Interment was in Amity cemetery. Mr. GIBBS was found dead on the Swan Quarter-Engelhard highway early Wednesday morning. A post-mortem examination by Dr. J.E. MANN revealed that he had been killed by either a blackjack or brass knuckles. The deceased was born, reared, and lived near Middletown and was a farmer and merchant. The pallbearers were: S.M. FISHER, DeWitt LAVENDER, J.E. SWINDELL, J.D. SILVERTHORNE, Murrell GIBBS and Ernest GIBBS. He is survived by his widow who was the former Miss Dora COX of Wysocking; two sons: Cecil and Russell of Lake Landing; three daughters: Mrs. Joe SWINDELL of Middletown, Miss Claudine GIBBS of Newport News, Virginia, and Miss Sidney GIBBS of Lake Landing; two brothers: O.B. GIBBS of Lake Landing and Jule GIBBS of Farmville; and his mother, Mrs. Margaret GIBBS of Lake Landing. [In Memory Of by Martha Rebecca SWINDELL & R.S. SPENCER, JR. states Charles Leo GIBBS was born May 2, 1879 and died Dec. 12, 1934. He was the son of Charles William GIBBS and Margaret Ann GIBBS. He was married to Dora Lima COX.] Archibald JOHNSON, 75, for nearly forty years editor of “Charity & Children” publication of the Mills Home in Thomasville, died early Thursday morning after several years of declining health. He is survived by his wife, a son who is also in the newspaper business, and four daughters. Rev. S.S. McGREGOR of Gatesville, N.C. who assisted Rev. E.R. STEWART in Hyde County in three revival meetings in the past six years, died at his home of cerebral hemorrhage on Tuesday, January 15, 1935. He was pastor of four large country churches in Gates County. He is survived by a wife and four daughters. Mr. Harold SMITH came to Hyde County 18 years ago at the request of Mr. GRAVES to take charge of the new hotel at that time and operate it. Mr. SMITH was a Norwegian and was connected with the pumping plant. He had charge of the post office at New Holland for a while. He died at the age of 64, on December 29, 1934. He leaves a wife and friends. [In Memory Of by Martha Rebecca SWINDELL & R.S. SPENCER, JR. states Harold SMITH was born in Oslo, Norway on January 16, 1870. He was the son of Christian SMITH and Martha _______. He was married to Martha ELIXSON. He was buried in Soule cemetery.] Mr. Ed WATSON, a resident of Hyde County, died January 1 at the age of 53. He suffered with asthma. He leaves a wife and 7 children. Interment was made in Fairfield cemetery with R.L. HARRIS, his pastor, officiating. [In Memory Of by Martha Rebecca SWINDELL & R.S. SPENCER, JR. states Samuel Edward WATSON was born to Samuel Ervin WATSON and Mrs. Martha Ann Williamson McGOWAN in December 1880 and died January 1, 1935. He was married to Meta Mann CUTRELL.] Attorney General BRUMMITT died Saturday afternoon, January 14, at Raleigh. Mr. BRUMMITT was for many years a deacon at the First Baptist Church in Oxford. February, 1935 Vol. 12, #2 Mrs. Kizzie ARMSTRONG is very sick with pneumonia. She is above 90 years old and has been in failing health some time. Birth: Born to Mr. and Mrs. Murrell SWINDELL, a fine boy weighing 10 pounds. He was born January 30, 1935 and they call him Bobbie Deane. Death: A happy little boy left home for school on the morning of December 5, 1934. He was the picture of health to everyone. When he left school he stopped to play with a group of friends. He had only been playing a few minutes when he dropped to his knees. When his friends reached him they saw something was wrong and called for help. He died instantly of heart failure. This little boy was Marvin CUTHRELL who was born October 11, 1927. He leaves to mourn his going, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.M. CUTHRELL; two brothers, Reginald and Charles; one sister, Christine; and his grandparents. March, 1935 Vol. 12, #3 Deaths: Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the residence of John W. TOPPING, age 76, who died at his home in Pantego on Monday morning about 10 o’clock of a paralyzed throat and tongue. Interment was in LATHAM graveyard. Surviving are two sons: Scott and Edward TOPPING; and four daughters: Misses Mina, Lessie and Elizabeth TOPPING and Mrs. Adrian HERRIND of New Bern. On January 28, 1935, the death angel visited the home of Mrs. J.M. ALLIGOOD and took a beloved member of the family, Christopher Columbus CULLIFER. On February 2, 1876 he married Luvina ROSCOE (should be RASCOE). They lived together until October 30, 1933 when she departed this life. He was taken with pneumonia on January 20 and remained in this stage until his death. He was a deacon of the Primitive Baptist Church for a number of years. He cared for a number of orphans and widows that were connected with his family. He leaves one half-brother, D.L. BARNETT of Galveston, Texas; one sister, Mrs. L.C. GRAY of Salvo; three children: J.W. CULLIFER, Mrs. D.M. CARROW and Mrs. J.M. ALLIGOOD, all of Scranton; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by Elder Jabie HARRIS. [Written by request of a grandchild, Mrs. J.M. RABURN] The Engelhard Banking & Trust Co. will open a branch at Swan Quarter. This bank stood the test of depression when others closed, under the leadership of W.M. HOOKER, JR., deceased. His successor, M.A. MATTHEWS, is making a splendid cashier. On Monday, March 18, a host of friends gathered at the Baptist parsonage to give a birthday shower to Mrs. Sarah WATSON. She became a Christian and united with the Fairfield Baptist Church when she was 65 years old. [In Memory Of by Martha Rebecca SWINDELL & R.S. O’NEAL of Scranton—March 27 Mr. Thaxton SATTERTHWAITE caught in his nets on April 8, a sturgeon weighing nearly 400 pounds. It measured 8’6” in length. It sold for $40.00 when it reached shore. Deaths: Tom DUNBAR died March 23 at New Lake. He was buried at the I.B. DUNBAR place on New Lake. Burial services were conducted by Rev. R.L. HARRIS. [In Memory Of by Martha Rebecca SWINDELL & R.S. SPENCER, JR. states James Thomas DUNBAR was born December 27, 1871 and died March 23, 1935. He was the son of Benjamin L.S. DUNBAR and Jane Elizabeth DUNBAR. He was married to Maude Elizabeth ARMSTRONG. He was buried in the DUNBAR-LIVERMAN cemetery on Alligator Lake Rd. #1303.] At the ripe old age of 90 years, Mrs. Emaline SWINDELL died April 6 and was buried near Middletown. She was the daughter of Carney GIBBS and Alpha “Affa” SPENCER. She was married to James Dixon SWINDELL.] May, 1935 Vol. 12, #5 Marriages Reported: Charlie Lee PATRICK of Engelhard to Miss Amy Lee BALLANCE of Lake Landing—April 6 Thomas S. BURRUS, JR. of Fairfield to Miss Minnie Lee SMITH of Scranton— April 26 Deaths: After several days of illness, Mr. Tom WILLIAMS of Lake Landing Township, died May 8 and was buried May 9 at the WILLIAMS graveyard. For a number of years he operated a sawmill near what is known as Rhodesville. Services were conducted by Rev. W.P. ARMSTRONG and Rev. G.C. GROCE. [In Memory Of by Martha Rebecca SWINDELL & R.S. SPENCER, JR. states Thomas Montgomery WILLIAMS was born October 26, 1857 and died May 8, 1935. He was the son of Albin B. WILLIAMS and Mrs. Elizabeth Rose NIXON. He was married to Priscilla JARVIS.] Mrs. Loften SMITH of the Wenona section succumbed to blood poisoning. She died at Taylor Hospital. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John BLAKE of Fairfield. Her body was bought to Fairfield for burial. She leaves a father, mother, five brothers, a husband, and eight children to mourn her going. Services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. Roe L. HARRIS, assisted by Rev. A.C. LEE. She was buried in Fairfield cemetery on May 5. Aunt Kizzie ARMSTRONG, as she was known by everyone, was born November 8, 1843 and died May 3, 1935. She was in her 92nd year. She had been confined to her bed for 90 days. She was a charter member of North Lake Church. Services were conducted by her pastor, E.R. STEWART, assisted by Rev. Roe L. HARRIS and Rev. W.P. ARMSTRONG. Her body was laid to rest at Bethlehem cemetery near Fairfield. She leaves a number of nieces and nephews. [In Memory Of by Martha Rebecca SWINDELL & R.S. SPENCER, JR. states Keziah Jane ARMSTRONG was the daughter of Sylvester Selby CUTRELL and Sarah WILLIAMS. She was first married to Edward S. JORDAN then secondly to Thomas Nelson ARMSTRONG.] On April 25 at 11 o’clock the death angel visited the home of Mr. William Charlie NEAL and took him away. He was 78 years and 7 months of age. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Florence Florida NEAL; three daughters: Mrs. J.S. HENDERSON of Scranton, Mrs. Nora BATEMAN of Rose Bay, and Bessie Mae NEAL who is still at home; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson; one sister, Mrs. Lee DIXON of Leechville. Mr. NEAL was formerly of Hyde County but lately had made his home at Leechville. His death is believed to have been caused by a stroke. The pallbearers were: Capt. Bill RICE, William THOMPSON, Ellis SADLER, Millard HARRIS, Roy BRICKHOUSE, and Elder J.S. HENDERSON. Elder HENDERSON also officiated. Mr. NEAL was buried at Leechville in the family cemetery. June, 1935 Vol. 12, #6 The May term of court was one that shall be remembered for years to come. It was the largest attended court perhaps ever witnessed in Hyde County. Several murders, shooting, and robbery cases were tried. The PAYNE vs. BLAKE case proved a mistrial and will come up and be tried at the October term. Chapter of Sorrow: Mr. Henry W. GIBBS of Engelhard died on May 17. He was 81 years of age. He was buried at Amity Church. He was a member of the Methodist Church. [In Memory Of by Martha Rebecca SWINDELL & R.S. SPENCER, JR. states Henry Wise GIBBS was born January 11, 1854 and died May 17, 1935. He was the son of Peleage Spencer GIBBS and Mahala Caroline GIBBS.] On May 25 Mr. Homer JARVIS of Swan Quarter passed away. He had lived the bachelor life. He had accumulated a considerable amount of wealth. Four brothers survive him: Capt. Foster JARVIS, John JARVIS, Walter JARVIS of Washington and Edmond JARVIS. Services were conducted by Rev. Roe L. HARRIS of Fairfield. [In Memory Of by Martha Rebecca SWINDELL & R.S. SPENCER, JR. states Wilson Homer JARVIS was born February 23, 1861 and died May 25, 1935. He was the son of Lodwick C. JARVIS and Gatsey HARRIS. He was buried in the L.C. HARRIS cemetery.] Card of Thanks: We wish to thank our friends for their kindness shown us during the sickness, death and burial of Mr. Henry W. GIBBS. [signed: Mr. and Mrs. Closs GIBBS.] Mr. Ellis WILLIAMS and Miss Emma Gray McKINNEY of Fairfield were united in holy matrimony at the Baptist parsonage on the afternoon of May 25. July, 1935 Vol. 12, #7 Chapter of Sorrow: Mr. T.L. BERRY succumbed to death early on the morning of July 1. After going about his early morning chores, he came back and sat down in a porch swing and when they called him for breakfast a few minutes later, the family found him dead. Bro. BERRY confessed Christ as his Savior in 1924 when he was 54 years old. He was one of the 27 original members of the Engelhard Baptist Church. The Engelhard church chose him to be a deacon along with Mr. Gray NEAL and Mr. Walter JARVIS. Burial services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. E.R. STEWART, assisted by Rev. Everett HARRIS and Rev. J.T. SANFORD. The service was held at home and interment made in a nearby family graveyard. He was born April 28, 1869 and died July 1, 1935, age 66 years, 2 months and 2 days. He leaves a wife; eight children: Jabin BERRY of California, Corton BERRY of New York, Freddie, Earl, Mrs. Eugene SADDLER, Mrs. Max HODGES, Mis Bettye JARVIS and Miss Grace JARVIS, all of Engelhard. Then Louise GIBBS who they took to raise who knew him as “papa”. He had five grandchildren. On June 16 four young boys went to Scranton Creek, at a point known as the baptismal grounds, to go swimming. Linden PALSON (should be POLSON) and another boy entered the water. Later Linden cried for help. His partner tried to help but had to fight loose to keep from being drowned. Linden was an adopted child. He was 13 years, 4 months and 1 day old. Burial services were held by Rev. C.E. LEE and interment took place at Mt. Olive Church. [In Memory Of by Martha Rebecca SWINDELL & R.S. SPENCER, JR. states Linden W. POLSON was born February 15, 1922 and died June 16, 1935. He was the biological son of Staton Alton HARRIS and Minerva “Minnie” RICHARDS who died June 6, 1922 and the adoptive son of John Asbury POLSON and Nancy B. RICHARDS, sister of Minerva.] Funeral services for Mrs. Susan Ellen SNELL, 68, were conducted at the Baptist Church on Saturday afternoon by Rev. E.R. STEWART, pastor of Fairfield Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. W.L. DAWSON, pastor of the Methodist Church, and Rev. John W. HARDY, pastor of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Burial was made in Oak Wood cemetery. Active pallbearers were Mrs. SNELL’S grandsons: Worth SNELL, Colon SNELL, Charlie SNELL, JR., Kent THURSTON, Britton SNELL, and Clarence RHODES. Honorary pallbearers were: J.E. REYNOLDS, D.J. SPRUILL, Walter HOLLOWAY, J.T. COMBS, B.R. HARRELL, and S.M. COMBS. Mrs. SNELL was born April 1, 1867 and died June 27, 1935. She was a life long member of the Sound Side Baptist Church. They celebrated their 50th anniversary on the 19th of April. They had a family of nine children, 25 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Surviving are her husband, J.B. SNELL; one brother: A.B. HOPKINS, SR. of Tyrrell County; two sisters: Mrs. F.E. YORK of Washington and Mrs. J.L. WHITEHEAD of Norfolk, Virginia; four sons: C.W. SNELL, H.E. SNELL, J. Leslie SNELL and Linwood SNELL ; five daughters: Mrs. J.L. THURSTON of Bolton, Mrs. E.F. WALKER, Mrs. Steve RHODES, Mrs. W.M. LAUGHINGHOUSE, and Mrs. Lena JOHNSON, all of Columbia, N.C. Jessie Wilson WILLIAMS, age 18, passed away at King’s Daughters Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia, Saturday, May 18, 1935, after a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John W. WILLIAMS, formerly of Hyde County, and niece of the late Morgan G. WILLIAMS of Portsmouth. She graduated from Belhaven High School in the class of 1933 and then attended the Norfolk Business College and was employed by a Portsmouth law office. Surviving are four sisters: Mrs. R.S. COX of Engelhard, Mrs. H.B. SCOTT and Miss Lillian WILLIAMS of Rocky Mount, and Miss Dora WILLIAMS of Belhaven; four brothers: Willis, John S., and Sidney, all of Belhaven, and Beamon WILLIAMS of Rocky Mount. Services were conducted by Rev. Mr. McGUM in Portsmouth on Sunday morning and the body was taken to Rocky Mount where graveside services were conducted by Rev. Dr. KINCHELOE on Sunday afternoon. She was interred in the family burial plot of her sister, Mrs. SCOTT, in Pineview cemetery. Mrs. Juliana CAHOON, the daughter of the late Capt. R.B. BURRUS and his wife Ellen, was born at Middletown on October 29, 1901. On February 25, 1920 she married C.G. (Carlton Gray) CAHOON. After several months sickness she died in Duke Hospital in Durham, N.C. on July 4, 1935. Services were held by Rev. J.T. STANFORD of Lake Landing and Rev. W.G. LOWE of Swan Quarter on July 7. She was buried in Soule cemetery. She is survived by her husband; two children: Linwood Gray CAHOON and Lois CAHOON; three brothers: Capt. R. B. BURRUS of Swan Quarter, W.P. BURRUS of Fairfield and G.T. BURRUS of Avalon, New Jersey; three sisters: Mrs. Osman COX of Middletown, Mrs. Henry Lee ROPER of Engelhard and Mrs. R.E. TUCKER of Newport News, Virginia. Mr. Sam ROLLINS passed away May 25 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E.C. MILLER. He lived a bachelor life for several years. He was 80 years old. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Alice THOMPSON of Washington, and one daughter, Mrs. E.C. MILLER of Middletown. He was buried at Amity. The service was conducted by Rev. J.C. GRACE (GROCE in other places) of Engelhard. [In Memory Of by Martha Rebecca SWINDELL & R.S. SPENCER, JR. states Samuel Mann ROLLINS was born April 18, 1855 and died May 25, 1935. He was the son of William Applegate ROLLINS, SR. and Frances Ann B. PUGH. He was married to Margaret Ann COX.] Mrs. Ella MANN died while at Washington on a visit to her son, Charlie MANN of Washington, N.C. Interment was made on July 5 at St. George’s cemetery. She and her daughter, Mrs. Mable MANN, had been living together. [In Memory Of by Martha Rebecca SWINDELL & R.S. SPENCER, JR. states Ella MANN was born November 1, 1853 and died July 3, 1935. She was the daughter of George DILL and Elizabeth ROBINSON. She was married to Charles Edward MANN. She was buried in Amity cemetery.] Mr. Fletcher BURRUS passed away on May 27 at his home after a couple of years of confinement from T.B. Mr. BURRUS was a successful merchant at Middletown until his health made him give it up. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Kate Farrow BURRUS; one son, Reginald BURRUS; one daughter, Mrs. Huron GIBBS; and his mother, Mrs. Sophia BURRUS, all of Middletown; three sisters: Mrs. Charles FULCHER of Manteo, Mrs. Lonnie TWIFORD and Mrs. Lillie HOOKER of Middletown. He had one grandson. He was buried at the home place of his parents. [In Memory Of by Martha Rebecca SWINDELL & R.S. SPENCER, JR. states John Fletcher BURRUS was born December 30, 1884 and died May 27, 1935. He was the son of Andrew Peele BURRUS, SR. and Sophia McKINNEY, and the husband of Kate Lee FARROW.] Rev. E.R. STEWART spent 12 days on Roanoke Island helping Rev. H.B. HINES, better known in Hyde County as ‘Red-Headed HINES”, in two meetings--one at Manteo and one at Roanoke Island church. A case of infantile paralysis caused our audiences to be cut because a restriction was placed upon all children under 15 year of age to stay away from public gatherings. The work continues to go on for the new bridge at Fairfield. It will span the Inland Waterway four miles from Fairfield and will link up two county seats. It will cost approximately $80,000 and is to be completed by September 15. Work began on March 11. We are glad to see the roads improved. The Famous Fork road into Middletown is being improved. Also the road from Fairfield to Engelhard is under construction. Mrs. J.E. SWINDELL of Lake Landing, who was in a wreck along with her husband, is now convalescing. Mrs. S.R. WILLIAMS, chairman of the committee on Citizens Military Training Camp enrollment in Hyde County, has selected the following young men who have already qualified in every way and have been accepted by the camp: John Ed SPENCER of Engelhard and Woodburn C. WILLIAMS of Swan Quarter. It was our pleasure to witness the birth of a new county paper on July 5, 1935, called the “Dare County Times” located on Roanoke Island. The first issue was attractively made up and printed on pink paper, the hue of which is probably out of place with sand dunes. It had an excellent news content and advertising and gives promise of being a worthwhile and profitable addition to Eastern Carolina. Lee” caught fire and burned on a trip out of Norfolk to Fairfield. Captain BURRUS has lost several boats by fire. Services were conducted by Rev. J.T. SANDFORD. [In Memory Of by Martha Rebecca SWINDELL & R.S. SPENCER, JR. states Hugh Blair CREDLE was born January 13, 1867 and died September 14, 1935. He was the son of George Lafayette CREDLE and Sophia S. BURRUS. He was married to Anna Mann FISHER.] Mrs. Annie L. SPENCER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John L. BRIDGMAN, was born December 7, 1875, was married to W.S. SPENCER on March 1, 1896, and died suddenly of a heart attack on September 5, 1935. Mr. W.S. SPENCER died July 16, 1933. After working all day and feeling as well as usual, she sat down in a chair where she operated a store at Rose Bay, and knew no more. Services were conducted by Rev. E.R. STEWART, assisted by Elders Junius B. LEE and P.E. GETSINGER. She leaves six children: Charlie E. SPENCER and John R. SPENCER of Rocky Mount, Mrs. Lillian SHEPHERD, Macon SPENCER, Walter SPENCER, and Billie SPENCER, all of Rose Bay. There are also four grandchildren and one brother, Mr. T.E. BRIDGMAN of Rose Bay. Dr. W.B. EDWARDS, president of Chowan College for approximately 10 years, died September 6. He taught in our high schools and college from 1912 to 1926. In May 1926 he was unanimously elected president of Chowan College in Murfreesboro. Dr. EDWARDS is survived by his wife, Cinderella Stanley EDWARDS; one brother, Frank EDWARDS of Eaton, Colorado; and two sisters: Miss E. Mae EDWARDS of Dalton, Georgia and Mrs. Will WILEY of Eaton, Colorado. On Friday, September 20, a large crowd gathered at the Inland Waterway, three miles from Fairfield, where Highway #9 crosses the Inland Waterway, to celebrate the opening of the new draw bridge. This new bridge has a 200’swing span and a 20’ road. It had 108’ of approaches, thus making this bridge 308’ long. It cost approximately $90,000. Born to Mr. and Mrs. T.D. BLAKE of Fairfield, a boy named Thomas Benjamin. He was born on August 31. October, 1935 Vol. 12, #10 There were many cases tried in October court. The PAYNE-BLAKE case claimed most of the time. The previous trial ended in mistrial, the verdict this time was guilty. They were found guilty of shooting and robbing Deputy Sheriff, Bill PAYNE, on November 24, 1934. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Macon WILLIAMS of Fairfield, Edward Windell WILLIAMS, on October 4, 1935. Resolution of Respect: In memory of our deceased brother, Charles C. COMBS, who was born April 28, 1878 at Gum Neck in Tyrrell County, and made a member of Fairfield Lodge #520 A.F. & A.M., May 9, 1907 and held this membership for 28 years. He departed this life August 28, 1935 at the age of 57 years and 4 months. Brother COMBS died in the Norfolk Marine Hospital. The brothers of Fairfield Lodge #520 paid the last rites by burying Bro. COMBS in the Baptist cemetery at Gum Neck on August 31. Bro. H.C. COMBS was Master of Ceremonies. Bro. COMBS was a master and pilot of steam vessels on the inland waterways of the U.S., which vocation he followed for around 10 years, after which he was appointed Postmaster at Gum Neck. He was a member of the Gum Neck Baptist Church. Bro. COMBS leaves four orphaned children, a sick wife, aged father, three brothers and four sisters. Deaths: It is with a sad heart that I try to write a sketch in memory of my dear mother, Mrs. Annie L. SPENCER, who was born December 7, 1875 and died September 5, 1935, making her stay on this earth 59 years, 8 months and 28 days. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John L. BRIDGMAN of Rose Bay and was married to the late W.S. SPENCER on April 1, 1896. To this union were born six children: C.E. SPENCER and J.R. SPENCER of Rocky Mount, W.H. SPENCER of Scranton, and W.M. SPENCER, M.T. SPENCER and Mrs. Lillian SHEPPARD of Rose Bay; also four grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted by Revs. E.R. STEWART, Junius B. LEE, and P.E. GETTINGER. She was laid to rest in the family burying ground under a beautiful mound of flowers. Pallbearers were: Mr. H.W. ANDREWS, Mr. B.A. MOORING, Mr. G.C. HOLBOMON, Mr. E.L. TATUM of Rocky Mount and Mr. M.E. CARAWAN and Mr. Raleigh D. JORDAN of Swan Quarter. In her younger life she joined the Missionary Baptist Church but in later years she became dissatisfied and joined the Primitive Baptist Church and there remained faithful until the Lord called her home. [Written by her broken-hearted daughter, Mrs. Lillian SHEPPARD.] Leslie Earl RADCLIFF, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thollie RADCLIFF, was born November 20, 1929 and died September 26, 1935. After an illness of three weeks he died of malaria and Bright’s disease. He was buried at Bethlehem Baptist cemetery near Fairfield. Rev. Roe L. HARRIS conducted the service. They were married November 2, 1935. Miss Hazel PAYNE and Mr. Carl Ray DAVIS were quietly married at the home of W.W. WATSON, Sunday afternoon, October 27. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.O. PAYNE of Swan Quarter and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.R. DAVIS of Pink Hill, N.C. They will make their home at Pink Hill. Engelhard is a growing town. Since January 1, 1935, the federal government and state highway commission have built a hard-surfaced road into Engelhard. Early in the summer an ice plant and lighting plant was completed. The graded school annex, which seats around 700 people, was completed in time to hold the 1935 commencement exercises. A large talking moving picture was started in August. Mr. J.M. LONG operates a new iron works plant. Mr. Darrell McKINNEY operates an electrical shoe shop. Miss Annie Weston PAYNE opened and is operating Make-Up-Box Beauty Shoppe. Mr. R.S. SPENCER has just completed an annex 30’x 70’ for his store in which he will carry a full line of furniture. Mr. SPENCER is a progressive merchant and we look forward to seeing this new annex filled with up-to-date furniture. Mr. Carroll MANN has completed a new house. Mr. S.S. NEAL has just completed 3 houses. Mr. R.L. GIBBS has about completed one of the nicest houses in Engelhard, a brick veneer house. Mr. P.D. MIDYETTE, who operates the ice and light plant, is now constructing an attractive house. Mr. Closs GIBBS is adding to his already large store, a large annex in which he hopes to display farm machinery and furniture. A telephone system has come to town linking it up with the outside world. Mr. Joe HARRIS has recently opened up a garage in New Headquarters in the old GUTHRIE house. Mr. Frank SWINDELL of Middletown is to move his garage to Engelhard in what was formerly HARRIS & WILLIAMS garage. Mr. W.H. COX plans to build a new garage near his present location. A creamery is being talked in connection with a cold storage plant. Also a canning factory. Mr. C.G. SPENCER has opened a cafe giving service to fishermen night and day. Engelhard has a Rotary Club and several secret organizations. Watch Engelhard grow! Chapter of Sorrow: After a long illness and confinement, Mr. Dick GIBBS succumbed to death at Tayloe Hospital. He was born September 26, 1861 and died October 31, 1935. He was 74 years, 1 month and 5 days old. He is survived by his wife; five children: Charlie GIBBS of Engelhard, Roy GIBBS of Hickory, Virginia, Mrs. Eure SPENCER and Mrs. Pat WATSON of Fairfield, and Mrs. George SEWELL of Swan Quarter. Also 23 grandchildren. Services were conducted at home and interment was in Fairfield cemetery. [In Memory Of by Martha Rebecca SWINDELL & R.S. SPENCER, JR. states Christopher Columbus “Dick” GIBBS, JR. was the son of Christopher Columbus GIBBS, SR. and Elizabeth BONNER. He was married to Elizabeth McKINNEY.] Mrs. Martha GIBBS, better known as “Aunt Martha”, was born December 19, 1852 and died October 22, 1935 at the ripe age of 82 years, 10 months and 3 days. For several years she had been in ill health and for months an invalid. She was a charter member of North Lake Baptist Church. Her husband preceded her in death by about 15 years. She leaves to mourn her departure, 35 nieces and nephews. Services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. E.R. STEWART. Mr. W.B. NIXON, a life long resident of Fairfield, died October 19, 1935 at the ripe age of 85, after six months illness and confinement. He was married three times. He is survived by his 3rd wife, formerly Eliza Jane WARD, and the following children: Mrs. Annie CUTRELL and W.B. NIXON of Fairfield, Mrs. Florence WALLARD and Julian C. NIXON of Norfolk, Virginia, Mrs. J.B. RADCLIFF of Leechville; two brothers: Lafate WILLIAMS of Creswell and Noah WILLIAMS of Wenona, N.C.; one sister, Mrs. Henry BERRY of Ransomville. There were 16 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Burial services were held at the home on Sunday, October 20 at 2:00 conducted by Rev. Roe HARRIS, assisted by Revs. E.R. STEWART and A.C. LEE. The pallbearers were: Sanderlin CAROWAN, Harold JARVIS, Allen SWINDELL, Alva NEAL, Leland CAROWAN, and Guy R. CUTRELL. Interment was in Fairfield cemetery. He was the son of Zachariah NIXON and Elizabeth ROSE. He was married 1st to Sarah WILLIAMS, 2nd to Parlia WILLIAMS, and 3rd to Eliza Jane WARD.] Saturday morning Mr. Jones SANDERSON of Engelhard had a stroke and was carried home. He died about 12 o’clock. He was 66 years old and a member of the Disciple Church. He leaves one sister, Mrs. Sam LITCHFIELD; his widow; two sons: Romulous and Gaston SANDERSON, all of Engelhard. Services and burial took place at Fulford cemetery with Rev. Everett HARRIS officiating. [In Memory Of by Martha Rebecca SWINDELL & R.S. SPENCER, JR. states Jones L. SAUNDERSON was born November 7, 1876 and died November 9, 1935. He was the son of Erasmus Hill SAUNDERSON and Mary TODD. He was married to Laura Rado MASON.] (According to the tombstone inscription, Jones SAUNDERSON would only have been 59 years of age at death, not 66 as the article states.) On October 9, old Mother Stork visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin CAHOON and left them a boy and a girl. They call them Audry and Aubney. December, 1935 Vol. 12, #12 Deaths: Mrs. W.R. SWINDELL resided at Rose Bay. She had a stroke of paralysis over a year ago and has been shut in ever since. She died November 16 and was buried at Mt. Olive cemetery. She leaves a sister, Mrs. William HARRIS of Fairfield; a husband and two sons. She was a member of the Disciple Church. [In Memory Of by Martha Rebecca SWINDELL & R.S. SPENCER, JR. states Rebecca Frances SWINDELL was born May 8, 1862 and died November 16, 1935. She was the daughter of William LINTON and Elizabeth SAWYER. She was married 1st to Israel B. PORTER and 2nd to Willis Redden SWINDELL.] Funeral services for Guy M. GUTHRIE, age 59, were held Thursday at 1 o’clock from the Swan Quarter Methodist Church. The Rev. W.G. LOWE, pastor, officiated.. The Odd Fellows had charge of the service at the grave in Soule cemetery. Mr. GUTHRIE died at Taylor Hospital, Wednesday at 8 a.m., following an illness of one week. Death was caused from Bright’s disease and complications. He was born at Engelhard and spent the greater part of his life in Hyde County. For 27 years he was identified with the educational work of his county, teaching in the schools for many years and later serving as county superintendent. He was a member of the Methodist Church and Odd Fellows. He was also president of the Beaufort-Hyde Burial Association. He was educated at old Trinity College. He is survived by his wife and two children, Miss Mildred GUTHRIE, teacher at Laural Hill, and Horace GUTHRIE, student at Maxton College. Also several brothers and sisters.
