Hyde County, NC - Ocracock Boating Accident, 1787 Newbern, in North Carolina, May 31 On Tuesday morning last, we understand the following melancholy accident happened at Ocracock: Messrs. Joseph Pedrick, James Williams and Francis Williams, pilots, in company with three others, observing two vessels at sea the evening before, set off at day-break in the morning to pilot them in. When they were about six miles from the bar, their boat was stove to pieces by a fish, supposed to be a Heronhog, by which means the above named persons were drowned. The others were taken up by Capt. Morrison in a sloop from St. Eustatia, who fortunately happened to be coming in at that time - one of whom, Mr. Benjamin Gaskins, continues very low, he being nearly exhausted when taken up.
