OCRACOKE - Friends here were shocked and grieved to learn of the death on May 19th of Dr. Charles H. ARMENTROUT, age 48, of Asheville. He was stationed at Ocracoke at the Navy Base during part of World War II and made many friends here. He and Mrs. Armentrout have returned to Ocracoke at least once a year since 1945, fishing with Capt. John Midgett or Capt Thurston Gaskill. Word of his sudden death from a heart attack was sent to friends here by Mrs. Armentrout. He used to tell the story of when he got orders to report to the Navy base at Ocracoke, he had never heard of Ocracoke and the Asheville Chamber of Commerce couldn't give him any information about it. But since he was going to a Navy Base, he decided to head east to the coast. Down in the Piedmont section in Winston-Salem, he learned that Ocracoke was an island off the coast noted for its sportsfishing. In Raleigh he was more closely directed as to the route and told to drive down to Beaufort, and from there he found his way to Atlantic, and thence by mail boat to Ocracoke. He liked his work here and was soon doctoring Islanders as well as Navy personnel when emergencies demanded, and during all the years since, he had never come to Ocracoke without his medical supplies, ready for the unexpected calls made on visiting doctors from time to time.
