Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late William Hertford and Julia Boyd Dunbar. She was the widow of Emmitt I. Bing who died in 1976. Mrs. Bing was a former employee of Virginia Public Service during the years she lived in Virginia and also taught school for several years. She was a member of the Swan Quarter Christian Church. Surviving are a sister, Lucille D. Griffin of Elizabeth City, and several nieces and nephews. Her brothers, Keith Dunbar and Kenneth Dunbar, and sisters, Lillian Hollowell and Allene Credle, preceded her in death. The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert K. Dunbar, Route #1, Scranton. BISHOP, SR., 73, died June 8, 1990, in his home. Mr. Bishop, a native of Engelhard, N.C., was the retired owner of Bishop & Co. Inc. painting contractors. He was past master of Doric Lodge 44 and past district deputy grand master of the 36th district. He was past noble grand of Washington Lodge 2 of Independent Order of Odd Fellows and past district deputy grand master of District 1 of Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was the widower of Camille M. Bishop, and an Episcopalian. Survivors include a son, F. Rollins Bishop, Jr., and a brother, Calvin T. Bishop, both of Norfolk; and 2 grandchildren. The graveside service with masonic rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Riverside Memorial Park by the Rev. John J. Teter. A Hyde County native, she was the daughter of the late Stephen Tyler and Mordecie Smith. She worked for several years at the Fairfield Library, was a member of Fairfield Chapter #247 Order of Eastern Star, and was a member of the Fairfield Christian Church. She was the widow of John Leland Blake who died October 31, 1961. A son, Maxwell Lawson Blake, preceded his mother in death, as did two brothers, Lofton Smith and Langston Smith. Surviving are two sons: Howard Emerson Blake of Media, Pa. and Curtis Dale Blake of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a brother, Carroll D. Smith of Fairfield; 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the gravesite in Fairfield Cemetery. William Booth will lead the service. He was born in Hyde County, the son of the late James Mathias and Elvira Jones Blake. He was married to the former Mamie Jefferson. He was employed as the farm mechanic on the Zeno Radcliff Farms for many years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Second Baptist Church in Washington. Surviving with his wife are two step-sons: David U. Barton of Chesapeake, Va. and Stephen E. Barton of Washington; three sisters: Louise Spencer and Nancy Lee Vaughn, both of Belhaven and Eunice Swindell of Engelhard; 6 step-grandchildren and 2 step-great-grandchildren. Mr. Blake was born July 16, 1910, in Hyde County, N.C. He was the son of the late George Allen and Nannie Blake and the husband of the late Ethel M. Blake. Mr. Blake was retired from the Recreational Department of the State of Virginia. He was a member of the Blackwater Baptist Church. He is survived by two daughters: Edna Parrish of Virginia Beach and Doris McCluskey of Benton Harbor, Mich.; 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren. "Dave" BLAKE, SR., 77, of Edgewater Drive, died Thursday, February 10, at his residence. He was a native of Hyde County, the son of the late Charles and Betty Neal Blake and was the husband of Eloise Taylor Blake of the residence. He retired as a government employee after 36 years of service, and also retired as a self-employed plumber in the Portsmouth area. He was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church and Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge #178 for approximately 50 years, Currituck Masonic Lodge #463, Scottish Rite, Elizabeth City Shrine Club and Chesapeake Hunt Club. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. Besides his wife, Mr. Blake is survived by a daughter, Joyce Strickland and her husband Michael of Chesapeake; a son William D. "Bill" Blake, Jr. and his wife Lou of Moyock; a sister, Addie Creekmore; and a brother, Travis Blake, both of Chesapeake; 7 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers: Carroll, Morgan, Hubert, Ben, and Melvin. A funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday in Mount Zion United Methodist Church by the Rev. Born in Hyde County on August 4, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Ottis and Martha Cahoon Carawan. She was a retired supervisor of the bookkeeping division of the country's largest contract trucking company, Midwest Transfer, for some 35 years in Chicago, Illinois. She was a member of the Swan Quarter Christian Church and Cape Henry Women's Club where she was very active. She and her husband returned to Virginia Beach in 1980 following her retirement. Surviving are her husband, Eugene Raymond Bong; two daughters: Barbara Leigh Bong of the home and Ginny Jeanne Noerenberg of Virginia Beach; two brothers: Ottis Carawan, Jr. and Sherlin Carawan, both of Swan Quarter; and a grandson. Mr. Boniface came to Hyde County in 1959 following his retirement with the town of West New York, New Jersey where he lived for 55 years. He spent 30 years as a career fireman and was inspector of combustibles at retirement. He worked here with Carroll Phelps Tax Evaluation Service as an appraiser. At his death, he was the last living founding member of the Fire Fighters Union in New Jersey. He was an avid bowler. Survivors are his wife, Doris Chapman Boniface; two sons: James Howard Boniface of Tampa, Fla. and Donald C. Boniface of Sun City, Arizona; two step-sons: Peter Ritter of California and Stanley Ritter of Texas; 5 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She was the widow of Ray Bonner. She was long active in her community and church work while her health permitted. BONNER, 72, farmer of Swan Quarter, died in Washington Friday from a hemorrhage. He was chairman of the Hyde County Board of Welfare and a former member of the County Board of Commissioners, retired farmer and life resident of Hyde County. He was a member of Soule Methodist Church, Swan Quarter Odd Fellows and Rebekah Lodges. He was the son of the late W.S. and Lorena Jones Bonner. He was twice married. His first wife was Mrs. Lizzie Swindell Bonner who died some 20 years ago. He is survived by his wife, who before marriage was Mary McClaud; two daughters: Lona Bonner of Swan Quarter and Mrs. T.F. Carmine of Hampton, Virginia; one brother, Grover Bonner of Rocky Mount; and one sister, Mrs. J.A. Less of Swan Quarter. Funeral services were held Saturday at Soule Methodist Church with Rev. A.H. Mrs. Boswell was a graduate of East Carolina University with her focus being on home economics, secondary science and administration. She taught for 18 years and served as a principal for 13 years both in the Edenton-Chowan school system. She was presently serving as field representative for U.S. Congresswoman, Eva M. Clayton, NC 1st District. Mrs. Boswell was well known in Chowan County and across the state for her active rolls in education, politics, and civic activities. She was active in the Chowan Ruritan Club and served in many capacities with her local members. She served most recently in her district as district governor. A member of Ballards Bridge Baptist Church, she was a Sunday School teacher and served in many other areas in the church. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter #302 where she had been past Matron and past district Deputy Grand Matron. She was an active member and past president of the Edenton Chapter of Business and Professional Women's Club. She is survived by three daughters: Beth Compton and husband Chris of Greensboro, Debra Boswell of Merry Hill, and Nancy Mathias and husband Richard of Sarasota, Florida; a son, Elton Boswell of the Outer Banks; one sister, Margaret M. Rowsom Funeral Home, Columbia, in charge. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ BRYANT, Mildred May OCRACOKE - Mildred May BRYANT, 87, of Ocracoke, died Sunday, Feb. 26 in an Elizabeth City hospital. Born in Ocracoke, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Jane Blount Bryant. She was a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Baltimore, Md. She is survived by three sisters: Muzell Byrant and Annie Barber, both of Ocracoke, and Mamie Bryant of New York City; one brother, Joffrey Bryant of Salem, N.J.; and two nieces: Mary Bryant of New York City and Nellie Lewis of Jersey City. Funeral services will be held at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Thursday, March 2, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Tim Lynch. Burial will follow in the Community Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church on Tuesday, Feb. 28. Arrangements were made by longtime friend Kenny Ballance of Ocracoke. Twiford's Island Chapel, Hatteras, is in charge arrangements. (The Coastland Times - Tuesday, February 28, 1995) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ BRYANT, Stella Halsey COLUMBA, N.C. - Stella Halsey BRYANT, 88, of the 1200 block of Gladiola Crescent, died June 26, 1998, at Bay Pointe Medical and Rehabilitation Center. Stella Halsey Bryant was a native of Columbia, N.C., and attended the public schools of Tyrrell County. After graduating from elementary school, she enrolled in the Elizabeth City State Normal High School where she graduated with honors. In later years she received her bachelor of science degree in education from Elizabeth City State College, now Elizabeth City State University. Mrs. Bryant studied further at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa. She taught 47 years in the public schools, 35 years in Tyrrell County, six years in Hyde County and six years in Creswell, N.C. She was an active member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church in Columbia, N.C., where she was the adviser of the church family. She was also a member of Queen Vashti Chapter, Order of Eastern Star No. 573. Stella was married to the late Melton Wesby Bryant. She leaves to cherish her memory a very devoted daughter, Bertha Bryant Corprew and her husband, Charles A. Corprew Jr.; a very devoted grandson, Charles A. Corprew III, whom she loved so dearly and was so affectionately called ``Granny'' by him; and a host of the dearest relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today in Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Columbia, N.C. Home going services will be at noon Thursday at the same church. Viewing will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday. The family will assemble in Stella's home in Columbia for the procession to the church. Mrs. Burnette was born in Engelhard, N.C., where she was a member of Mount Pilgrim Disciples Church. Survivors include two sisters: Etta Gibbs and Louise Coleman, both of New York City, and a brother, Dennis Gibbs of Elizabeth City. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Mount Pilgrim Disciples Church by the Rev. John Bryant. Burial will be in Brown Memorial Cemetery in Engelhard. "Lonnie" BURRUS, JR., 61, died Sunday, Feb. 4, at a Pitt County hospital. He was a native of Ocracoke, the son of Mrs. H.W. Willis of Ocracoke and the late Alonzo O. Burrus, Sr. of Hatteras. Mr. Burrus was retired from the U.S. Coast Guard in 1971 after 20 years of service. He was a member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Cora G. Burrus; one daughter, Karen L. Burrus; two sons: Lonnie R. Burrus and Johnny W. Burrus; seven grandchildren: Tina Johnson, Tabatha L. Garrish, Christopher G. Burrus, Bonnie M. Burrus, April L. Burrus, Joshua F. Burrus, and John Zachery Burrus; four aunts: Grace B. Bland, Marion B. Austin, Minnie A. Burrus, and Goldie S. Burrus; three uncles: Henry Bland, Bruce Austin, and Sam Maurice. He was preceded in death by two aunts: Lucy B. Maurice and Celia W. Tolson, and four uncles: William "Bill" Burrus, Adolphus Burrus, Enoch "Sid" Tolson, and L. Mack Williams. A funeral service will be Thursday, February 8, 1996 at 2 p.m. at Ocracoke United Methodist Church by Rev. J. Allen Lovell. Burial will follow in the O'Neal Family Cemetery in Ocracoke. Claud Webster BURRUS, JR., (Ret. U.S. Air Force), 64, died September 13 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro. Born in Hyde County, he was the son of the late Claud W. Sr. and Helene Gibbs Burrus, father of the late Nancy Burrus and brother of the late Walter Speight Burrus. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force with 22 years of service, was a former employee of Nash General Hospital and N.C. Salvage. He was a volunteer with the American Red Cross. Mr. Burrus is survived by his wife, Estelle "Pee Wee" Burrus; five sons: Terry Burrus of Swan Quarter, Larry Burrus of Washington, Jerry Burrus and Ricky Burrus, both of Greenville, and Claud "Porky" Burrus, III of Washington; two daughters: Julia Woodard Gray of Madiera Beach, Florida and Debra Thompson of Swan Quarter; a special sister-in-law and her husband, Peggy and Bobby Alphin of Warsaw; and 16 grandchildren. Mrs. Burrus was a member of the Snow Hill Baptist Church in Fairfield. She is survived by four daughters: Lodia Allen Burrus of Fairfield, Dorothy B. McCabe of Swan Quarter, Retha B. Sykes of Norfolk, Va., and Gloria J. Burrus of Fairfield; four sons: Jimmie Thomas Burrus and Leandus Burrus, both of Fairfield, and Danny Larry Burrus and Kenneth Earl Burrus, both of Engelhard; one brother, Albert Whitaker of Fairfield; three sisters [only 2 named]: Mrs. Farris Simpson of Roper and Mrs. Willner Spencer of Swan Quarter; 26 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Due to renovations at Snow Hill Baptist Church, services were to be held at Star Zion Disciple Church in Fairfield on Saturday, August 16, at 2 p.m. with burial to follow in Fairfield Cemetery. A Hyde County native, she was the daughter of the late Corbin and Elizabeth Spencer Gibbs. She was the widow of Claud W. Burrus, Sr. who died in 1968. Mrs. Burrus was a member of Middletown Christian Church. Surviving are two sons: Claud W. Burrus, Jr. of Goldsboro and W. Speight Burrus of Pinehurst; a brother, Roy Gibbs of Greenville; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Burrus, a native of Hyde County, was the daughter of the late Robert Edward and Dora Saunderson Carter. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, William Pell Burrus who died in 1987. She was a member of the Engelhard United Methodist Church and resided at St. Luke's Home for Retired Women in Raleigh until recently. Surviving are three sons: Charles L. Burrus of Knoxville, Tennessee, William S. Burrus of Raleigh, and James C. Burrus of Cary; 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert S. Burrus, and a daughter, Margaret Burrus Gibbs. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Amity United Methodist Church near Engelhard with the Rev. Tom Suplee officiating. He resided at Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community. He was the son of William Pell Burrus and Laura Carter Burrus formerly of Engelhard. He was a graduate of Engelhard High School, served in the U.S. Navy, including service during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was married first to the former Martha Jane Harris. Burrus worked for 38 years for the American Tobacco Co. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Surviving are his wife, Annie B. Burrus; a son, Robert S. Burrus, Jr. of Raleigh; his mother, Laura C. Burrus of Raleigh; three brothers: William S. Burrus of Raleigh, James C. Burrus of Cary and Charles L. Burrus of Knoxville, Tenn. Brown-Wynne Funeral home, St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, handled the arrangements. The family requests that contributions be made to a favorite charity in lieu of lowers. Born in Engelhard, he was the son of the late Claud Webster and Helene Gibbs Burrus. He was a certified public accountant and practiced in Engelhard and Lee County until his retirement due to his health . Surviving are his three sons: Kevin Speight Burrus of Holly Springs, Charles Swindell Burrus of Sanford, and John Korbin Burrus of Moncure; a daughter, Sabrina Burrus Parker of Timberlake; a brother, Claud W. Burrus, Jr. of Dudley. Funeral Services will be held at the Burrus family cemetery in Engelhard at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Steven Bryan will officiate. The family will gather at the home of Mrs. Evelyn Swindell in Engelhard on Wednesday morning prior to the funeral. Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter.
