Mrs. Cuthrell died in the Beaufort County Hospital last Thursday. She had been a patient here since July. The Hyde County woman gave her body to North Carolina Memorial Hospital at Chapel Hill for medical research so that further study can be done on leukemia. It was taken directly to Chapel Hill. Mrs. Cuthrell had been suffering with leukemia since 1944 and became bed ridden about the middle of last year. After expending all of her resources fighting the disease, friends in Hyde, Beaufort and elsewhere contributed generously toward making hospitalization possible. She expressed deep appreciation for these kindnesses. Before entering the hospital here, Mrs. Cuthrell was employed in the Sheriff's office in Hyde County. Before that, she taught school at Fairfield and Swan Quarter. Mrs. Cuthrell was active in club work and in Red Cross and other community activities. The Gray Ladies of the Beaufort County Hospital, who were her constant companions during her illness, said "her radiant spirit and warm friendliness drew many to her while a patient at the hospital." In a letter, Mrs. Cuthrell wrote of the Gray Ladies, "They are doing a wonderful work out here at the hospital. I can not think of a thing they have failed to do that would have contributed towards making me more comfortable and happy. I love every one of them." Mrs. Cuthrell was loved in return by the Gray Ladies. As Mrs. Cuthrell entered the hospital for the long treatment, she said, "I have no fear of the future for I am sure that I am not alone in this battle against disease." The statement demonstrated both her faith and her courage. Mrs. Cuthrell was born Sept. 1897, daughter of the late William and Mary Ann Overton of Swan Quarter, and spent her entire lifetime in Hyde County. Her husband, the late Holden Cuthrell, passed away more than 25 years ago.
