She was a native of Engelhard and a daughter of the late Asal and Sarah Collins Barber. She was the wife of the late Richard Daniels. She was a member of the Haven Creek Baptist Church, Manteo, and of the Royal Degree United Order of Tents. Survivors include three sisters: Mrs. Julia Mackey and Mrs. Lucinda Everettes, both of Engelhard, and Mrs. Bertha Midgett of Norfolk, Va.; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Annie Daniels of Manteo; one granddaughter, Mrs. Mary Ester Daniels Johnson, and 2 grandsons, all of Manteo. Funeral services were held Saturday in the Haven Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Calvin Moore. Burial was in the family cemetery. Mr. Daniels, a native of Hyde County, was a member and deacon of Pleasant Grove Church of Christ. Survivors include three brothers, Thomas C. Daniels and W.W. Daniels, both of Virginia Beach, and W. Harold Daniels of Moyock; three sisters, Edith Dean of Norfolk, Annie Bancroft of Tampa, Fla., and Marie Coulter of Falls Church, Va. The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in Pleasant Grove Church of Christ by the Rev. Leon Williams. Burial will be in Fairfield Cemetery. The white man was Richard DANIELS from near Fairfield, Hyde County. (The Economist (Elizabeth City) - Friday, May 22, 1896) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ DANIELS, Walter VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. - Walter Daniels, 79, of the 5600 block of Tidewater Drive, died Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, in DePaul Medical Center. A retired longshoreman for the International Longshoreman's Association Local 1248, Mr. Daniels had 33 years of service. He was a native of Hyde County, N.C., and was the son of Abram and Sally Ann Barber Daniels. He was a member of Garden of Prayer Worship Center. Survivors include his devoted wife of almost 48 years, Jessie M. Daniels of the home; daughter, Brenda M. Sutton; and grandson, Christopher Joel Sutton. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in Garden of Prayer Worship Center, Virginia Beach Blvd. and Church St., by Bishop L.E. Willis. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Riddick Funeral Service. The body will be placed in the church at 11:30 a.m. Friday. Tolson, on Thursday. Rev. W.R. Hale officiated. The baby died on October 19th at Rex Hospital in Raleigh after long invalidism. Mr. & Mrs. Tolson returned to the mainland on Friday with their daughter and son-in-law. Mr. Davis, born in Hyde County, N.C., was the son of the late Nathaniel and Maude Boyd and the widower of Gertrude Davis. He was a retired pipefitter from Local 110 Pipefitters Union and a member of Jarvisburg Church of Christ. Mr. Davis was in attendance at the church until one week prior to his death. He was a deacon and elder in several churches and was one of the founders of Great Bridge Church of Christ. He is survived by a daughter, Joyce Spruill of Zephyrhills, Fla.; three sons, Winfred R. Davis and Horace B. Davis, both of Virginia Beach, and Carl A. Davis of Coinjock; one brother, Stafford E. Davis of Temple, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 10a.m. Saturday in Jarvisburg Church of Christ with the Rev. Dennis Crehan officiating. DAVIS, 94, of Poplar Hall Drive, died January 25. She was born in Swan Quarter and was the widow of Wilson Davis. She was retired from the Virginia Beach School System and had taught in Norfolk County, princess Anne County and Virginia Beach. She was a member of heritage United Methodist Church. Survivors include a brother, Barnhill Balance of Norfolk; 5 nieces and 8 nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cora Williams Ballance and George Ballance; two sisters: Almeta Ballance Powers and Thelma Ballance Bright; and two brothers: Morris Ballance and Fernie Ballance. A native of Hyde County, she was the daughter of the late James Frey and Nannie Gaskill Weston. Mrs. Davis made her home in Norfolk and Virginia Beach for over 60 years. She was the widow of Edward O. Davis and a member of Park Place United Methodist Church in Norfolk. She retired in 1973 from Lake Taylor City Hospital, Norfolk, and was a 1929 graduate of the old St. Vincent DePaul School of Nursing. She was a member of the DePaul Alumni Association and the Senior Citizens Club. Survivors include two sons: Edward O. Davis, Jr. and his wife Nita of Virginia Beach, and James W. Davis and his wife Nancy of Highland, Indiana; one sister, Louise W. Stotesbury of Gaston; a niece, Nancy Cook of Gaston; and 5 grandchildren. Mrs. Daw, who was the daughter of the late Isaiah and Louisa Jones Bishop of Bishop's Cross near Pungo, has been married to Mr. Daw since November. Her first husband was the late W.E. Noble of Scranton, where she made her home for many years. She is survived by her husband, Branch Daw of Pantego; two sons: W.E. Noble of Scranton and Walton Noble of the U.S. Navy, stationed in Norfolk; 7 grandchildren; three sisters: Mrs. Ellis Midgette of Manteo, Mrs. O.C. A native of Caroleen, he was the son of Wallace and Mary Alice Ervin Deese of Forest City. He received his education at Chase High School in Rutherford County and was player of the year in football. He served in the U.S. Air Force and spent his working life in law enforcement. He had served with the N.C. Highway Patrol and was stationed in Buncombe County. He was an enforcement officer with the N.C. Wildlife Commission and worked as an investigative officer with Beaufort County Sheriff's Dept. for several years during which he was commander of the Beaufort/Hyde Drug Task Force. He had served as chief deputy with Hyde County Sheriff's Dept. during recent months. He was a Mason and a member of Belhaven Lodge #509, AF & AM. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Barbara O'Neal Deese; two daughters: Brandi Nicole Deese and Victoria Deese of Raleigh; two step-sons: Paul E. O'Neal of Fairfield and Steven E. O'Neal of Greenville; a brother, Roger Deese of Durham; and 2 grandchildren. Masonic graveside funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Fairfield Cemetery. January 16 after a brief illness. Dr. Mehoney was Professor Emerita of Arts at Drew University in Madison, N.J. and had recently retired to her home on Ocracoke. She was enjoyed summers on the island with her many friends and neighbors since the early 40's. She is survived by her brother, Robert H. Dehoney of the Isle of Palms, S.C.; nieces: Joanne Dehoney of Athens, Ga., Susan Bradley of Silver Springs, Md., Catherine Dehoney Robinson of Alexandria, Va., and Eleanor Dehoney of Washington, D.C.; 7 grandnieces and nephews. Draper, Sr. Mrs. Draper is survived by one daughter, Dorothea I. O'Neal of Ocracoke; one son, Ralph B. Draper, Jr. of Mays Landing, N.J.; 4 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. The body was taken from Twiford's Island Chapel, Hatteras, to Nichols Funeral Home, 212 E. Born in Edward, N.C. March 27, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Thomas and Hope Latham Tuten. She was the widow of Samuel Alonzo Dudley who died November 17, 1969. Educated in Aurora High School, she later received her degree in Home Economics from the Former Woman's College in Greensboro and her Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling from the former East Carolina Teacher's College in Greenville. She taught in the Duplin County and Hyde County Schools, later served as Dietitian of the Hyde County Schools before her retirements. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Hyde County retired school personnel and was active in support of the Caswell Center at Kinston. She was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church at Lake Landing. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Amity United Methodist Church. Rev. L.R. Sparrow and Rev. Edith Dudley Jenkins will officiate. Burial will follow in Soule Cemetery. Surviving are a son, Samuel A. Dudley Jr. of Washington; daughter, Inez Tuten Dudley of Kinston; sister, Lael T. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the European Theatre during World War II. He had lived in the Piney Woods community of Hyde County for many years, was a retired farmer and a member of Rose Bay Baptist Church. He was the widower of Alma William Dunbar. Surviving are a brother, Edward Dunbar of Marietta, Ga.; four sisters: Alice Lewis and Mae Mooney of Fairfield, Mary Brickhouse of Aurora, and Doll Burney of Jacksonville, Fla.; several nieces and nephews. Mr. Dunbar was preceded in death by brothers: John and Curtis Dunbar, and a sister, Ruth Ohma Doame. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 8, in Rose Bay Baptist Church. The Rev.
