A domestic worker for 60 years, she was a native of Hyde County, N.C., and the widow of George Eaton. She was a member of Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church, Norfolk, and was a deaconess, as well as a member of the Ellen Wood-Emily B. Jordan Missionary Circle and Ballard-Epperson Sunday School Class. She was predeceased by her parents, Lavenia Mackey King and Turner King. Survivors include two nieces, Lavenia Turner of Norfolk and Keena Morris of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two great-nieces, Galindo Norman of Norfolk and Mary Huntly of Roosevelt, Long Island, N.Y. Also, Mrs. Eaton leaves a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church, Norfolk, by the Rev. C. Kirkland Harris. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Norfolk. The remains will be placed in the church at 9:30 a.m. the day of the service. The family will receive friends in the residence. He was a merchant and retired farmer, aged 65 years old. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Julia W. Eborn; one sister, Minnie; one son, and one daughter, Drew and Clee; and several grandchildren; also one brother, Jinks Eborn. He was buried Sunday, March 15, in Holly Grove Cemetery, Sidney Church. Mrs. Edinger was born in Hyde County, Lake Landing Township, to the late Johnnie Robert and Lillie Gibbs McKinney. She was a retired registered nurse and was a member of Bayview United Methodist Church. She is survived by two daughters: Kerry Edinger of Tappahannock, Va., and Nancy Edwards of Norfolk; two sisters: Irene Arnold of North Carolina, and Guelda Berry of Florida; 2 grandchildren and an adopted grandchild. A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, September 16, at 1 p.m. in Twiford's Colonial Chapel in Chesapeake, Va. A graveside service will be conducted on Friday at 11 a.m. in Fulford Cemtery in Engelhard. Mr. Edwards was married to the late Jeanette M. Edwards. He was employed by U.S. Air. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Bonnie Edwards; 13 brothers and sisters; seven children and their spouses, Michael Glenn and Melinda; Debra Marie and Thomas; Ward Franklin Jr. and Mary; Theresa Lynn, Sandra Gail, David, Lisa Diane, Arthur, Robert Timothy; and 13 grandchildren. Memorial services were held at Princess Anne Plaza Baptist Church, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13, with the Rev. Ronald W. Lee presiding. The family received friends after the services at their residence, 821 Oldham Road, Virginia Beach. Any donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Mrs. Eley was the daughter of the late Stacy and Lillian Thomas Simpson and the widow of Alexander M. Eley. She was a bookkeeper with the Southern Bank of Virginia for 12 years and the owner/operator of the Pony Island Motel and Restaurant in Ocracoke until she retired. Mrs. Eley was a member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church. She is survived by her son, William W. Eley of Virginia Beach, Va. Funeral services will be held Wednesday in the Ocracoke United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. Burial will be in the Ocracoke Community Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church on Tuesday evening and remain there until the funeral hour. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Ocracoke United Methodist Church Building Fund. Twiford Island Chapel, Hatteras, is in charge of arrangements. (The Coastland Times - July 21, 1992) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ELKINS, Jesse Lee ENGELHARD - Jesse Lee ELKINS, 68, of Engelhard, died April 21 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville. Born in Huntington, W.Va. in 1925, he was the son of the late Eddie and Rachell Wells Elkins. Mr. Elkins served in the United States Navy for twenty years and retired in 1971 as a boatswain's mate-3 after serving in World War II, Korean conflict and the Viet Nam era. After his retirement, he worked as a special police officer at the Chrysler Museum in Virginia and lately had worked with Gibbs Used Cars in Engelhard. Surviving are his wife, Terry Brinn H. Elkins; a daughter, Sybrena Joann E. Wellington of Wellston, Ohio; a step-son, Bill Rex Hardison of Alvin, Texas; two step-daughters: Millie H. Andrews of Engelhard and Maybell Stevens of Nags Head; two brothers: Bill and Jimmy Elkins both of Huntington, W. Va.; three sisters: Ruth E. Sawyer of Kentucky, Edna E. Graham and Evelyn E. Hamlin, both of Huntington; and 2 grandchildren. A sister, Mary E. Kirtley, preceded him in death. The family will receive friends at the home, U.S. Highway 264, Engelhard. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at the family plot at Fulford Cemetery in Engelhard. The Rev. Albert Stuck, pastor of Engelhard Christian Church, and Steve Bryan will officiate. Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter, where the body will lie in state until 1:30 p.m. Sunday, when it will be moved for the service. CONWAY, N.C. - Elmo Lee Emory, 72, of Route 1, a retired asphalt plant supervisor, died Aug. 24, 1992, in his home. Mr. Emory was born in Gullrock, N.C. He had retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He was a member of Ashley's Grove Baptist Church, Conway. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Allen Dixon Emory; a stepdaughter, Brenda Strickland of Raleigh; five stepsons, Joseph Dixon and Jerry Dixon, both of Murfreesboro, Thurston Dixon of Charlotte, and James Griffith and Henry Griffith, both of Franklin, Va.; and 12 step-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Ashley's Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. David Ross and the Rev. Wint Hale. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Soule Cemetery, Swan Quarter. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in Garrett Funeral Home. A native of Hyde County, she was the daughter of the late Lewis Wilson and Levene O'Neal Jarvis and was the widow of Will R. Equils. She was a member of the Scranton Christain Church. Surviving are three sons: Gilbert Equils of Richmond, Va., Eugene Equils of Belhaven and William Equils of Scranton; two daughters: Mrs. Gaston (Essie) Sadler of Scranton, and Mrs. Robert (Tiny) Cahoon of Fairfield; 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Scranton Christian Church. Floyd Manning and Mike Swindell will officiate. Burial will follow in the Mount Olive Church of Christ cemetery in Ponzer. Bryan Funeral Service in Swan Quarter is in charge of arrangements. Equils, 80, a retired marine engineer, died Sept. 1, 1994, in a local hospital. Mr. Equils was born in Hyde County, N.C. He was a marine engineer for the U.S. government during World War II and retired from Curtis Bay Towing Co. after 30 years. He was a member of White Hill Freewill Baptist Church, Aurora, N.C., and attended Hyde Park Freewill Baptist Church in Norfolk. He was a Mason. Survivors include his beloved wife of 60 years, Nellie Lee Equils; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Equils Hyatt and William G. Hyatt Jr. of Virginia Beach; a son and daughter-in-law, James W. Equils and Marcia S. Equils of Laguna Hills, Calif.; 5 grandchildren: William G. Hyatt III of Chesapeake, Tracy Susan Hyatt of Los Angeles, Shawn Equils Sinclair of Davis, Calif., Douglas J. Equils and Brandon C. Equils, both of Laguna Hills, Calif. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Born in Roanoke Rapids, he was the son of the late Reuben Edward and Betty Carawan Evans. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II, and was a member of the American Legion in Belhaven. Surviving are a son, William Martin Evans of Swan Quarter; two daughters: Faye E. Gent of Simpsonville, S.C. and Yvonne E. DeRuiz of Spokane, Washington; a sister, Lucille E. Carawan of Greenville; a half-brother, Dewey Sawyer of Swan Quarter; and 4 grandchildren. A funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the gravesite in Soule Cemetery. She was a native of Hyde County. She was a midwife and a member of Powells Point Christian Church. She was the wife of the late Emmett Evans and the daughter of the late Charlie Voliva and Lillie Cuthrell Voliva Melson. Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Williams of Point Harbor, N.C.; 5 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and 2 step-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Evans was predeceased by one son, Edward Foster, formerly of Norfolk. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Powells Point Christian Church with the Rev. Jerry Owens officiating. Mr. Everett, a retired short shoreman, worked for Lamberts Point Dock for 37 years. He was born in Engelhard, N.C., and was a member of the International Longshoreman Association #1458, 21st St., Norfolk. He was a Baptist. He was preceded in death two years ago by his wife, Inez Marie Everett, to whom he was married for 52 years. Survivors include two daughters, Thelma Robinson of Norfolk, Linda Boone of Chesapeake; one son, Samuel Everett, Jr. of Chesapeake; one sister, Bessie Riddick of Norfolk; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a niece, Pearl Randolph of Engelhard; and a host of other friends and relatives. The funeral will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Metropolitan Funeral Service Chapel, Norfolk, by the Rev. Johnnie Brown. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today in Metropolitan. Family and friends will assemble at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Everett Jr., 925 Latham St., Chesapeake, on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. for the funeral procession to the chapel. Born in Hyde County, N.C., Mrs. Ewell was a graduate of Kees Business College and a retired civil service secretary for Sinclant Fleet. She was a Protestant. The widow of Claude Richard Ewell, she is survived by her daughter, Candace Ewell Briley and her husband, Keith, of Smithfield; two sisters, Theolia Brackin of New Bern, N.C., and Bessie Rae Clayborne of Norfolk; a brother, Estes Lupton of Florida; and two grandsons, Daniel Richard Lebo and Christopher Allen Lebo, both of Smithfield. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Forest Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Norman Holcomb. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. today at Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel.
