CHESTER, VA - Elmer S. FARMER, 69, of Chester, died Jan. 7, in a Richmond, Va. hospital. Mr. Farmer, a native of Rocky Mount, was a retired hydraulics engineer, a WWII veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy, and was a Methodist. He was the son of the late Elmer S., Sr. and Georgia Farmer and the widower of Ella Forbes Farmer. Surviving are three sons: Ronnie Farmer, Edward Farmer and Kevin Farmer, all of Richmond, Va.; one brother, Malcolm Farmer of Huntington, W.Va., and four grand- children. Funeral services will be held at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Thursday, Jan. 10, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Clyde Denny. Burial will be in the family cemetery, Ocracoke. Twiford's Island Chapel is in charge of arrangements. (The Coastland Times - January 8, 1991) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FARROW, Carl Graydon ENGELHARD - Carl Graydon FARROW, (HMCA-Ret), 81, died February 13 in Pungo District Hospital, Belhaven. A native of Hyde County, he was the son of the late James Cordon and Laura Frances Burrus Farrow. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1969 after serving 23 years as a chief hospital medical corpsman and seven years in the fleet reserve. He was a member of Engelhard United Methodist Church and attended Weaver College. Surviving are several cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Amity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gladys Williford, pastor, and Raffael Farrow, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter. (The Coastland Times - Tuesday, February 16, 1993) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FARROW, Florida Belle Donnell SWAN QUARTER - Belle, the Junoesque cook who for many years has been a fixture at O'Neal's Hotel in Swan Quarter, died Monday. She had a sudden heart attack. She had been in chatge of the kitchen back in the days when it was the Howard Inn, and with the sale of the hotel to new owners, she went along with it. She weighed 340 pounds and she was liked by everyone who visited the hotel. Florida Belle Donnell FARROW was 58 years and 20 days old on Monday, and at 7 a.m. she was taken with a shortness of breath and died before Pratt Williamson could get across the street with the Berry Ambulance Co. to take her to a doctor. She was born a Donnell but married a Farrow who has long ago since passed out of her life, but she left a daughter, Ernestine Farrow and a son, Harvey, both of Swan Quarter, and another son, James Edward of Washington, D.C.; and 3 grandchildren. Two brothers also survive, Eddie Donnell of Swan Quarter and Bennie of Norfolk; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral was a big one which was held from the Bryants Chapel Church at 1:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. J.A. Mackey of Lake Landing. Burial was in the Donnell Cemetery. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Scranton Christian Church. Burial will follow in Soule Cemetery. Surviving in addition to her parents are a sister, Christy Farrow of the home; a brother, Eric Farrow, of the home; the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Raffael B. Farrow of Route 1, Engelhard; the maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Sallie Reamey of Pamlico Beach; the paternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Ercell Gibbs of Route 1, Engelhard and Mrs. Dora Wright of Norfolk, Va. Visitation was set for 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Bryan Funeral Service in Swan Quarter, and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Raffael B. Farrow, Route 1, Engelhard. (The Coastland Times - Sunday, October 10, 1993) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FERGUSON, Duncan Lowell HYDE COUNTY - Duncan Lowell FERGUSON, 46, a resident of Cross Creek Health Care Center, died early Tuesday morning, June 30, 1998, after a long illness. Mr. Ferguson was born September 17, 1951, in Yokosuka, Japan, son of Peter and Jean Ferguson. Along with his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Peter S. Ferguson of Fremont, Calif., Bruce P. Ferguson of Nags Head, Charles D. Ferguson of San Diego, Calif.; one niece; and two nephews. Memorial services will be held in Newton, Mass., at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), at 309 W. Millbrook Road, Suite 121, Raleigh, N.C. 27609. SWAN QUARTER - Mrs. M.G. FISHER, 81, of Swan Quarter, died February 9th, and was laid to rest in the Soule's Cemetery. She was as ardent member of the Soule's Methodist Church. She will be greatly missed by a host of relatives and friends. Surviving are her husband; two sons: U.B. Fisher of Swan Quarter and A.G. A native of Hyde County, she was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Fronie Ellen Kenny Midgett. She was the widow of Sherrille Edison Fisher. She was educated in Hyde County schools and was a graduate of the former Lake Landing School and attended Hardbarger Business School in Raleigh. She retired as a secretary at Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge after 25 years service. She was a member of the Amity Methodist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Anita Fletcher of Ocracoke; a sister, Bernice Temple Midgett of Kinston; a half-sister, Cebie Midgett Hubbard of Panama City, Florida; and 2 grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday in the Amity Methodist Church with the Rev. Glen Hancock, pastor, and the Rev. Wilbur Ormond, a former pastor, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. (The Coastland Times - February 11, 1990) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FLANNAGAN, William Henry OCRACOKE - William Henry FLANNAGAN, age 70, died at his home in Ocracoke on Friday night, March 6, and was buried in the Styron Cemetery on Saturday, March 7. Rev. Ernest Powlesland officiated. Mr. Flannagan came to Ocracoke to live last summer, purchasing a home here with the idea of retirement. He was born in Liverpool, England, coming to this country as a youth. He served for years in the Merchant Marines. (The Coastland Times - Friday, March 13, 1953; pg. 4) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FLOWERS, Carrie SWAN QUARTER - Funeral services for Mrs. Carrie FLOWERS were held from Calvary Presbyterian Church near Swan Quarter Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock with James McKinney, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Soule Cemetery. Mrs. Flowers died at 5 o'clock Monday morning at her home. She was 76 years old. Mrs. Flowers was a native of the Aurora section of Beaufort County. She was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her husband [not named]; three sons: Harvey and Lee of the home and Miller Flowers of Belhaven; four daughters: Mrs. Carl Crumpler of Pantego, Mrs. Lewis Johnson of Richmond, Va., Mrs. Leslie Moore of Belhaven and Mrs. Lee Sawyer of Scranton; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. John HYDE COUNTY - A double homicide occurred in Swan Quarter in Hyde County on Saturday. Capt. McKinney and a Negro had a disturbance and the Negro fired five shots from a revolver at the Capt. The Negro then attacked Capt. John FLOWERS who was on board. Flowers shot the Negro through the breast, the Negro then shot Flowers through the head. Both men were fatally wounded and soon died. Floyd, a native of St. Augustine, Fla., was the son of Charles and Rosa Floyd of Fairfield. Surviving in addition to his parents are three brothers: Maurice Floyd, Charles Floyd and Daron Floyd, all of Fairfield. Funeral services were held Saturday. She was a native of Engelhard and a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She is survived by one son, Cory Fonville of Engelhard; two sisters: Mabel Burrus, also of Engelhard and Mary Agrus of Farmville. Funeral services were scheduled at 1 p.m. Saturday in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Anthony to officiate and burial to follow in Brown Cemetery. A native of Swan Quarter, N.C., she was employed with National Linen Service. Survivors include one son, Carlton Fonville of Norfolk; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Alexander and Mrs. Hazel McKinney, both of Norfolk; two brothers, Seymour Fonville of Norfolk and Jack fonville of Pawtucket, N.C.; five grandchildren; and one daughter-in-law. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home by the Rev. Frank Guns. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Memorial Park, Chesapeake. The family will assemble at the residence at noon for the processional. Viewing will begin at 4 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. (Virginian-Pilot - Thursday, December 31, 1992; pg. 2D) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FORTESCUE, Zachariah Thomas GREAT CITIZEN OF HYDE COUNTY DIES IN TENNESSEE - Zachariah Thomas FORTESCUE died Tuesday, March 22nd at the age of 86, while on a visit to the home of a son in Alcoa, Tennessee. He was long a leading merchant and farmer of Sladesville, Hyde County and the head of a large family of prominent and successful children. He was stricken by a heart attack while on a visit of several weeks. His wife, Lucy Perry Fortescue, preceded him in death in November 1951. He was the son of the late John E. and Nancy Gibbs Fortescue. He was born in Currituck Township on September 30, 1868. He was a member of Epworth Methodist Church at Sladesville. He is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Harvey Credle of Sladesville and Mrs. Robert E. Lee Greene of Gainsville, Florida; five sons: Dr. W.N. Fortescue of Hendersonville, Hugh Fortescue of Washington, John Elliott Fortescue of Alcoa, Tennessee, Z.T. Fortescue, Jr. of Port Arthur, Texas, and Frank W. Fortescue of Scranton. He had 19 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Rev. A.H. Stone conducted the funeral Friday at 2 p.m. at Epworth Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. She was a native of Bridgeton, N.J., and she attended Faith Deliverance Christian Center, Norfolk. She is survived by a daughter, Rhashemah Harris of Chesapeake; mother, Rita Harris Stephens of Bridgeton; father, Clay Anthony Fonville of Vineland, N.J.; two sisters, Tyesha Taylor and Angel Stephens, both of Bridgeton; five brothers, Tyrone Taylor, Robert Brown, John Harris, Clayvon Fonville, and Vadull Fonville, all of Bridgeton; paternal grandparents, Mary Doucet and Lester Doucet of Chesapeake; maternal grandmother, Maggie Harris of Bridgeton; paternal grandfather, Clayton Fonvill of Millville, N.J.; paternal great-grandmother, Magnolia Spencer of Engelhard, N.C.; step-grandmother, Wilhemina Doucet of Chesapeake; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. Bernard Thomas in Corprew Funeral Home Chapel, Portsmouth. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Portsmouth. (Virginian-Pilot - Friday, October 13, 1995; pg. 4B) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FULCHER, Benjamin OCRACOKE - Benjamin FULCHER, 70, passed away at his home at Ocracoke on Monday, February 16th, following a second heart attack. He had been previously afflicted about two weeks ago while oystering out in Pamlico Sound. Mr. Fulcher was a lifelong resident of Ocracoke, born there January 24, 1883. During his younger days he worked some on sailing vessels, but for the most part, his whole life's work has been that of an Ocracoke fisherman. His loss will be keenly felt by the older group here. He was a devoted member of the Methodist Church, serving as lay-leader from time to time, and always active in church. He was a member of the Ocracoke Civic Club and interested in all phases of the island's welfare. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Annie Simpson Fulcher; his daughter, Mrs. Mabel Gaskill; and his sisters: Mrs. I.F. O'Neal and Mrs. Leonard Williams, all of Ocracoke. Funeral services were conducted at the home on Tuesday. Burial was in the family graveyard. FULCHER, 81, died March 17 in Carteret General Hospital at Morehead City. She was born in Ocracoke on August 16, 1912 and resided there all her life. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church in Ocracoke and was married to the late Elmo M. Fulcher for 46 years. Survivors include a daughter, Ellen F. Cloud; two sons: Murry Fulcher and Laurie M. Fulcher; a foster sister, Ellen Robinson; two brothers: George G. Jackson and Nathaniel Jackson, all of Ocracoke; 6 grand- children; and 4 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were set for 1 p.m. Saturday in Ocracoke United Methodist Church by the minister, with burial to be in the Community Cemetery. Mrs. Fulford was born in Swan Quarter, N.C. She was a member of Queen Street Baptist Church, Norfolk; Willing Worker Club; the Prayer Band; and attended Sunday School. Survivors include a daughter, Willie Mae Pritchard of Norfolk; and six grandchildren: Robert Farrow, Artis Farrow, Ted Pritchard, Nicole Pritchard and Charles Pritchard, all of Norfolk, and Andrea Pritchard of Colorado Springs, Colo. A funeral will be conducted at 1p.m. Monday at Queen Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Peter Wherry. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. A wake will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Monday. The family will be at 962 Reservoir Ave. (Norfolk) at noon Monday for the funeral processional to the church.
