Funeral services were held at the Ocracoke Methodist Church on Monday morning at 10:30 with Rev. W.R. Hale officiating. Interment was in the Community Cemetery. Except for the service in the Navy from 1899 to 1903, Mr. Garrish spent his entire life at Ocracoke. He was married August 19, 1903 to Annie Lee Scarborough, who survives him. Surviving children are: Mrs. Howard O'Neal of Ocracoke, and Mrs. Graydon Ring of High Point; 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Mr. & Mrs. Graydon Ring and children arrived on the island on Sunday for funeral services and are staying with her sister. Mr. Garrish, a native of Ocracoke, was the former owner and manager for 11 years of the Ocracoke Community Store. He was a member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church, the Hyde County Board of Education, and was an actor and musician. He was the son of the late Jesse Woolard and Lucille O'Neal Garrish and the husband of Margaret Overton Garrish of the home. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Melissa G. Fulcher and Mandy G. Jones, both of Ocracoke; two sons: Daniel Wayne Garrish and Alton Creig Garrish, both of Ocracoke; and 6 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Sunday, June 9, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Clyde Denny. A native of Ocracoke, she was the daughter of the late William Hinman and Merian Spencer Howard and the widow of William P. Garrish, Sr. She was a member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and former member of the church choir. Surviving are one daughter, Merian G. Hoggard of Ocracoke; one son, William P. Garrish, Jr. of Ocracoke; one sister, Caddie Overton of Ocracoke; 2 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Friday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Clyde Denny. Burial will follow in the family cemetery at Ocracoke. Mrs. Garrish was born in Hyde County, daughter of the late Charlie Warren Garrish and Rosa O'Neal Garrish. She was the wife of the late James N. Garrish. She was a homemaker and member of Ocracoke United Methodist Church. Mrs. Garrish is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Garrish of Manistee, Michigan; two sons: Norman Lee Garrish of Winterville and Kenneth Wayne Garrish of Ocracoke; one sister, Mildred O'Neal of Ocracoke; 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Mr. Garrish was born in Raleigh and was a retired captain for the N.C. DOT Ferry Division. He was a member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church, a member and past master of the Ocracoke Masonic Lodge #747, where he had achieved the title "33rd Degree Mason" and was a certified lecturer. Mr. Garrish was also a member of the Scottish Rite and Sudan Temple Shrine and was the first Hyde County commissioner of Ocracoke Island. He was one of the first captains for the Ocracoke-Cedar Island Ferry and N.C. Highway 12 was named for him. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Coast Guard and also served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was the son of the late Myron A. and Agnes Scott Garrish and the husband of Elsie Ballance Garrish of the home. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Agnes Garrish Garrish and her husband William, and Martha Garrish O'Neal and her husband Ronnie Van O'Neal, all of Ocracoke; one grandson, Ronnie Van O'Neal, Jr. and wife Julia; one great-grandson, Ronnie Van O'Neal, III, all of Ocracoke. He was preceded in death by his brother, Myron Garrish, Jr. A funeral service was held September 22 at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church with the Rev. Allen Lovell officiating. Surviving are one daughter, Sandra G. Jackson of Ocracoke; one son, Joseph B. Garrish of Hertford; sisters: Keever Grigas of Portsmouth, Va. and Sibyl Wilder of Ocracoke; 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. A Hyde County native, Garrish was the son of the late John Leon and Carrie McKinney Garrish. He worked for many years as a bridge tender with the U.S. Corps of Engineers in Hyde County. He retired 10 years ago. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. Surviving are his wife, Wanda Smith Garrish; two sons: Charles R. Garrish of Scranton, and Carl A. Garrish of Swan Quarter; a brother, Roy Garrish of Greenville; three sisters: Lemmie Dell G. Credle of Swan Quarter, Edna G. Heath and Elizabeth G. Carson, both of Greenville; and 5 grandchildren. A sister, Bernice Mayo, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the family plot in Beulah Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Route 2, Scranton, with the Rev. GARRISH, 77, of Ocracoke, died July 1, in an Elizabeth City hospital. Mr. Garrish, a native of Ocracoke, was retired from the U.S. Coast Guard after 20 years of service and worked for the N.C. Dept. of Transportation Ferry Division as a deck hand. He was the son of the late Benjamin and Annie Williams Garrish and the husband of Sydney Styron Garrish of the home. Besides his wife, Mr. Garrish is survived by one daughter, Betsy Styron Outlaw of Ocracoke. Funeral services will be held at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Wednesday, July 3, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Clyde Denny and the Rev. John McPhee. Born in Ocracoke, he was the son of the late Preston and Bertha O'Neal Garrish and the husband of Hazel W. Garrish. Mr. Garrish was a commercial fisherman and a World War II Navy veteran, having been awarded the Purple Heart. He retired from NC DOT Ferry Division in 1994, and in 1976 from the US Army Corps of Engineers. Mr. Garrish was a member of the Masonic Lodge #747 and the American Legion Post #15. Besides his wife, Mr. Garrish is survived by three sons: Martin, Raymond and Clifton Garrish, all of Ocracoke; one daughter, Janie Garrish of Ocracoke; one brother, Jule Garrish of Ocracoke; three sisters: Carrie Salter of Atlantic City, Bertha O'Neal of Ocracoke, and Aldenia Whitehurst of Beaufort. (The Coastland Times - Sunday, July 7, 1996) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ GARRISH, Robert Lee NORFOLK - Robert Lee GARRISH died March 9, 1999. He was born in Ocracoke, N.C., on June 27, 1913, the son of Alexander Norman and Elecia Gaskill Garrish. Bob was certified as an ordinary seaman by the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation of the Department of Commerce on Aug. 24, 1938. He rose to the position of ship pilot and received many commendations from the captains of the ships he brought safely into harbor. He retired from the Naval Station in Norfolk on June 29, 1973, after more than 35 years of honorable and faithful service. Bob was a Mason, a member of Scottish Rite Bodies and the Elks Club. Perhaps his greatest achievement and blessing, though, was that he was that rare individual who enjoyed the love, respect and admiration of all who knew him. His gentleness and good cheer will be deeply missed by family and friends. Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sara, who died on Feb. 28, 1999. He is survived by a niece, Carolyn Jane Garrish of Manistee, Mich.; two nephews, Kenneth Garrish of Ocracoke, N.C., and Lee and wife, Jean Garrish, of Greenville, N.C.; and a niece by marriage, Betty P. Brinkley of Raleigh, N.C. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. Mrs. Garrish was born in Corolla, the daughter of the late Wesley and Isabelle Austin. She was a member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church where she was an organist for over 40 years before retiring in 1974. She was a graduate of St. Paul's School where she studied music. She was very active in church and community activities. She was predeceased by her husband, James D. Garrish, Sr. Survivors include three sons and their wives: James and Madora Garrish, Jr. of Ocracoke, Walter Potter and Germaine Garrish of Hampton, New Hampshire, and Carlton Ward and Linda Garrish of Ocracoke; seven grandchildren: James Garrish, III, and Roger Garrish of Ocracoke, Sheila Fogarty of Fairfield, Connecticut, Michael Garrish of Derry, New Hampshire, Karen Jefferson of Virginia Beach, Va., Kathleen Hanson of Rochester, New Hampshire and Robert Garrish of Portsmouth, New Hampshire; two step-children: Warwick Boos and Sandy Morris of Ocracoke; 11 great-grandchildren and 1 step-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted on July 3rd by the Rev. R.D. Shinkle at the United Methodist Church of which she was a lifelong member. Burial was in the family cemetery. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Walter O'Neal of Ocracoke; and six grandchildren: Irving Garrish of Wilmington, Delaware, Myron Garrish, Jr. of Norfolk, Walter C. Johnson in Raleigh. Born in Washington County on April 9, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Lofton and Pearl Blake Smith. She was the widow of John Elbert Garrish who died January 24, 1994. Surviving are two sons: Charles R. Garrish of Scranton and Carl A. Garrish of Swan Quarter; a daughter, Karen G. GARRISH, 83, died in his sleep Monday, June 15, while at a temporary residence in Chesapeake. He was a native of Ocracoke and a 26-year Navy veteran, having served in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during World War II. After retiring from the Navy, he worked with Forest and Parks of Maryland for a number of years before returning to Ocracoke. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor; a son, James W. Garrish and his wife Toshiko; a grandson, Jeffery; granddaughter, Christina, of San Diego, California; and two sisters: Mickey (Mrs. Ronald O'Neal) and Dorothy Garrish, both of Ocracoke. OCRACOKE - Ocracoke was saddened on Saturday by the deaths of Robert Benjamin O'Neal, 66 years of age, and Benjamin D. GASKILL, 82 years of age. Ben O'Neal, as he was called by all, was born and raised here. He served during World War I. He had been hospitalized and in ill health for sevaral months. He is survived by his wife, Fannie Williams O'Neal; a daughter, Mrs. Gabriella Smith; three sons: John, Fowler, and Ronald; three sisters: Gabriella Roberts of Fairfield, Eleanor Ballance and Tressie Howard of Ocracoke; and four brothers: John, Willis, and Walter [only 3 named]. Funeral services were held at the home at 5 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Ernest Powlesland of the Assembly of God officiating. On Sunday morning at 10 a.m. Rev. Powlesland conducted services at the Methodist Church for Ben Gaskill. He had been a member of the church for 47 years. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Ellen Gaskill; five sons: Enoch of Madison, Owen, Clinton, Wilbur and Christopher, all of Ocracoke; one brother: J. Lum Gaskill; one sister, Mrs. Sue Scarborough of Ocracoke. Both of the deceased were buried in the Ocracoke cemetery. Mr. Gaskill was born on Ocracoke Island in 1909 to Benjamin and Sarah O'Neal Gaskill. He was retired from the National Park Service at Ocracoke, and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of Ocracoke United Methodist Church and was a Mason and Shriner and a member of the VFW. Surviving are his wife, Mabel Murray Gaskill of the home; one step-daughter, Carol Williams of Winston-Salem; one step-son, David A. Brown, Jr. of Winston-Salem; three brothers: Clinton Gaskill and Owen Gaskill, both of Ocracoke, Enoch Gaskill of Madison and Ocracoke; and 3 nephews. Burial was in Woodland Cemetery with Masonic graveside rites. Mr. Gaskill, a native of Ocracoke, had resided in Madison for 44 years, where he was a retired postal clerk from the Madison Post office. He was a former deacon at his church former member of the Madison Lions Club, a member of the Dan River Masonic Lodge #129 and a World War II veteran. GASKILL, 79, died this morning, the 1st, at his home in Ocracoke. He was found dead by his son, John Gaskill. Funeral services were held at the home this afternoon with Rev. Whitaker and Rev. Hale officiating. Burial was in the family graveyard. He was the last generation of Gaskill's, his brothers, Ben and Bill preceded him. He is survived by two sons: J.L. and John, both of Ocracoke; three daughters: Mrs. Felix Fleigh of Newport News, Va., Mrs. Nora Bruce of Texas, and Miss [__too dim__] R. Mr. Gaskill served in the Spanish-American War and was for many years in the USCG, living the latter years of his life in retirement. "Miss Molly" had been in ill health for a year or more and had grown considerably worse in the past few months. She was the daughter of Robert B. and Selectra F. Woolard. Funeral services were conducted by Theodore Rondthaler using the Methodist rites. Burial was in the Community Cemetery. Surviving are five daughters: Mrs. F.S. Farmer, Sr. of Richmond, Mrs. Frank Wample of Richmond, Va., Mrs. Elisha Garrish, Miss Bertie Gaskill and Mrs. J. Styron, all of Ocracoke; and several grandchildren. Mrs. Farmer and Mrs. Wampler and her daughter Margaret Vann, had been called here last week when it became apparent that Mrs. Gaskill was worse. A grandson, Robert Lee Garrish, and Mrs. Garrish arrived from Norfolk just before the funeral service. She was the daughter of the late James and Cora Spencer Casey and the wife of Thurston Gaskill, currently residing at Britthaven Nursing Home. Gaskins, Sr. She was a homemaker and attended the Ocracoke United Methodist Church. She was active in the Methodist Women and was a member of the Ocracoke Preservation Society. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mamie Spencer Gaskins, and one son, Thaddeus Gaskins, Jr. of Key West, Florida; one brother, Joseph Gaskins of Ocracoke; 3 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He spent his whole life, with the exception of three years in Florida, at Ocracoke and was known for his expert ability as a carpenter and best builder. (The Coastland Times - Thursday, January 5, 1995; pg. 6A) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ GIBBS, Evone Douglas ENGELHARD - Evone Douglas GIBBS, 79, of Route 1, died Tuesday, December 23, at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven. Born in Hyde County on August 13, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Selby and Elizabeth Harris Douglas. She was a member of the Pleasant Grove Church of Christ and a former member of Hyde County #213 of the Order of the Eastern Star. Surviving are three sons: Robert Leon Gibbs of Wake Forest, Jesse Harold Gibbs of Fayetteville, and Clyde B. Gibbs of Pinetown; a daughter, Jo Ellen G. Cutrell of Engelhard; two brothers: Harry Douglas of Elizabeth City and Horace Douglas of Moyock; five sisters: Clydia Mae Brinkley of Virginia Beach, Va., Virginia Nobles of Manteo, Mary Alice Bland of Robersonville, Earlene Daw of Plymouth, and Elizabeth D. Gibbs of Engelhard; 14 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Mrs. Gibbs was preceded in death by brothers: Earl Lee Douglas, Carroll D. Douglas and Eugene Douglas, and a granddaughter, Gloria Denise Gibbs. Funeral services were held on Friday, December 26, at the family plot in Soule cemetery. (The Coastland Times - Sunday, December 28, 1997; pg. 10A) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ GIBBS, Florence O'Neal SWAN QUARTER - Florence O'Neal GIBBS, 87, of Route 1, died Wednesday, May 6, at Cross Creek Health Care Center where she had been a resident for a few weeks. Born November 16, 1910 in the Lake Landing community of Hyde County, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Sudie Berry O'Neal. She was the widow of Frank Gibbs who died in 1955. She was a member of the Swan Quarter Baptist Church and had been a resident of the Swan Quarter community for more than 60 years. Surviving are four sons: Richard Eugene Gibbs, Archie Lee Gibbs and Elbert Lewis Gibbs, all of Swan Quarter, and Joseph Allen Gibbs of Huntingtown, Md.; a daughter, Mary Louise G. Rivas of Alto, New Mexico; a sister, Estelle O. Smith of Dunn; two brothers: Charlie O'Neal of Engelhard and Allen O'Neal of Belhaven; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Gibbs was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Dean Gibbs and brothers, Harry O'Neal and Herbert O'Neal. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the family plot in Soule Cemetery with Rev. Bill Wilson officiating. Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter. (The Coastland Times - Thursday, May 7, 1998; pg. 11A) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ GIBBS, SR., Floyd Guy ENGELHARD - Floyd Guy GIBBS, SR., 79, of Golden Street, died early Friday, August 23, at his home. Born in Hyde County on June 7, 1917, he was the son of the late Ewell and Annie J. Spencer Gibbs. Mr. Gibbs was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was a commercial fisherman and was a well-known guide who served hunters for more than 40 years. He also operated a game room in Engelhard between 1975 and 1985 and took special time with many young people. Surviving are his wife, Nina Cutrell Gibbs; two sons: Henry Lane Gibbs and Floyd G. "F.G." Gibbs, Jr., both of Engelhard; a sister, Etha G. Marshall of Autumnfield of Belhaven; and 3 grandchildren. Mr. Gibbs was preceded in death by brothers: Henry, Leslie, Nat and Abbott; and a sister, Viola G. Paul. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the family plot in Fulford Cemetery. (The Coastland Times - Sunday, August 25, 1996; pg. 10A) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ GIBBS, Frankie MIDDLETOWN - Frankie GIBBS, 15, of Middletown, became the fourth person to die of accidental drowning this year in Hyde County when he was drowned Monday afternoon while swimming with a group in a pool at Middletown. The boy reportedly got out unto the water over his head and went down about 4:45 p.m.. His body was recovered about an hour later and he was pronounced dead by Dr. H.J. Liverman. Coroner Pratt Williamson ruled an inquest unnecessary. Funeral services for the victim were held Wednesday at 3 p.m. from the Engelhard Christian Church, conducted by the Rev. A.W. Huffman and the Rev. Walter P. Armstrong. Burial was in the family cemetery. He was the son of B. Frank Gibbs and the late Lydia Neal Gibbs of Middletown. He was a member of the Engelhard Christian Church and a student at Engelhard High School. Surviving in addition to his father are his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ellen Neal of Washington, N.C; three brothers and four sisters [not named].
