HAGOOD, 44, of Arlington, formerly of Engelhard, died August 16, in Arlington after a gallant and courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Beaufort County on November 6, 1950 to Mattie M. Berry of Engelhard and the late Earl Berry. She was married to Richard Hagood of Raleigh in 1972. Mrs. Hagood was educated in Hyde County Schools, graduating from Mattamuskeet School in 1969. She received a degree in business from Hardbarger School of Business in Raleigh in 1970. She was a member of Rush Creek Baptist Church where she was leader of the Awana Girls Auxiliary. She was a homemaker. Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are daughters: Kelly and Stacey of the home; sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Freddie Harris of Askewville; four nieces and one nephew; maternal grandfather, Dan Midgette of Edenton. Preceding her in death are her father, Earl Berry, a sister, Barbara Berry, and a brother, Bradley Berry. The funeral was held August 18 at Emerald Hills Funeral Home in Kennedale. Burial was at Emeral Hills Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 9, at 2 p.m. at Engelhard Baptist Church where she attended during her youth and was pianist for several years. Born in Hyde County, she was the daughter of the late John Harvey and Cornelia Petra Jordan Neal. She was the widow of Oliver Kemp "O.K." Hall who died in 1996. She was the co-owner of the former Channell Recording Studio and was a member of the Pleasant Grove Church of Christ in Hyde County. Surviving are a daughter, Olivia Kay H. Hall of Engelhard; 2 granddaughters; a niece and a nephew. Mrs. Hall was also preceeded in death by two sisters: Hannah Mae Neal Wright and Julia Neal. Born in Engelhard, she was the daughter of the late Ivedell and Theola Gibbs Spencer. She worked for several years as a teacher in elementary education, having taught last in Texas. Surviving are her husband, Laurence Craig Hammond; two sons: Alexander Hammond of Virginia Beach, Va. and Nathaniel Hammond of Hampton, Va.; a daughter, Pamela Hammond of Richmond, Va.; three half-sisters: Jackie S. Gibbs of Engelhard, Lorraine S. Sadler of Williamston and Janet S. Midgett of Stumpy Point; 1 grandchild. Funeral services have been set for 11 a.m. Saturday in the Pleasant Grove Church of Christ in Fairfield. Phil Emmert and Steve Bryan will officiate. Burial will follow in Fulford Cemetery, Engelhard. Mrs. Hampton, a native of Brevard, was the daughter of Charles Spurgeon and Ellen Bishop Osborne. She was a homemaker and member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church. Mrs. Hampton is survived by her husband, Thomas Dancy Hampton of the home; two daughters: Martha Ann Hampton of Brevard, and Julia Elizabeth McKeldin of Baltimore, Md.; three sons: Charles Thomas Hampton of Satellite Beach, Fla., James William Hampton of Pisgah Forest, and Alfred Dancy Hampton of Burlington, Ontario Canada; one sister, Ruth Osborne Sams of Brevard; 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hardie was born in Hyde County, daughter of the late Jeremiah and Virginia Dare Alcox Jennette. She worked as a nutrition site manager in Washington and a nurse in Staten Island, N.Y. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She was the widow of Andrew Joseph Hardie. Surviving are four daughters: Rose Hersey of Ambler, Pa, Ann Padilla of Bowling Green, Ky., Lynn Cantor of Bethesda, Md. and Cheryl Young of Albany, Ore.; two sons: Gerald Hardie of Shrewsbury, N.J. and Richard Hardie of Redondo Beach, California; two sisters: Violet J. O'Neal of Washington and Maggie Belle J. McHorney of Virginia Beach, Va.; two brothers: Garland W. Jennette of Swan Quarter and Jeff Jennette of Staten Island; and 11 grandchildren. Richard Bartholomew officiating. Burial will follow at Fulford Cemetery in Engelhard, N.C. Born in Canton, Ohio, Nina Hardison was the daughter of the late Harrison and Mollie Dalton. She was employed by Falcon Cable in Kitty Hawk, N.C. and an active member of the Dare County Breast Cancer Society. She was a member of the Swan Quarter Baptist Church. Survivors include son, Michael S. Hardison and former husband and close friend, Jerry O. Hardison; sisters include Dixie Marlene Post of Ayden, N.C., Sharon "Sherrie" Carawan of Swan Quarter, N.C. and Rosalee Dalton of Engelhard, N.C.; brothers include Arkey Dalton and Harry J. A native of Hyde County, she was the daughter of the late John and Maggie Cox Silverthorne. She was the widow of Warren Spencer Harris, Jr. She was a member of Middletown Christian Church, Shepherd's Staff and Hyde Focus on Aging in which she was instrumental in planning for the building and completion of the Hyde Senior Center. She was a member of Hyde Chapter #213, Order of Eastern Star and was a past Matron. She retired in 1981 after serving for many years as bookkeeper with Hyde County Board of Education. Funeral services were held Friday in Middletown Christian Church with Dr. Frank Wibiril and the Rev. Robert Parvin officiating. Burial was in Fulford Cemetery. Surviving are three daughters: Merle Anne H. Harrison of Fayetteville, Betty H. Lloyd of Plymouth, and Barbara H. A native of Engelhard, he had been a peninsula resident for 10 years. Most of his life he was a self-employed fisherman. He was a member of the Middletown Christian Church in Middletown. He is survived by four daughters: Sandra H. Wilkins of Durham, Jean H. Langdon of Pleasant Garden, New York, Mary Harris of New York, N.Y., and Nell H. Page of Yanceyville; two sons: Michael R. Mr. Harris was a former employee of Otis Elevator Company and served in the merchant marines for 10 years, four of which were in World War II. Surviving are his wife, Doris A. Harris; two daughters: Delores Gollihar of Washington state and Zola Patemo of Fort Myers Beach, Florida; 7 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She was born Feb. 27, 1912, at Swan Quarter, N.C., in Hyde County. She was predeceased by her husband, Sell D. Harris and her eldest daughter, Joyce H. Smithwick of Florence, S.C. She is survived by her youngest daughter, Priscilla H. Kaufman of Chesapeake; her sisters, Kathleen Whitley of Pantego, N.C., and Grace Spencer of Swan Quarter; her brother, Joshua Cahoon of Norfolk; 4 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. Survivors include four daughters: Nydia Jackson, Addie Rea, Elizabeth Reamey and Edith Johnson; and one son, Milbern Harris, all of Portsmouth; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great- grandchildren. The funeral was conducted Aug. 31 by Elder Booker T. Boomer at the Piney Grove Disciples Church. A large crowd attended the funeral. He had been three times married, his living wife being Julia Harris Credle. He is survived by several sons and daughters. He had been a deacon for 30 years in his church and a preacher for 15 years. Born in Hyde County on July 29, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Bennett Rose and Elizabeth Jarvis Rose. She was married to Harvey Elmo Harris on December 23, 1925. He died October 28, 1974. She was a member of Swan Quarter Christian Church. Surviving are three sons: Percy A. Harris of Fairfield, Thomas Sherrill Harris of Swan Quarter and George B. Harris of Roanoke Rapids; a daughter, Christine H. Kelly of Roanoke Rapids; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by a daughter, Eva Mae Walker; a son, Floyd Harris; her eight sisters: Omey R. Rose, Annie R. Brinn, Melissa R. Midgette, Dixie Mae R. Brinn, Della R. (The Coastland Times - Sunday, June 30, 1996) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ HARRIS, James Thomas SWAN QUARTER - Funeral services for James Thomas HARRIS of Swan Quarter, who died at his home Saturday at 8:15 p.m., were conducted Monday afternoon from the Swan Quarter Christian Church by Rev. Howard Williams, Rev. Macon Spencer and Merlin Berry. Burial was in Soule Cemetery near Swan Quarter. The young man was afflicted with something similar to polio while in the fourth grade and it developed into a condition which soon made him an invalid. For the past 15 years he had been continuously under the direct care of his mother. He was born near Swan Quarter on November 16, 1929, the son of Mrs. Pearl Fisher Harris and the late Thomas B. Harris. He had been a member of Geneva Park Christian Church in Portsmouth, Va. since July 18, 1948. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are one brother, Henry G. Harris of Portsmouth, Va.; three half-sisters: Mrs. Troy Silverthorne of Portsmouth, Va., Mrs. Lundy Hudson of Roanoke Rapids and Mrs. Louisa Jordan of Fayetteville; two half-brothers: Benjamin C. Cahoon and Robert Cahoon of Portsmouth, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Born in Bangor, Maine, she was a resident of Hyde County for many years and was the widow of William W. Harris. HARRIS of Lake Comfort died on the 1st inst. at the age of 73. He was stricken with LeGrippe which developed into pneumonia. Mr. Harris was a leading man in his neighborhood, had been a Justice of the Peace for several years and at one time county commissioner. His wife preceded him to the grave almost thirty years ago. He leaves a son and daughters to cherish him memory. He was born December 13, 1918 in Swan Quarter to the late Seth Blount and Lillian Pedrick Harris, Sr. He was the widower of Frances Harris and Marie Harris. He was preceded in death by a brother, Linwood Harris. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He was retired from the Army Corps of Engineers. Mr. Harris was a member of Hickory United Methodist Church, a past president of Hickory Ruritan Club and a member of the Albemarle Chapter of Emmaus. He is survived by a son, Seth "Pat" Blount Harris, III and his wife Jeanna of Cheasapeake; a sister, Ollie Lee of Swan Quarter; two nieces: Lila Carawan of Ahoskie, and Betty Swindell of Swan Quarter; a step-daughter, Brandy; and a godchild. Funeral services were held December 30 in Hickory United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tom Mercer with burial in Old Hollywood Cemetery in Elizabeth City. She was the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Allan HUDSON and made her home in Roanoke Rapids the past 45 years, where two sons live. Her children are Mrs. Deward Reynolds of Columbia and Elmo and Cephas Harris, both of Roanoke Rapids. HARRIS, 87, died Monday morning at the home of a son, Dr. Guy V. Harris in Durham. A former resident of Belhaven, he was a member of the Belhaven Methodist Church, a Mason and an Odd Fellow. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rebecca Berry Harris; one son, Dr. Guy Harris; three sisters: Mrs. Jerome Jarvis, Mrs. Tim Carawan and Mrs. Archie Baum, all of Swan Quarter. Funeral services were conducted at Soule Methodist Church at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon by the Rev. Durwood Goodwin. Interment was in Soule Cemetery here. Mr. Harris was the son of the late Robert W. Harris and Bettie Midgette Harris. He became a resident of Belhaven in 1913. When he retired in 1954, he was Clerk of the Recorder's Court of Belhaven. He taught the Men's Bible Class of the Belhaven Methodist Church for 25 years. For many years he was one of the leading members of the Odd Fellows in Belhaven, and served as Noble Grand several years. Mr. Hooker is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lilly Burrus Hooker; three children: Delia Chloe, 19 years old, Latney Bonner, 8 years old, and a four month-old baby; his father, Walter M. Hooker, and his mother, Virginia Hooker of Aurora; a brother, Percy H. Hooker of Durham; two sisters: Mrs. Virginia Oden and Miss Ella Hooker. Mr. Hooker was killed in an automobile accident Monday. He was about 40 years old and served in the World War. Early in 1919, Mr. Hooker came to Engelhard where he joined with local citizens in organizing the Engelhard Bank and Trust Company, of which he was cashier, to the date of his tragic death. Mr. Hooker, by strict adherence to his duty in the conduct of the affairs of the bank, brought it to where it was regarded as one of the safest banks in east Carolina. Mrs. Howard, a homemaker, was born in Swan Quarter, N.C., and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. She was the widow of John L. Howard and was predeceased by a son, Johnnie M. Howard. Survivors include three daughters, Ruth N. Howard and Mamie H. Miller, both of Boston and Ruby P. Howard of Norfolk; two sons, James D. Howard of Norfolk and Richard C. Howard of Boston; two sisters, Beulah White Green of Washington, N.C. and Margaret White Burton of New York, N.Y.; a brother, Isiah White of Washington, N.C.; 7 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Bethleham Baptist Church with the Rev. A.D. Wright presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The remains will be ready for viewing Thursday at 3 p.m. The family will assemble at the residence at 12:30 Friday for the procession. The remains will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Friday. A native of Ocracoke, he was the son of the late Hatton H. and Chloe Ann O'Neal Howard and the widower of Elizabeth Lorraine Gaskins Howard. He was retired from Rural Electric Membership Corporation and was formerly with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was also a member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church. Mr. Howard is survived by one daughter, Lorraine H. Burrus of Hatteras; one son, Lindsey B. Howard of Elizabeth City; one sister, Virginia Dare Howard of Norfolk, Va., one brother, Harold H. Howard of Pennsauken, New Jersey; 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Ocracoke United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bugle Drive, died Aug. 28, 1991, in a Portsmouth hospital. Mr. Hudson was born in Newport News. He had retired as a mold loftsman from Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 28 years. He was a member of Taylor Road Baptist Church. He had served in the National Guard. Survivors include his wife, Thelma R. Hudson; a daughter, Mary E. Potter of Chesapeake; four sons, Richard Hudson Jr., Walter R. Hudson and William E. Hudson, all of Portsmouth, and Donald A. Born in Engelhard on April 7, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Solomon S. and Patsy Stowe Marshall. She graduated from school in Engelhard, served in the Woman's Army Corps for a brief period in 1943 and then married Donald Dean Hunter, to whom she was married for 52 years. She returned to her native Engelhard in July 1976 after living in several different areas during her husband's military career. She was a member of Engelhard United Methodist Church. Surviving with her husband are two daughters: Elizabeth Hunter Jewell of Belhavrn and Deborah Hunter Kohut of Douglasville, Pa.; a brother, Sam Sherrill Marshall of Engelhard; four sisters: Calla Meade M. Bonner of Greenville, Sarah Elizabeth M. Cahoon, Charlotte M. Neal and Edla M. Shaffer, all of Engelhard; 3 granddaughters: Kristen Gibbs of Engelhard, Laura and Amy Kohut, both of Douglasville, Pa. Mrs. Hunter was preceded in death by eight brothers and four sisters. Funeral services were set for 2 p.m. Saturday at the family plot in Fulford Cemetery. Rev. L.R. Kent CHOCOWINITY - M. Kent HURST, 77, died Saturday, September 26, at Beaufort County Hospital in Washington. He had been a resident of Britthaven in Washington for some time. Born in Oxford, Florida on January 3, 1921, he was the son of the late Ray and Myra Godbolt Hurst. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during World War II and was retired as power plant manager with DuPont. He resided in Grifton from 1963-96 and was a member of Grifton's First Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Stella Williams Hurst; three daughters: Diantha H. Coley and her husband Ralph of Swan Quarter, Sharon H. Buck and her husband Dalton of Chocowinity, and Deborah H. Llopiz and her husband Oscar of Stuart, Florida; a foster daughter, Peggy Turnquist and her husband Nelson of Walpole, Mass.; a brother, Ray Hurst of Leesburg, Florida; 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Hurst. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday in the Chapel of Hillside Funeral Service on Hwy. 264-East. The Rev. Henry Horne officiated. Burial followed in Soule Cemetery in Swan Quarter.
