Berry of Gambrills, Md.] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ JONES, Walter B. FARMVILLE, N.C. - Mourners turned out on street corners Wednesday to pay respects to the late U.S. Rep. Walter B. JONES, the only congressman many of them had known. Jones, whose political career carried him from the Farmville town hall to leadership on Capitol Hill, died Tuesday in a Norfolk hospital. He was 79. He had represented his northeastern North Carolina district on Capitol Hill for 26 years. The congressman's body was flown by Coast Guard helicopter from Norfolk to the airstrip in Kill Devil Hills. From there, a procession formed for a four-hour 145-mile drive to a funeral home near his home in Farmville. The procession traveled through Dare, Hyde, Beaufort and Pitt counties in the southern part of the old 21-county 1st Congressional District. The cortege drove along U.S. Route 264, a highway of farming and fishing communities that Jones traveled many times throughout his 45-year political career. Along the route, flags flew at half staff and traffic stopped as the black and gray hearse bearing the congressman's body passed. The procession included Jones' second wife, Elizabeth Fischer Jones; his son, state Rep. Walter B. Jones Jr., and his daughter, DotDee Slaughter. In Manteo, a half-dozen people stood at an intersection to await the cortege, which drove through town at 11:15 a.m. "Flags for the Babe Ruth leagues, the senior center on the beach, just a phone call,'' said Lois Twyne, of Manteo, as she wiped tears. "Just a dear friend.'' In Engelhard, about 50 people lined both sides of the highway in the eastern Hyde County community to pay their respects to the congressman and his family. "I only remember three representatives in my lifetime - Lindsay Warren, Herbert Bonner and Walter Jones,'' said Murl Carawan, 57, a security officer for a bank in Engelhard. ``It's going to be hard to replace him. As a matter of fact, you don't replace people of his character.'' "I know that he has always been there for people in his district,'' said Jo Ellen Cuthrell, 40, an administrative assistant at the bank. "He was always willing to listen.'' About 10 miles west, 30 student government representatives and their teachers stood in front of Mattamuskeet High School as the cortege passed. The principal addressed the students before the procession arrived to describe what the congressman had done for Hyde County. Hyde residents said Jones will be remembered for his help to build a high-rise bridge that crosses the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway in the western part of the county. The bridge, crossed by the procession en route to Farmville, bears Jones' name. "Everybody here felt that if they needed someone, Jones would be there for them,'' said math teacher Cathy Johnson, 30. "He was always easily accessible to the public.'' Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in Greenville Memorial Baptist Church, 1510 Greenville Blvd., in Greenville. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery on Green Street in Farmville. WNHW-FM, Nags Head, reported Wednesday that Elizabeth Fischer Jones will meet with friends at the Jones' south Nags Head cottage from 2-6 p.m. on Saturday. Photo by Walter V.
