Broughton; pg. 159] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ LEE, Ollie Harris SWAN QUARTER - Ollie Harris LEE, 82, of Swan Quarter, died Sunday, July 27, at Cross Creek Health Care Center where she had been a patient for the past five years. Born in Hyde County on March 28, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Seth and Lillian Pedrick Harris. She previously worked in the Register of Deeds office where her husband, the late Bonner R. Lee, served as Register of Deeds and Tax Collector for Hyde County. He died in June 1984. She was a member of Soule United Methodist Church where she was active in the United Methodist Women and Ladies Aide. Surviving are two daughters: Lila L. Carawan of Ahoskie and Betty L. Swindell of Swan Quarter; 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Soule United Methodist Church. The Rev. Chris Humphreys will officiate. Burial will be in Soule Cemetery. Born in Hyde County on December 26, 1907, he was the son of the late William Ernest and Lydia Midgette Lewis. He was the retired proprietor of the former Preston-Lewis Store on the Fairfield-Engelhard Road. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Mae Spencer Lewis; a daughter, Elgie Lewis Midyette; three brothers: Leslie Lewis and Wilbur L. Lewis, both of Fairfield, and Erdis Lewis of Elizabeth City; two sisters: Alma L. Williams and Erma Dell L. Spencer, both of Fairfield; 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grand- children. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Diana Keyzer, who died April 25, 1982. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the family plot in Fulford cemetery. Mrs. Linton was a native of Hyde County, daughter of the late Samuel and Cottie Llewellyn Clark. Mrs. Linton worked as a cosmotologist and also worked with Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Co. for a number of years. She was the widow of George W. Clark, who died in 1958, and Eugene Sprugeon Linton, who died in 1986. She was president of the Belhaven Lioness Club, past president of the Matcha Pungo Garden Club. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Belhaven. Surviving are a daughter, Linda C. Heekin of Goldsboro; two step-daughters: Nina C. Powell of Pantego and Iris C. Coker of Pensacola, Fla.; two step-sons: G. Curtis Clark of Pantego and Charles G. Clark of Belhaven; two grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren and eight step-great-grand- children. Funeral services were held Monday in the First Christian Church in Belhaven, with Marshall L. Parvin, Jr. and the Rev. Bill Harrelson officiating. Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery in Washington. Montelle Majure SWAN QUARTER - S. Montelle Majure LIPPS, 82, of Swan Quarter, died April 14 at Cross Creek Health Care Center. Born in Dixon, Miss., she was the daughter of the late Sidney A. and Sarah L. Stribling Majure. She was the widow of John Price Lipps. Mrs. Lipps lived in Anthony, N.M. and Texas for 46 years prior to moving to Swan Quarter in 1984 where she made her home with her daughter and son-in-law. Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Margie E. Brooks of Swan Quarter; one granddaughter and one great- grandson. The family will receive friends at Bryan Funeral Service in Swan Quarter on Saturday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. A graveside service is set for Monday, April 18 in Restlawn Cemetery, El Paso,Texas. Litchfield. Survivors include two stepdaughters, Gerry Zirkle of Winchester and Glema Donald of Mechanicsville; three stepsons, Randall B. Owens of Winchester, Rodney F. Owens of Charlotte and Gregory L. Takacs of Chesapeake; a sister, Rosa L. Baker of Fort Smith, Ark.; a brother, Walter C. Litchfield of Elizabeth City; and 12 grandchildren. Born in Stumpy Point on January 16, 1926, he was the son of the late George Walter and Bell Cleo Osborne Litchfield. He was a graduate of the former Engelhard High School, served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WW II and was wounded by mortar on the beaches of Iwo Jima. He was returned to a Norfolk, Va. hospital and was later discharged on May 6, 1946 as a Disabled American Veteran. He spent many years in California where he owned and operated Goodyear Tire and Automotive Corp. until his retirement and return to Hyde County in 1993. He was a member of Soule United Methodist Church where he was a soloist and was active in the United Methodist men's Fellowship. Surviving are his wife, Janet C. Litchfield; two sons: George C. Litchfield of Yucaipa, California and Randolph Litchfield of Greenville; four daughters: Debra L. Ortega and Lou Ann L. Gibbs, both of Engelhard, Melissa A. Piazza of Whittier, California and Katrina M. Ingman of Fontana, California; two step-sons: Jeffery C. Landon of Pasadena, California and Joel R. Landon of South Pasadena, California; two step-daughters: Julie R. Sloan of Martinez, California and Jill C. Main St., a retired English and French teacher, died April 29, 1993 of cancer, in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. Mrs. Littrell was born in Woodland and was the widow of Ira Robert Littrell. She taught in the Murfreesboro, N.C., Lexington, Va., and Hyde County, N.C., school systems and retired in 1978 after 43 years. She was a member of the Religious Society of Friends, Rich Square Monthly Meeting in Woodland and was assistant clerk of Rich Square Monthly Meeting, clerk of the Quarterly Meeting of Ministers, Elders and Overseers, clerk of the Representative Body of the N.C. Yearly Meeting (Conservative), and representative to the Friends World Committee for Consultation. She was a member of International Society of Secondary School Teachers, National Education Association, N.C. English Teachers Association and the N.C. and American associations of Teachers of Foreign Languages. She was area president of Delta Kappa Gamma. Survivors include one daughter, Ruth Ennes Littrell and one son, the Rev. James H. Littrell, both of Philadelphia; two sisters, Ruth Parker Linville of Oak Ridge and Esther Parker Wethington of Woodland; two brothers, George C. Parker of George and James E. Parker of Roanoke Rapids; and two grandchildren. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Cedar Grove Friends Meeting House, Woodland. Burial will be in Friends Cemetery, Woodland. Born in Albany, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Roscoe and Minnie Bell Dalton Perkins. She was the widow of Wallace E. Lockyer, Sr. She moved to the area from Parma, Ohio. Mrs. Lockyer was a member of Engelhard Baptist Church. Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Wallace E. Lockyer of Engelhard; a daughter, Sheila Faye Lockyer of Kinston; a sister, Myra P. McWhorter of Annandale, Va.; one grandson and one great-granddaughter. A funeral service has been set for May 2 at 2 p.m. at the gravesite in Granger Fairview Cemetery, Granger, Ohio. The Rev. Mrs. Lowe was a Hyde County native, the daughter of the late Chancey J. and Lydia May Tyson Sawyer. She was the widow of Harry S. Brooks and the wife of Herman Reid Lowe of the home. She was a member of the Mt. Olive Church of Christ. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons: Harry S. "Buddy" Brooks, Jr., James Herman Lowe and William Lee Lowe, all of Scranton; two daughters: Sally Helen Keech of Pinetown and Edna Ruth Harrell of Washington; a brother, C.J. Mrs. Lowry, a native of Swan Quarter, taught at Weeksville School and retired after 37 years. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church and a former member of the M.O.A. Guild and the N.C. Association of Retired Teachers. In 1985, she was honored in Washington, D.C., by President Ronald Reagan on the 50th anniversary of the Rural Electric Association for her work on behalf of the association. She was the widow of Walter R. Lowry Sr. Survivors include a brother, Walton R. Brown of Elizabeth City, and 4 grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Salem Baptist Church by the Rev. Jesse R. Mansfield and the Rev. L.E. Stike. Burial will be in Old Hollywood Cemetery. REBURIAL RITES SET FOR SOLDIER IN HYDE - Swan Quarter, July 23 - The remains of Sgt. Charlie R. LUPTON, JR. will arrive in Swan Quarter Saturday. Sgt. Lupton was killed August 6, 1944, while serving as a turret gunner on a B-24 in England when returning from a mission over enemy territory. His plane and another collided in mid-air. The body was removed from the U.S. Military Cemetery in Cambridge, England. Sgt. Lupton was born January 31, 1921 in Norfolk, Va., son of Mr. and Mrs. C.R. Lupton. He came to Swan Quarter while a small child and was reared in the county, attending Swan Quarter High School and Presbyterian Junior College. He entered the Army in June 1943 and trained at Keesler Field in Mississippi, Scott Field in Illinois, Gunnery School at Harlingen, Texas, and Davis-Monthan Field in Tucson, Arizona, before being shipped overseas in July 1944. Funeral services will be held from Providence Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock conducted by the Rev. T.H. House, pastor, and assisted by the Rev. C.W. Guthrie of Wanchese, a former pastor. Interment will follow in Soule Cemetery. Surviving are his parents; one brother, Cecil Rhodes Lupton and his grandmother, Mrs. Eula Harris, all of Swan Quarter. A Hyde County native, she was the daughter of the late Griffin and Florida Green Sawyer. She was the widow of John Fred Lupton who died in 1991. Mrs. Lupton was a member of the United Methodist Women for many years, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, served as librarian at the George Library in Swan Quarter and later worked as secretary in the school bus maintenance office in Swan Quarter. She was a long time member of the Calvary Episcopal Church. Surviving are two brothers: Oswald Sawyer and Hansel Sawyer, both of New Bern; two sisters: Louise S. Waters of Belhaven, and Marie S. She was a long time member of Sladesville Home Demonstration Club and worked for many years in the area as a practical nurse. Surviving are a son, Leewood A. Lupton of Route 1, Scranton; 1 grandchild, 1 great-grandchild, 8 step-grandchildren, 19 step-great-grandchildren and 17 step-great-great-grandchildren. Born in the Sladesville community of Hyde County, January 9, 1906, he was the son of the late Silas Swain and Georgia Ann Robinson Lupton. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1924-28, served as a trustee for several years and was a former board member of the Morehead Foundation. He served for 6 years, 1961-66, as Representative from Hyde County in the N.C. General Assembly. He was active in community affairs serving as civil preparedness director for Hyde County for many years, served on the board of the Albemarle Commission, was a member of Southern Albemarle Association and was active in regional health care. He also served several years as a member of the Mid-East Housing Authority. He was a long time member of Providence United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Providence United Methodist Church. Rev. Chris Humphreys will officiate. Burial will follow in Soule Cemetery.
