A native of Hyde County, N.C., Mr. McCleese is survived by his brother, John McCleese Sr. of Columbia, N.C.; and many other relatives and friends. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Columbia, by the Rev. Casville Bowor. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include her husband, Raymond McDaniel; a daughter, Brenda J. Born in Swan Quarter, he attended Weaver College, and was a graduate of the UNC School of Pharmacy. He served in World War II as a captain in the Marine Corps. He was a sales representative for the Eli Lilly Company for 33 years. He retired in 1979. The funeral will be conducted Monday at 3 p.m. at University Methodist Church by the Rev. Bill Gattis. Burial will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Swan Quarter [Soule] cemetery. He is survived by his wife Betty McGowan; four daughters: Ann Abarno of Durham, Emily Birgel of Cary, Beth Lineberger of Winston-Salem, and Meg McGowan of Chapel Hill; two sons: David F. McGOWAN [Henry Lawrence McGowan, son of William & Rebecca Davis McGowan], one of the oldest citizens of Hyde County and former superintendent of public instruction and teacher in the schools of the county, will be held Friday morning at 10 o'clock at Sould [Soule] Methodist Church. The Rev. R.Z. Newton of Swan Quarter will conduct the services. Burial will be in Sould Cemetery. Mr. McGowan was 85 years old. He was born, reared and spent all of his life in Hyde County and lived near Swan Quarter. In recent years before his health failed, he had been engaged in farming. He was a member of the Methodist Church and was well known in this section. He died Wednesday night after an illness of three years (at his Hyde County home). Death was caused by angina and the infirmities of age. Surviving are his wife, who before marriage was Miss Effie Stotesbury of Hyde, and the following children: W.T. He had been in declining health for five years but death was unexpected. A native of Swan Quarter, he was born November 17, 1908, son of the late Dorman Steele and Florida Helen Jarvis McGowan. He was an agent for Charlotte Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. and was owner of the Towne House Coffee Shop. He belonged to the First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Hooper McGowan, whom he married in 1938; three sons: James Alton McGowan, Jr. of Dallas, Texas, John Burney McGowan, a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Dorman Jarvis McGowan, a student at Atlantic Christian College in Wilson; two daughters: Linda Sue (Mrs. James A.) McQueen of Chapel Hill and Mary Katheryn McGowan of the home; one brother, David Foy McGowan, Sr. of Chapel Hill; two sisters: Mildred Letha (Mrs. B. M.) Miss McGowan was a graduate of East Carolina Teachers College and taught in public schools in Wilmington, N.C. from 1927 until her retirement in 1964. Born in Hyde County on February 25, 1914, she was the daughter of the late William Jacob and Farrow Mae Smith Baum. She was a member of Watson's Chapel United Methodist Church and was long active in the United Methodist Women's Work. She was also a member of the Nebraska Home Demonstration Club. Mrs. McGrath was first married to William Swindell Dudley, Jr. who died in June 1961. She later married William Guy Marshall who died in September 1968, and was last married to Hammond William McGrath, who died in August 1974. Surviving are a son, William S. Dudley, III of Climax; three daughters: Larue D. Cunningham of West Columbia, S.C., Mary D. Cederdahl of LaMesa, California, and Ann D. Grant of Kinston; 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She was a retired seamstress with the Suskin and Berry Company; she was a former resident of Washington and a member of the First Baptist Church in Washington. She was a member of the London Bridge Baptist Church in Virginia Beach. Surviving are one daughter, Jeanette M. Singleton, of Virginia Beach; two sons: Benjamin M. She served as organist of Fairfield United Methodist Church for more than 70 years, taught music in the former Fairfield School for many years, was active in the United Methodist Women and the Fairfield Book Club. She was recognized as Hyde County "Woman of the Year". Surviving are a son, Richard Lee Mann, Jr. of Fairfield; a daughter, Betty Mann Carawan of Chesapeake, Va.; a brother, W. Durant Swindell of Raleigh; a sister, Catherine S. Bigelow of Barefoot Bay, Florida; 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. State Highway Commission as county supervisor after 42 years of service and was a member of the Engelhard United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Ruth McKinney Mann; and nieces and nephews. Spencer Mann of New York City; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Her husband was for the years of his lifetime, a prominent attorney of Hyde County, residing at Swan Quarter. Mrs. Mann was a native of Hyde County and after the death of her husband in 1940, she resided with her daughter, Mrs. Credle, in Belhaven. She was an active member of Trinity Methodist Church and daughter of the late Joseph M. and Mrs. Eliza Credle Watson. She was a licensed practical nurse at Virginia Beach General Hospital where she had worked for the past 27 years. MANN, well-known resident of Fairfield in Hyde County, died at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Taylor Hospital where she had been a patient since September 22. Death was caused by a complication of disease. She had been in failing health for the past year. Before her marriage to the late Thomas C. Mann, former sheriff of Hyde and one of the largest planters in the county, she was Miss Sara Jones of Swan Quarter. She was born September 5, 1879, the daughter of the late John Jones and Anice Jones, former residents of Swan Quarter. Mrs. Mann took an active interest in the life of her community, was a member of the Fairfield Methodist Church, of the Book Club and other civic organizations. Surviving are one son, Thomas C. Mann of Fairfield; a step-daughter, Mrs. R.E. Windley of Vanceboro; a half-sister, Mrs. Robert Thomas of Swan Quarter; and a half-brother, John Roberts of near Raleigh. (The Economist-Falcon Weekly - Friday, February 1, 1895) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ MANN, Thomas Jefferson LAKE LANDING - Thomas Jefferson MANN, 84, for many years a leading figure in Hyde County politics, succumbed at 6 o'clock Thursday at his home at Lake Landing of a cerebral hemorrhage. He had been in failing health for two years. A man of striking personality, he had the knack of making strong friendships and keeping friends. Until about two years before his death, he was active and was usually in attendance at all public gatherings where he enjoyed meeting the people he knew. He had spent his life a farmer and businessman during which time he held many county offices and positions of honor. Mr. Mann was first married to Miss Ella Gibbs and they had the following children who survive: Harvey B. of Washington, D.C., Norfleet of Lake Landing, Mrs. Wade H. Ferguson of LaGrange, and Mrs. T.A. Jennette of Lake Landing. After the death of his first wife, he married Mrs. Blanche Bonner of Lake Landing about 37 years ago. The following children of this union survive: Thurston Mann of Raleigh, Walter Burrus Mann of Cary, William A. Mann of Belhaven, and Mrs. C.T. Gunn of Atlantic. There are 10 grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Miss Janie Mann of Lake Landing. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Lake Landing, a Shriner of Sudan Temple, New Bern, and a lifelong member of Amity Methodist Church at Lake Landing from where the funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:30. Burial was in Amity churchyard. All of the children reached home for the funeral except Harvey Mann who is seriously ill with pneumonia in Washington. Mrs. Marshall was a member of Engelhard United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and was a former president of the Women's Society. She worked for many years at the original Engelhard Hotel, which was operated by her family, and later served as magistrate in Hyde County from 1968 until 1983. She was treasurer of the Amity Church Cemetery Fund. Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Murel Eugene Marshall; two sons: Murel Eugene Marshall, Jr. of Indianapolis, Indiana and Braxton Martelle Marshall of Engelhard; a daughter, Mrs. Norwood Lee (Mary Ann) Gibbs of Engelhard; a sister, Mitzi W. Hardee of Wilmington; 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Marshall was preceded in death by two sisters: Carey Watson Morrill in 1981 and an infant sister, Henrietta Mann Watson in 1912. Cox Service Station for 45 years and worked as a parts clerk at Williford Auto Supply in Engelhard for several months prior to his retirement due to health reasons. A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army and reached the rank of Corporal having served in Germany and Salzburg, Austria. He was a member of the Engelhard Christian Church, the American Legion and was the first chief of the Engelhard Volunteer Fire Department where he was active until his health caused his retirement. He was a past patron of the Berkley Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star and held several state level positions with the Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include his wife, Inez P. Meekins; two sons, Melvin C. Meekins of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Samuel Meekins Jr. of Virginia Beach; a sister, Edith Hooper of Manteo; and seven grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Miles Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Daniel K. Ivey. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Friends may join the family from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the Inez P. Born in Belhaven, April 10, 1979, he was the son of Hilton L. and Marie Gibbs Meekins. He attended Bath Elementary School where he graduated this past school year. Surviving are his parents; a sister, Shelly Meekins of Washington; his paternal grandmother, Doris G. Meekins of Engelhard; his maternal grandmother, Vergie Jones of Washington; his paternal great-grandmother, Nancy Gibbs of Engelhard. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Grove Church of Christ. Phil Emmert and Steve Bryan will officiate. Burial will follow in the Gibbs family cemetery at Rt. #1, Engelhard.
