Parker ELIZABETH CITY - A. Parker MIDGETT, 87, of Cedar Street, died Jan. 25 in the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was a native of Wanchese, and son of the late Peleg Dameron and Martha Jane Tillett Midgett. He was the husband of Mrs. Martha Berry Midgett. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the City Road United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Church St., Saturday evening from 7 to 8:30 o'clock. Twiford's Memorial Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements. Mr. Midgett received his education at Shenandoah Institute in Dayton, Virginia and at Trinity College, now Duke University. He was a member of the Pasquotank Tribe #8 Improved Order of the Red Men. Mr. Midgett had been a member of the City Road United Methodist Church since 1923, a member of its administrative board, Men's Bible Class, the Men's Breakfast Group, and held the position of treasurer for twenty-five years. In 1975, Mr. Midgett retired as treasurer of the Southern Loan & Insurance Co. and manager of the loans department. He was a former director and treasurer of the Elizabeth City Boy's Club. Mr. Midgett was a member of the Downtown Business Association and, since Feb. 26, 1987, had held an honorary membership. He was twice named "Businessman of the Year," in 1981 and 1986. Mr. Midgett served as Elizabeth City councilman for thirty years, from April 1, 1956 until February 2, 1987, serving as councilman longer than anyone in North Carolina. Upon his retirement, Mr. Midgett was honored by having the City Hall and City Annex named the A. Parker Midgett Municipal Building. He was a member of the N.C. League of Municipalities for many years and served on its board of directors from 1981 to 1983. He was also a member of the Elizabeth City Senior Citizen Club. Besides his wife, Mr. Midgett is survived by one son, Robert Parker Midgett of Greensboro, one step- daughter, Mrs. Carole Morgan Sawyer of Atlanta, Ga; one step-son, Charles Richard Morgan of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers: Peleg D. Midgett, Jr. of Engelhard and John Barker Midgett of Hillsborough; 4grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. A native of Ocracoke, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Theresa Styron Williams and the widow of Ralph Midgett. She was a homemaker and a member of the Ocracoke Assembly of God Church. Mrs. Midgett is survived by two sons: Thomas Midgett and Jerry Midgett, both of Ocracoke; 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Ocracoke Assembly of God Church on Tuesday, August 28, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in the Ocracoke Community Cemetery. He was born in Hyde County, N.C. and served with the U.S. Army for 12 years. He was a veteran of World War II. He is survived by one cousin, Mrs. Earline Roseboro. Mr. Midgett was born January 29, 1900 in Hyde County, the son of the late William "Billy" Carter and Nancy Jacqueline Cuthrell Midgett. Mr. Midgett married Mary Mae Overton on June 30, 1926. She preceded him in death on February 26, 1988. Mr. Midgett was a farmer, retiring in the early 1960's. He was a member of the Scranton Church of Christ. Survivors include seven daughters: Doris Clayton of the Ponzer community, Belhaven, Mattie Berry of Engelhard, Mary Robinson of Columbia, Jackie Williams of Belhaven, Mildred Chrismon of Washington, Nancy Brickhouse of Columbia and Melba Ambrose of Kill Devil Hills; three sons: William Earl Midgett of Mt. Dora, Florida, Robert Daniel "Bobby" Midgett of Bath and Gene Autry Midgett of Dallas, Georgia; two sisters: Sarah Perry of Edenton and Cora Chesson of Plymouth; 29 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were to be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Scranton Church of Christ, conducted by Linwood Adams. Burial was to be in the Mt. Olive Church of Christ cemetery. RICHMOND, VA. - A man who began life in Gulrock in Hyde County and rose to prominence in the seaboard railroad system, died Saturday at his home in Richmond. Harry J. MIDGETT, 62, grew up in Belhaven and moved to Richmond in 1958. His first wife was the late Blanche Wescott of Manteo. Several years ago he married Mrs. Cora H. Bundy of Belhaven who survives him. He is also survived by Mrs. Ludie Midgett, 93, distinguished resident and oldest citizen of Belhaven. His father was the late William B. Midgett. Also surviving are two daughters: Mrs. Browyne Morrisette of Richmond, and Mrs. J.P. Jones of Parsippany, New Jersey; two sisters: Mrs. C.C. Duke of Washington, and Mrs. M.L. Andrews of Belhaven; one brother, C.H. Midgett of Norfolk, Va.; and 3 grandchildren. Burial was at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk. Mrs. Midgett was a native of Richmond, Va. and a homemaker. She was the daughter of Marsden W. and Jacqueline Woody Wallace of Ocracoke and the wife of William T. Midgett of the home. Besides her parents and husband, she is survived by two daughters: Margaret Kimberly Midgett and Merian Elizabeth Midgett, both of Ocracoke; two sisters: Margaret W. Willis of Sea Level and Laurie Tubbs of Howenwald, Tenn.; and a maternal grandmother, Ruth Woody of Virginia Beach, Va. A memorial service will be held at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 13, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Clyde Denny, the Rev. John McPhee and the Rev. Aldred P. Wallace. (The Coastland Times - February 18, 1990) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ MIDGETT, JR., Peleg Dameron ENGELHARD - Peleg Dameron MIDGETT, JR. of Engelhard, died January 17 at Cypress Glen Methodist Retirement Home in Greenville where he had resided for the past two years. He was born in Wanchese and graduated from Trinity College (now Duke University) in 1922. Mr. Midgett moved from Craddock, Va. to Engelhard in December 1934, where he built, owned and operated Pamlico Power & Light Company beginning in 1935 until 1975 when the company was sold to Tideland EMC. In 1935, Mr. Midgett organized and was a charter member and the first president of the Engelhard Rotary Club. He was Rotary District Governor from 1953-54. He was an active member of the Engelhard United Methodist Church where he taught the Men's Bible Class for 30 years and chaired two committees to rebuild the church. Mr. Midgett chaired major charitable organizations in Hyde County and was a member of the NC senate from 1961-63. He also served on the board of directors and was a member of the Executive Committee of the East Carolina Bank, American Small Business Organizations; president of Southern Albemerle Association and Coastal Historyland of North Carolina. He is survived by one daughter, Martha M. Kelly of Newport News, Va.; three sons: P.D. Midgett. III of Southport, George E. Midgett of Denver, and Bernard W. Midgett of Buxton; one brother, John B. Midgett of Hillsboro; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Thursday, January 19, at 1 p.m. at the Engelhard United Methodist Church. He was the husband of Mrs. Lida Payne Midgett, formerly of Stumpy Point. He was a native of Hyde County, Gulrock, and was employed by the Southern Fish Co. in Norfolk. Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Glenyce Lee Bowers of Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. Linda Lou Daye of Morehead City, N.C., and Miss Gloria Marie Midgett of Norfolk; one son, Sherill Lee Midgett, Jr. of Norfolk; one sister, Mrs. Mabel Powell of Franklin; one half-brother, Dan Midgett of Norfolk; three half-sisters: Mrs. Darcy Etheridge of Wanchese, Mrs. Dave Ballance of Lowlands, and Miss Sylvia Midgett of Norfolk; his step-mother, Mrs. Clydia Midgett of Norfolk; one grandson, Billy Bowers of Philadelphia, Pa. Mrs. Midgett was born in Hyde County and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Manteo Baptist Church, Eastern Star Roanoke Island Chapter #79, XYZ Club and the Visually Impaired Person's Organization. She was the daughter of the late Isaiah S. and Carthina Pigram Harris and the wife of the late Luther Dick Midgett. Surviving are a daughter, Virginia Paulk of Parrish, Florida; two sisters: Peggy Conley of Chesapeake, Va. and Macel Dodd of Holiday Island; two brothers: Willie Harris of Norfolk, Va. and Isaiah Harris, Jr. of Chesapeake, Va.; and a great-grandchild. Richard MIDGETT, 89, prominent citizen of Engelhard in Hyde County, who died at his home Monday night after a short illness, were conducted Wednesday at noon and interment was in the Fulford Cemetery. He was a member of the Christian Church and was a life-long resident of Hyde County, the son of the late John and Mrs. Midgett. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. C. Lee Gibbs of Engelhard; a son, Charlie Midgett of Washington; a sister, Mrs. Mollie Sadler of Lake Landing. He was a well-known and highly respected citizen. Born in Tyrrell County on August 20, 1941, he was the son of the late Johnnie and Nellie Mae Davidson Midgette. He worked in the Norfolk area with Berkley Machine Works as a foreman for many years. Surviving are his wife, Gwendolyn Brinn Midgette; two sons: Joseph D. He was a member of McKendree United Methodist Church, Mattamuskeet Masonic Lodge No. 328, Englehard, and John Walter Royal Arch Chapter No. 68. Survivors include his wife, Lillian T. Midgette; three sons, Roland L. Midgette Jr. of Virginia Beach, and Paul G. Midgette and Lindsey A. A Hyde County native, he was the son of the late Zion Bunyan and Susan O'Neal Midgette of Sladesville. He retired from the U.S. Coast Guard in 1976 after 20 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He worked during his lifetime as a farmer and fisherman and enjoyed the trade of carpentry, and was a faithful member and deacon in the Sladesville Missionary Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons: David P. Midyette, Jr. and Gary E. Midyette, both of Scranton; four daughters: Marie M. Buck of Chocowinity, Carolyn I. Midyette of Kinston, June W. Midyette and Diane M. Born in Tyrrell County November 21, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Ludie Estelle Jones Berry. She was the wife of James Emery Midyette, Sr. Mrs. Midyette was a member of Watson's Chapel United Methodist Church in the Nebraska community and a homemaker. Surviving are her husband; three sons: James Emery Midyette, Jr. of Engelhard, Allen Dale Midyett of Greenville, S.C., and Jerry Van Midyette of Chapel Hill; two brothers: Ray Berry of Engelhard, Stephen A. "Bud" Berry of Franklinton; three sisters: Vivian O'Neal of Durham, Melba Davenport of Columbia, and Josephine Clifton of Williamston; 8 grandchildren; 13 nephews and 11 nieces. Sterling, when off Indian Island last night, was run down by the Old Dominion Steamer "Albemarle", which cut her completely in two. Capt. T.W. MIDYETTE, in charge of the "Cassie", was drowned. Capt. Midyette was at the wheel and in attempting to cross the bow of the "Albemarle", missed his calculations. The "Cassie" was a sloop about 25 feet long and 14 feet on the beam and was owned by Tobe Silverstone [Silverthorne?] in Hyde County. Capt. Midyette was only 16 years of age and unmarried. Mrs. Moore, a native of Hyde County, N.C., was the daughter of George Howard and Gertrude B. Howard Elliot. She was a member of New Galilee Baptist Church. She was the retired co-owner of New Carolina Restaurant, formerly on Church Street in Norfolk. From 1944 until 1985, Mrs. Moore and her husband operated one of the finest restaurants in Norfolk. When a customer entered New Carolina Restaurant, they knew they would be greeted with a smile and would be served one of the most delectable meals ever. In 1985 the restaurant closed its doors after 41 years of fine service to Norfolk residents. She was also a member of the Evergreen Social and Savings Club. Survivors include her husband, Quincy Moore Jr. of the home; a daughter, Ruth A. Jackson of Chesapeake; a sister, Beadie H. Hunter of Chesapeake; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Raylor and Mrs. Josephine Brewer of Norfolk; five brothers: John, Percy and Fred Dunn of Norfolk, Hugh Dunn of Stonewall and Talmadge Dunn of Bangor, Maine; and 7 grandchildren.
