Born in Engelhard on October 17, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Solomon and Patsy Stowe Marshall. She was the widow of Royden Samuel Neal, Sr. who died in 1985. Mrs. Neal was an active member of Engelhard United Methodist Church. Surviving are a son, Royden S. "Pete" Neal, Jr. of Engelhard; two daughters: Patty N. Jones of Richmond, Va. and Mary Margaret N. Gill of Swan Quarter; a brother, Sam S. Marshall of Engelhard; three sisters: Edla M. Shaffer and Sarah Elizabeth M. Cahoon of Engelhard, and Calla M. Bonner of Greenville; and 6 grandchildren. Mrs. Neal was preceded in death by brothers, William A. Marshall and Charles Marshall; sisters: Thelma M. Hunter, Annie Blanche Marshall, Alice Marshall and Patty Todd Marshall; half-brothers: John Anson Marshall, Lloyd Marshall, Fred Marshall, and Linwood Marshall; and half-sister, Mary M. Patrick. A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, at the family plot in Fulford Cemetery. The Rev. L.R. Sparrow and Scott Sukeforth will officiate. Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service in Swan Quarter. NEAL, 62, of Route 1, Engelhard, died Oct. 17 in Pungo District Hospital, Belhaven. Born in Hyde County, October 4, 1932, he was the, son of the late Artis Jackson and Claudia Mooney Neal. He was a retired commercial fisherman. Surviving are two brothers, J.B. Neal of the home and Ted D. Neal of Engelhard; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Neal was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth N. Ireland and Mrs. Claudia N. Barber. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the family plot in Fulford Cemetery. Rev. Phillip Knott officiated. The family is receiving friends at the home. Arrangements were by Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter. NEAL, prominent 75 year old resident of Engelhard, were conducted at the home Wednesday afternoon by Rev. Horace G. Thompson of Colerain. Mr. Neal died at 10:38 a.m. Monday in Albemarle Hospital following a long illness. He was a retired businessman and was the son of the late J. Gray Neal and Julia Gibbs Neal of Engelhard. His wife, the former Retta McGraff of Salisbury, Maryland, survives. Other survivors include one son, Royden S. Neal of Engelhard; 2 grandchildren: Pattie and Pete Neal; one brother, Luke M. Neal of Engelhard; two sisters: Belle Neal of Engelhard and Mrs. John M. Spencer of Wilmington, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. NEAL, 77, who died Thursday, March 11, in a Lumberton hospital, were conducted Saturday afternoon at the graveside in the family cemetery near Engelhard in Hyde County, by the Rev. Walter Armstrong. He was the son of Frank F. and Sue Gibbs Neal and a member of the Pleasant Grove Church of Christ. Surviving are a niece, Mrs. Lelia Petterson of Currituck and a brother-in-law, J.W. Gibbs of Columbia. (The Coastland Times - Friday, March 19, 1954; pg. 10) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ NEWTON, Henrietta M. NORFOLK - Mrs. Henrietta M. NEWTON, 66, of the 6900 block of Pugh St. died June 21, 1997 in DePaul Medical Center. A native of Swan Quarter, N.C., and the daughter of the late James and Julia Holloway Whitney, she was a retired seamstress, formerly of Fines Men's Shop. She was a member of Second Calvary Baptist Church and had been a devoted member of the church for more than 40 years. She was the widow of James H. Newton. She is survived by two sons: James T. Newton and Ronney R. Newton; three sisters, Gertrude Kenlaw of Washington, N.C., Marjorie Tilley of Norfolk and Willa Collins of Norfolk; three brothers: Johnny Holloway of Swan Quarter, Richard Holloway and Clifton Holloway of Norfolk; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a devoted daughter-in-law, Burnette M. Newton. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Second Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Geoffrey V. Guns. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. The family will receive friends in Riddick Funeral Service from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Friday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Henrietta Newton at 2730 Ellsmere Ave., Norfolk, 23502. (Virginian-Pilot - Tuesday, June 24, 1997; pg. 6B) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ NIXON, Dalbro Russell ENGELHARD - Dalbro Russell NIXON, 67, of Engelhard, died in a West Palm Beach Hospital December 8th, his 67th birthday. He had been suffering from a heart aliment several months. A native of Stumpy Point, he was the son of Mrs. Betty Hooper Nixon and the late Samuel Spencer Nixon of Engelhard. He was a World War I veteran, a member of the Presbyterian Church in Islip, N.Y., and attended St. George's Presbyterian Church in Engelhard. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Manteo. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Effie Ecclesbon Nixon of Islip, N.Y; a son, Maj. D.R. Nixon, Jr. of Norfolk, Va.; 2 grandchildren: Joan and Johnny Nixon; his mother, Mrs. Bettie Nixon of Stumpy Point; one brother, Rosser Nixon of Manteo; two sisters: Mrs. Belle Payne of Stumpy Point and Mrs. Ruth Maness of Fayetteville. The funeral was held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home in Norfolk by the Rev. Douglas G. Ebert, pastor of Foundry Methodist Church of Norfolk, and the Rev. M.W. Maness, pastor of Camp Ground Methodist Church in Fayetteville. Burial followed in the National Cemetery in Hampton, Va. with military honors. Pallbearers were Dwight Hooper, L.W. Hooper, and Dr. W.O. Payne, of Norfolk, Linwood and Leland Wise of Elizabeth City and Stumpy Point, and Robert Midgette of Stumpy Point. NIXON, 99, of Amulet Dr. and a long time resident of Manteo, died April 26 in Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne. She was born in Engelhard, Hyde County, daughter of the late William and Sally Midgett. She was the widow of Rosser Nixon, a WW I veteran who died in 1973. Mrs. Nixon was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Manteo where she was active in the Women's group. Surviving are one daughter, Rennie Nixon Kory of Ft. Wayne; three sisters: JeanWise of Winston-Salem, Bertie Mellish of Orlando, Florida, and Irene Olson of San Diego, California; 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. A son, Howard W. Nixon, died in 1986. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Bundy, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Manteo Cemetery. Twiford's Colony Chapel in Manteo has charge of arrangements. NIXON, 63, husband of Mrs. Laura Spencer Nixon of Norview, died Friday, January 8th at the United States Public Health Center Service Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland after an illness of one year. Prior to moving to Norfolk he had lived many years at Stumpy Point where he engaged in fishing. A native of Engelhard, N.C., he had resided in Norfolk 12 years. He was a son of the late William and Mrs. Minerva McKinney Nixon. Besides his wife, surviving are three sons: R.M. Nixon, USN, W.M. Nixon, USCG, and B.B. Nixon of South Norfolk; three daughters: Mrs. Beatrice Cheek of Norview, Mrs. Edna Bernick and Mrs. Exie Russell, both of Norfolk; one sister, Mrs. Mae Zabawa of Petersburg, Michigan; 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Miss Noble was born in Norfolk. She was a member of Lyndale Church of Christ. Survivors include a daughter, Sandra K. Powell of Texas; her mother, Mary Frances C. Noble, and a sister, Jean Null, both of Chesapeake; four brothers: Bennie L. Noble, Rolland D. Noble and Bill Null, all of Chesapeake, and Prinnes E. Noble of Mobile, Ala.; and a grandchild. The funeral will be conducted at 8:30 p.m. Sunday in Twiford Colonial Chapel, Great Bridge, by the Rev. David Vaughan. The graveside service will be at 1 p.m Monday in Mount Olive Church of Christ Cemetery, Hyde County, N.C. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home and other times at 1901 Spoonbill Court. Mrs. Norman was born in Engelhard, N.C. She was a member of Creswell United Methodist Church and was the widow of Henderson A. Norman. Survivors include a son, Edwin A. Norman of Plymouth; a sister, Evelyn S. Carter of Dozier, Ala.; and two grandsons, Robert A. Norman of Kitty Hawk and Christopher A. Norman of Greenville. The graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Azalea Memorial Gardens Cemetery by the Rev. Paul T. Stallsworth. Horner-Walker Funeral Home is handling arrangements. A graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Sunday by the Rev. Larry Davis in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
