She was 85. Born in Engelhard on July 13, 1910, she drove to San Diego from Baltimore, Maryland in 1944 with her sister, Bertie Mellish and Bertie's three children, Barbara, Pat, and Party [should be Marty]. Her brother-in-law, Martin, was at sea in the Asian-Pacific. William Wise, her sister Jean's son, followed later that year and shared an apartment with them. Irene became part of the civilian war effort during WW II. She met William A. Olsen, Jr. at SDG&E and they were married in 1949. They both retired from SDG&E. Irene was preceded in death by William "Uncle Billie" in 1991. Although "Auntie Rene" had no children of her own, she loved babies. A donation to a children's fund in her memory is suggested. Graveside services were held Thursday, November 30, at Glen Abbey Memorial Park in San Diego, California. Mrs. O'Neal was born in Hyde County, daughter of the late John and Alice Lupton Carawan. She was the widow of Walter Miller O'Neal. She was a member of Belhaven Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons: Walter Miller O'Neal, Jr. of Belhaven and Lewis Alson O'Neal of Ajo, Arizona; two daughters: Rilma O'Neal Benson of Fredericksburg, Va. and Myra O'Neal Holton of Huntsville, Ala.; two brothers: John Carawan and Charlie Carawan of Scranton; four sisters: Olive Parkin, Alice Smith, and Rachel Holt of Raleigh and Ina Sanders of Eutaville, S.C.; and 11 grandchildren. Funeral services were held August 8 at Paul Funeral Home in Belhaven with the Revs. David Brooks and W.L. Brickhouse officiating. Entombment was in the Belhaven Community Cemetery. Memorial may be given to the Belhaven Rescue Squad or the Belhaven Free Will Baptist Chruch. He was a native of Ocracoke, son of the late Isaac and Helen Williams O'Neal and the husband of the late Louise Gutt O'Neal. Mr. O'Neal was retired from the U.S. Navy yard in Philadelphia, Pa. and was an Army veteran of WW I and was a Methodist. Surviving are a daughter, Arlene H. O'Neal; a son, Earl W. O'Neal, Jr.; and a sister, Elizabeth O. Howard, all of Ocracoke; 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Thursday, March 26, at 2:00 p.m. by Rev. Clyde Denny. The family will be at the home of Earl W. O'Neal, Jr., Ocracoke. Mrs. O'Neal was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church. She was the wife of Carlton Boyce O'Neal of Ocracoke. Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons" Charles L. O'Neal of Florida, Franklin D. O'Neal and Lewis F. O'Neal, both of Ocracoke; two sisters: and one brother [not named]. A funeral service will be held Sunday, January 19, at 2:30 p.m. at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church with the Rev. Allen Lovell officiating. Mr. O'Neal was born in Hyde County, N.C. and was a Baptist. He had retired after 20 years and was a member of International Longshoreman's Association, Local 1248. Survivors include three sisters, Mary Tarrant of Baltimore, Lula Mae Spencer of Pantego, N.C., and Ruth Smooch of Washington, D.C.; and a brother, Willie O'Neal of Pantego. The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday in Hale Funeral Home by the Rev. J.L. Kearney. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Friends may join the family at the residence. She was united in marriage to Ivey O'Neal on the 18th day of June 1922. Two boys were born in the family, John Thomas O'Neal and Steve Monroe O'Neal, both of Ocracoke. After a lingering illness of some months, she passed peacefully away on Friday, January 23 at 2:45 a.m. She was a consecrated Christian, with faithful attendance at all our church services and a loyal supporter of the church. Funeral services were held at the Assembly of God Church on Friday at 2 p.m. Pallbearers were Monford Garrish, Pinta Williams, Junius Austin, C.R. Mason, Marvin Howard, Henry Peele, John Gaskill, and Clyde Farrow. Burial was in the family cemetery. Left to mourn her departure in addition to the two sons, are four brothers: Jamie, Elijah, Benjamin and Steve Styron; three sisters: Emma O'Neal, Zilphia Williams and Elizabeth Meyers, all of Ocracoke. Mrs. O'Neal was born in Ocracoke and was a retired cook. She was a member of the Ocracoke Assembly of God, where she was the former secretary/treasurer. Mrs. O'Neal was the daughter of the late Elijah and Estelle O'Neal Styron and was the widow of Steve Monroe O'Neal. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 13, at 2 p.m. at the Ocracoke Assembly of God with the Rev. Charles Etheridge and the Rev. Keith Sykes officiating. (The Coastland Times - Tuesday, May 12, 1998) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ O'NEAL, Isaac Willis OCRACOKE - Isaac Willis O'NEAL, age 89, died at his home here Saturday night, September 18th. Popularly known among his relatives and friends as "Big Ike O'Neal", he was the Island's oldest citizen and the one who knew the most about Ocracoke's past. He was born here on July 31, 1865, son of Willis and Elizabeth O'Neal. In 1889 he married Helen Williams who survives him. In his youth he served for 12 years with the Ocracoke Life Saving Station; later for many years he was a well-known merchant, operating one of the Island's stores. Mr. O'Neal was a charter member of the Masonic Order #245 of Swan Quarter. Funeral services were held in the home with Rev. Robert L. Vickery, Jr. officiating. Interment was in the old O'Neal graveyard. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Howard of Ocracoke; two sons: Horatio Willis O'Neal of Washington, D.C. and Earl Williams O'Neal of Philadelphia, Pa.; and 3 grandchildren. O'NEAL, age 85, died at her home here on Wednesday, October 27th, following a stroke of paralysis. "Aunt Helen" was granted a long-time wish to survive her husband, "Big Ike" O'Neal. She died just about one month after his death. She was the daughter of Horatio and Martha Williams and had spent her entire life at Ocracoke. Funeral services were conducted by Theodore Rondthalor in the absence of her pastor. Burial was in the old family graveyard. Surviving are two sons: Horatio of Washington, D.C. and Earl of Philadelphia; a daughter, Mrs. R. Wahab Howard of Ocracoke; and 3 grandchildren. Mr. O'Neal, a native of Ocracoke, was a supervisor with the N.C. DOT and a member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church. He was the son of Essie May Parson O'Neal of Ocracoke and the late Harry W. O'Neal. He was the husband of Helen Evans O'Neal of the home. Besides his wife and mother, Mr. O'Neal is survived by two daughters: Diana Edman and Helen Anna Zito, both of Ocracoke; one son, James Elvin O'Neal, Jr. of Ocracoke; nine brothers: Harry F. O'Neal, Carlton Boyce O'Neal, Reginald O'Neal, Walton Leroy O'Neal, Hubert Forest O'Neal, and Rex Beach O'Neal, all of Ocracoke, Richard Charles O'Neal of Hertford, George Lewis O'Neal of Bayboro, and Jimmy Wilart O'Neal.; and 5 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Friday, May 9, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Alan Lovell officiating. Medical Center, Hampton, Va. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. O'Neal was survived by his son, John F. O'Neal, Jr. of Ocracoke. Services are being handled by John F. O'Neal, Jr. (The Coastland Times - Thursday, September 22, 1994) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ O'NEAL, Lt. Col. Joseph OCRACOKE, Feb. 19 - Lt. Col. Joseph O'NEAL, age 59, a native of Ocracoke, died on February 14th at his home in Beverly, New Jersey after an illness of several weeks. Mr. O'Neal was the son of the late Martha and Thomas O'Neal. He left home at the age of 16 and served as a deckhand with the late Capt. Stacy Simpson, also of Ocracoke, who was Master of a hydraulic dredge. Later Mr. O'Neal shipped out on a sea-going hopper dredge, the "Manhattan", of Philadelphia. He worked on up to 2nd officer to Chief Mate, serving all along the Atlantic Coast and then with Capt. Marvin W. Howard, in Texas waters. He was commissioned at the beginning of World War II in the U.S. Army as Major and took command of the U.S. sea-going dredge "Russell", operating in European waters. In England he joined his lifelong friend, Lt. Col. Marvin W. Howard, commanding the sea-going dredge "Chester Harding". At the end of World War II, Lt. Col. O'Neal retired on disability from which he never fully recovered. At that time he was a Master from Civil Service with the Army Engineers. At the time of his death he was serving as building inspector in Beverly, New Jersey. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Delia Williams O'Neal, sister to Mrs. Irene O'Neal and Mrs. Leevella Howard; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Clair; and 2 granddaughters, all of New Jersey; and by a sister, Mrs. Lorena Congleton of Beaufort. (The Coastland Times - February 23, 1963) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ O'NEAL, Joseph Allen SWAN QUARTER - Funeral services for Joseph Allen O'NEAL, 19, of Route 1, who died late Friday night, August 3, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident, were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the family plot at Fairfield Cemetery. Rev. John Rowland, pastor of Swan Quarter Baptist Church, officiated. O'Neal was the son of Larry Allen and Dorothy Owens O'Neal of Swan Quarter. He was a graduate of Mattamuskeet High School and was to begin his second year at East Carolina University later this month. Surviving in addition to his parents, are his paternal grandmother, Audrey Brooks of Swan Quarter; a brother, Carlos O'Neal of the home; and a sister, Judy Kinnerman of Fruitland, Md. A native of Belhaven, he had made his home in South Norfolk for 12 years. His late parents were David G. and Mrs. Nancy Williams O'Neal. He was a member of the Mount Olive Church of Christ at Ponzer. Surviving are his foster father, J.M. Ainsley of Ponzer; his wife, Mrs. Ethel Marie Woff O'Neal; two daughters: Mary Frances and Wanda Marie O'Neal; and one son, Warren Lee O'Neal, all of South Norfolk; two sisters: Mrs. E.R. She was the daughter of the late John P. and Alice Benson Midgette and the widow of Herbert Joseph O'Neal. She is survived by three daughters: Katie Griffin of Williamston, Elizabeth Zeigler and husband Don of Kitty Hawk, and Ruby O'Neal of Kitty Hawk; four sisters: Louise Knickerbocker and Annie Pearl Payne of Portsmouth, Va., Addie Lee McKinney and Sheila Gubbs, both of Engelhard; 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grand- children. Gaskill, 82 years of age. Ben O'Neal, as he was called by all, was born and raised here. He served during World War I. He had been hospitalized and in ill health for several months. He is survived by his wife, Fannie Williams O'Neal; a daughter, Mrs. Gabriella Smith; three sons: John, Fowler and Ronald; three sisters: Gabriella Roberts of Fairfield, Eleanor Ballance and Tressie Howard of Ocracoke; and four brothers: John, Willis, and Walter (only 3 named). Funeral services were held at the home at 5 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Ernest Powlesland of the Assembly of God officiating. On Sunday morning at 10 a.m. Rev. Powlesland conducted services at the Methodist Church for Ben Gaskill. He had been a member of the church for 47 years. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Ellen Gaskill; five sons: Enoch of Madison, Owen, Clinton, Wilbur and Christopher, all of Ocracoke; one brother: J. Lum Gaskill; one sister: Mrs. Sue Scarborough of Ocracoke. Both of the deceased were buried in the Ocracoke cemetery. Martin St., died March 29, in Engelhard. Mrs. O'Neal was born in Currituck County, daughter of the late Dempsey and Gracie Forehand Ballance. She was a former resident of Kitty Hawk and had lived in Elizabeth City for the past 15 years. She was a former substitute mail carrier in Kitty Hawk and was a saleswoman for Ownley Grocery Store. She was a member of the Senior Citizens Organization and Order of the Eastern Star, Elizabeth City Chapter #44 and was a Baptist. She was the widow of George D. O'Neal of Engelhard. Survivors include a son, George W. O'Neal of Engelhard; 2 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was born in Hyde County January 29, 1872, son of the late Matthew and Mary Clark O'Neal. He was a retired farmer and fisherman and had moved from Engelhard to Washington. He was a member of the Engelhard Christian Church. He was married to the former Ellen Sadler of Hyde County who survives. Other survivors are one son, Will O'Neal of Washington; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Alice Sadler of Washington. Funeral services were held from the Washington Church of God on Saturday at 3 p.m., conducted by the pastor, Rev. S.W. Avery. Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery. A native of Hyde County, he was the son of Lillian Swindell O'Neal of Swan Quarter and the late Lonnie O'Neal. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during World War II, a member of the Swan Quarter Baptist Church, Atlantic Lodge #294 AF&AM, York Rite Masonic Bodies, and Sudan Temple. Funeral services were held Wednesday in Swan Quarter Baptist Church. The Rev. John Rowland, pastor, officiated. Burial will follow in Soule Cemetery with Masonic Rites conducted by Atlantic Lodge #294. He is survived by his wife, Jean Wheeler O'Neal; his mother; a daughter, Alison O. Mr. O'Neal was retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation as supervisor of Cedar Island Ferry. He was a World War II veteran, member of Ocracoke Masonic Lodge #747 and a Shriner of the Sudan Temple in New Bern, a member of Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion, and member of Ocracoke United Methodist Church. He was owner/operator of Bluff Shoal Motel. Surviving are his wife, Bertha O'Neal; a daughter, Christine O'Neal; a son, Ronnie Van O'Neal, all of Ocracoke; a sister, Louie Dell Williams of Hendersonville, Tennessee; 2 grandchildren and 1 great- grandchild. Mrs. O'Neal was born December 25, 1905 in Scranton, the daughter of the late Dare Alcock and J.M. Jennette. In August 1922 in Hyde County, she married John Bryan O'Neal, who preceded her in death in 1980. For many years Mrs. O'Neal attended North Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons: Grady Max O'Neal of Oriental and Glenn Bryant O'Neal of Winterville; a daughter, Gretchen O'Neal Cochran of Greenville; a brother, Garland jennette of Swan Quarter; 6 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A native of Ocracoke, he was a member of Ocracoke United Methodist Church. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Louie Dell O'Neal Williams of Ocracoke; two sons: Van Henry O'Neal of Ocracoke and Walter C. Mr. O'Neal was retired from General Motors Corp. as a paint foreman. He was also the owner of the Trolley Shop One and O'Neal's Dockside Tackle Shop of Ocracoke. He attended Ocracoke United Methodist Church and Ocracoke Assembly of God and was the chairperson for the Ocracoke Surf Fishing Tournament. He was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army in WW II. He was born in Union City, N.J., son of the late Margaret Styron O'Neal. Surviving are his wife, Dorothea Draper O'Neal of the home; two sons: William Curtis O'Neal of Tampa, Fla. And Charles T. O'Neal, Sr. of Ocracoke; two sisters: Kay O'Neal of Wilmington, Delaware and Norma Drozdowski of Stanton, Delaware; four brothers: LeRoy O'Neal of New Castle, Delaware, Ralph O'Neal of Chesapeake, Va., Thurman O'Neal of Ocracoke, and Harry O'Neal of Elsmere, Delaware; 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Julien B. O'Neal. Funeral services will be held at the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Tuesday, April 30, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. J. Allen Lovell and the Rev. Tim Lynch officiating. Burial will be in the Ocracoke Community Cemetery. Twiford's Island Chapel in Hatteras is in charge of arrangements. (The Coastland Times - Tuesday, April 30, 1996) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ OSBORNE, Mary Lucille Cox ENGELHARD - Mary Lucille Cox OSBORNE, 88, of Goshen Road and most recently a patient at Cross Creek Health Care Center in Swan Quarter, died early Wednesday at Cross Creek. Born in Hyde County, April 30, 1910, she was the daughter of the late James Monroe and Lillie Swindell Cox. She was a member of the Middletown Christian Church and was the widow of Jack Osborne who died in 1986. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Middletown Christian Church with Scott Sukeforth officiating. Private burial will follow in Soule Cemetery in Swan Quarter with Jessie Rawls, Richard Cox, Joe Redden Cox, Maxwell Cox, Douglas Cox and Clifford Swindell serving as pallbearers. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Norma S. Lupton and Dr. C. Rhodes of Middletown; a sister, Margie Cox Scott of Wilkesboro; 2 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Osborne was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph W. Cox in June 1997. Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service in Swan Quarter. HYDE HUNTER SUFFERS FATAL HEART ATTACK - A sudden heart attack snuffed out the life of a goose hunter in a blind near Fairfield last Wednesday morning. The victim was M/Sgt. Fleet L. OSWALT, a retired Marine living in Newport. His death occurred in a blind on the farm of A.G. Berry. The body of the 48 year old man was returned to Newport where funeral services were held Saturday. CURRITUCK NATIVE DIES IN NORFOLK - Joseph B. OWENS, age 67, resident of Washington, N.C., died in the Marine hospital in Norfolk on July 16 following a critical illness of several days. He had been in failing health for the past year. Mr. Owens was born in Currituck County December 16, 1891, son of the late Jordan and Penelope Owens. He was a retired Coast Guardsman and had been living in Washington since 1945. He was married to the former Della Dunbar of Hyde County who survives. Other survivors are one son, Marvin Owens, warrant officer in the U.S. Army at Fort Campbell, Ky.; two step-sons: Joseph and John Liverman, both of Baltimore, Md.; one step-daughter, Mrs. Malcolm S. Simmons of Belhaven; 3 grandchildren and 5 step-grandchildren; and two sisters (not named). Funeral services were held at the chapel of the Paul Funeral Home in Washington on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Earle J. Rogers, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery. Nephews served as pallbearers.
