Ms. Paas is survived by her companion and associate for 15 years, Martha Clayton Cottrell, M.D. She is also survived by her mother and father, Mr. & Mrs. Walter H. Paas of Portage, Indiana; two brothers: Walter Paas of Chicago, Illinois and Alan Paas of Seattle, Washington. Ms. Paas spent her professional life as health services manager at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and was a professional associate of Dr. Cottrell in her private practice in New York City. She was an accomplished flutist, studied in Chicago and Vienna, Austria, was a graduate of Swedish Institute of Therapeutic Massage in New York and a prominent voice well known in the Macrobiotics community. Ms. Paas was project coordinator for the AIDS research conducted through Boston University in coordination with the Jushi Foundation in Boston, Mass. The project advanced our knowledge in understanding the benefits of Macrobiotics in regards to the management of AIDS. Through her work with those facing life-threatening disease, Cynthia touched many lives as a capable, caring and compassionate therapist. She will be sorely missed by her many friends around the world. A memorial service will be held at a time to be announced at the New York-Manhattan Center For the Living, 704 Broadway, New York, N.Y. Mrs. Pardue, a native of Hyde County, N.C., was a member of Kitty Hawk Baptist Church and Roanoke Island Eastern Star 79. She was the widow of John William Pardue. Survivors include a sister, Allie M. Mason of Chesapeake; and a brother, Roland L. Midgette of Norfolk. The graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Westlawn Memorial Park, Elizabeth City, by the Rev. Bill Creef. Born in Hyde County on February 16, 1908, she was the daughter of the late John Franklin and Della Rose Cahoon. She was the widow of John Lindsey Parrish, Jr. who died February 7, 1986. Surviving are a son, Sam Long Cuthrell and his wife Lessie of Engelhard; four grandchildren: Diane Brauer, Rita Berry, Angela Marshall and Rusty Cuthrell; six great-grandchildren: Samuel Brauer, Eric Brauer, Andrew Berry, Stephen Berry, Allen Berry and Brice Marshall; and a great-great-grandchild, Mary Brauer. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the gravesite in Soule Cemetery. The Rev. L. Ray Sparrow and Scott Sukeforth officiated. Arrangements were by Bryan Funeral Service in Swan Quarter. Born in Swan Quarter, she was the daughter of the late Ridick Gatlin and Ruth Overton Bridgman. She was the widow of John H. Patrick of Engelhard. She was educated in Swan Quarter High School and East Carolina Teacher's College (now East Carolina University). She was a public school teacher. She operated a store following her husband's death. An active Methodist, she was a member of Engelhard United Methodist Church where she served as president of the United Methodist Women for 4 years, as district officer of the UMW and taught an adult Sunday School class. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, a former Worthy Matron and was also a member of Lake Landing Homemakers Club. In 1983 she moved to Winston-Salem and resided at Salemtowne (Moravian Retirement Community) and was a member of Marvin United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. Surviving are a daughter, Justine Patrick Linville of Winston-Salem; a sister, Mattie B. Flowers of Swan Quarter; 3 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. PAUL, 85, died Tuesday, August 18, at Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville. He is survived by his sons: Callas W. Hunnings of Swan Quarter, James C. Paul of Washington, and Terry L. Paul of Avon; daughters: Rita Corbin of Swansboro and V. Louise Midgett of Ocracoke; one sister, Lillian Scott of Grantsboro; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Crank of South Norfolk, Va., after an illness of one month. A native of Engelhard, she lived most of her life at Stumpy Point. She was the daughter of Richard and Mrs. Anna Neal Brinn and the widow of Hyman G. Payne. She was a member of Stumpy Point Methodist Church. Besides her daughter, surviving are two sons: Gaskill H. Payne of South Norfolk, and Ira O. Payne of Stumpy Point; two brothers: Miriam Brinn of Florida and Mack Brinn of Portsmouth; 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Front St., a retired utilities commission inspector, died Jan. 29, 1992, in his home. Mr. Payne was born in Hyde County. He had been a North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper and an officer with the Department of Motor Vehicles. He was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Perquimans Masonic Lodge 106, New Bern Scottish Rite Bodies, Sudan Shrine Temple and the Hertford Rotary Club. He was the widower of Claire Cely Payne. Survivors include a sister, Hazel P. Martin, and a brother, Hugh B. Payne, both of Williamston. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church by the Rev. W.I. Wolverton and the Rev. Ray Wittman. Burial will be in the church cemetery. He was first married to Sudie Payne. By this marriage there were two daughters: Mrs. Lillian Spencer of Fairfield and Mrs. Edith Aaron of Newport, Rhode Island; and two sons, Spencer of Plymouth and J.H. of Norfolk. His second marriage was to Sally Mooney Payne. From this marriage there were three children: Patricia, Beadie and Steve Payne, all of the home. Born in Fairfield Township, she was the daughter of the late William and Clara Williams Mooney. She was the widow of Oscar Payne who died in 1960. Mrs. Payne was a long time member of Pleasant Grove Church of Christ and was also active in the Ladies Aid. Surviving are a son, Steve S. Payne of Rt. 1, Fairfield; two daughters: Patricia P. Gibbs of Rt. 1, Fairfield and Beadie P. Gibbs of Engelhard; a brother, Golden Mooney of Rt. 1 Fairfield; three sisters: Sarah M. Stotesbury and Mattie M. Payne, both of Plymouth and Gladys M. Berry of Gum Neck; 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Payne was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Mooney and Jim Mooney. Mrs. Perry was born in Hyde County. She lived her entire life in North Carolina. She was a member of Edenton First Assembly of God and was a homemaker. She was the widow of Lindon Cahoon who passed away in 1960, and Jesse Perry who passed away in 1986, whom she married at age 70 after 14 years of widowhood. Her eldest daughter, Thelma Cahoon Hudson, is now deceased. Survivors include her daughter, Margie C. Carraway of Chesapeake; two grandsons: Linwood Hudson and John Carraway; 2 great-grandchildren; a niece, Nancy Brickhouse; a nephew, Audrey Ballance, whom she raised for a time in her home; a half-sister, Cora Chessom of Plymouth; a step-daughter [not named]; and a multitude of adoring friends who will miss her terribly. A native of Hyde County, she was the daughter of the late Dr. James E. and Mary Elizabeth Windley Mann. She was the widow of Edward Burwell Petersen. Mrs. Mann was a graduate of the Hyde County Schools and East Carolina Teacher's College (now East Carolina University). She taught many years in Fayetteville, New Bern and retired in Hyde County after having taught for many years at Davis School in Engelhard. Surviving are a son, Edward Burwell "Pete" Petersen, Jr. of Durham; a daughter, Lois P. Hodgson of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three sisters: Mary M. O'Neal, Katie M. Wade, and Lois M. Gibbs, all of Springmoor Retirement Center, Raleigh; two half-sisters: Kay Anthony of Hobgood and Carrie Mae Collier of Garner; 5 grandchildren. Mrs. Peyton was born in Ocracoke. She was a school teacher and homemaker and a member of the Ocracoke United Methodist Church. She was the daughter of the late Horatio Jones and Virginia O'Neal Williams and the widow of James Robert Peyton. She is survived by two sisters: Carrie Chisholm and Eleanora Hamilton, both of Ocracoke; and several nieces and nephews. Born in Hyde County on July 8, 1942, he was the son of the late Seth Ceymore and Gaybelle Marie Franks Potter. Mr. Potter was a retired farmer, an avid sportsman and hunter. He was also supportive of the Hyde County midget football league. He was preceded in death by two sisters: Norma P. Ballance and Arlene P. Griffith. Surviving are his wife, Betty Sanders Potter; a son, Kenny W. Potter of Swan Quarter; two daughters: Debbie P. Cahoon of Swan Quarter and Laurie A. Potter of Winterville; six sisters: Jeannine P. Ballance and Gaynelle P. Simmons of Fairfield, Sandra P. Bryan of Alexandria, Va., Lorraine P. Yates and Azalea P. Mitchell of Cartersville, Va., and Sharon P. (Virginian-Pilot - Wednesday, February 12, 1992; pg. 2D) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ PUGH, Earl Dawson, Sr. ENGELHARD - Earl Dawson PUGH, Sr., 87, of the Nebraska community, Route 1, Engelhard, died November 10 in Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville. A life-long Hyde County resident, Mr. Pugh was born in the Gulrock community, son of the late Joseph Madison and Amanda Payne Pugh. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1945, during which time he served for 16 months on the USS Missouri and witnessed the signing of the peace treaty with Japan in Tokyo Bay on September 6, 1945. He also served in Georgetown and Charleston, S.C. and Southport. He and his wife operated the Virginia Pugh General Store in the Nebraska community for 29 years. He was an active community and public servant having served on the Hyde County Board of Education from 1965-1980, on the board of Social Services for many years, and was active in the Engelhard Rotary Club and named a Paul Harris fellow. He was also a member of American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of Watson's Chapel United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer for 30 years. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Mooney Pugh; his son and daughter-in-law, Earl Dawson Pugh, Jr. and Dianne H. Pugh; three brothers: Leonard T. Pugh of Gulrock, James A. Pugh of Nebraska and Joseph Pugh of Gulrock; two sisters Irene P. Sadler of Swan Quarter and Essie P. Webster of Pinetown; and 2 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Pugh, January 11, 1983. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the gravesite at the Pugh-Mooney plot in Soule Cemetery, Swan Quarter. The Rev. Born in the Gull Rock Community, Oct. 4, 1917, he was the son of the late Joseph Madison and Amanda Payne Pugh. He lived and worked in Norfolk for many years and returned to Hyde County in 1978. He was an automotive mechanic from 1942 until 1946; he worked at the Naval Air Station until 1978 and retired as an inspector. He was a member of the Engelhard Chapter of American Legion, Rotary International and Knights of Pythias, Norfolk Lodge 106 and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church at Gull Rock. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. He was married to the late Margaret Knickerbocker Pugh, who died in 1987. Surviving are two brothers, Leonard T. Pugh and Joseph Pugh, both of the Gull Rock Community, Route 1, Engelhard; two sisters, Irene P. Sadler of Swan Quarter and Essie P. Webster of Pinetown; and 10 nieces and nephews. Born in Belhaven, he was the son of the late Samuel Leroy and Bertha Armitte Keech Pugh. He spent 10 years with Cecil Hudson ESSO Service in Chesapeake, Va.; 15 years with the Chesapeake Police Department; 10 years with Volvo of America; and five years with Hyde County Sheriff's Department until he retired earlier this year due to his health. He was a long time member of the Virginia Police Association. He was a member of Mt. Olive Church of Christ. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Davis Pugh; two sons: Richard Wayne Pugh, Jr. and Darrell Ray Pugh of the home; three sisters: Edna White, Erma Ray Wilkins and Mary Elizabeth Rose, all of Belhaven. For many years he was in business at Last Chance, and resided in this section of Hyde County. He is survived by five sons (not named); one brother, Joe Pugh of Gulrock; five sisters: Mrs. E.T. Cutrell and Mrs. Charlie Haynes of Lake Landing, Mrs. Lida Payne and Mrs. Agness Gibbs of Elizabeth City, and Mrs. G.C. Cutrell of Middletown. Born in Gull Rock on June 11, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Tarkington and Emma Amanda Midyette O'Neal. She was the widow of Alfred Jackson Pugh. She had been a member of the Bethany Methodist Church since the age of 8, and was long active in the United Methodist Women. She was always active in community affairs. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the family plot in Brooks Cemetery at Gull Rock with Rev. L.R. Sparrow and Raffael Farrow, Jr. officiating. Serving as pallbearers were Keith Weatherly, Cleron Carawan, Benjie Carawan, Stevie Cutrell, Brandon Cutrell, and Chad Marshall. Surviving are two daughters: Hilda P. Brown of Swan Quarter and Gertrude P. Carawan of Gull Rock; 6 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Arrangements were by Bryan Funeral Service in Swan Quarter.
