Born in Newport News, Va., she was the daughter of Robert Epes and Elizabeth Burrus Tucker of Route 1, Engelhard. She was the widow of Walter Francis Raczenski. Mrs. Raczenski worked many years as a secretary. Surviving in addition to her parents are: a daughter, Jean Marie Raczenski of Engelhard; two sons: Walter Francis Raczenski, Jr. of the home and Raymond Raczenski of Engelhard; two sisters: Betty Tucker Ballance of Engelhard and Lillian Tucker Grisham of Woodford, Va. Funeral services will be held at, 11 a.m. Thursday in St. George's Episcopal Church, Lake Landing. The Rev. Hilary West and the Rev. Tom Supplee will officiate. Burial will follow in Burrus Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Ballance, Route 1, Engelhard. Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral service, Swan Quarter, where the body will lie in state until 9 a.m. Thursday. (The Coastland Times - Thursday, March 9, 1995) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ RAMON, Edward Charles ENGELHARD - Edward Charles RAMON, 79, of Route 1 Engelhard, died August 1 at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven. Born in Biloxi, Miss., he was the son of the late Harry Anton and Dorothy Buckman Ramon. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served for 28 years, attaining the rank of sergeant major and later retired in reserve rank. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, served in the 755th Railway Shop Battalion, which served in England, France and Belgium. In the Korean War, he served at Panmunjom, Korea with armistice affairs division, served as train commander, 1951-52 between Vienna and Salzberg, Austria and during periods prior his service and between service periods worked with the Pullman Company. He was active in several military organizations among which are included Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Association of U.S. Army, Retired Officers Association, Railway Service Veterans and a sponsor of U.S.O. and Army Emergency Relief. He was also a member of Engelhard Rotary Club of which he was a former president. Surviving are his wife, Christine Fulford Ramon; a daughter and son-in-law, Rosalind R. and Dr. Don M. Heinert of Corry, Pa.; a sister, Dorothy Ramon of New Orleans, La.; four grandchildren: Christina Heinert, Eric Heinert, Anthony Heinert and Brett Heinert, all of Corry, Pa.; a nephew, a niece, and two great-nephews. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Amity United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Military honors will be given by the U.S. Army from Fort Bragg. Born in the Edward community of Beaufort County on August 11, 1914, he was the son of the late John Henry and Gertrude White Rhem. He retired in 1980 after working for many years as a merchant seaman with Exxon Oil Co. He was a member of the Mount Olive Church of Christ. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Wallace Rhem; two sons: Larry E. Rhem of Washington and Mike W. Rhem of Belhaven; a daughter, Linda R. Buckner of Kitty Hawk; a sister, Ruth R. Radcliff of Panama City, Fla.; and 3 grandchildren. Mr. Rhem was preceded in death by brothers, Herbert, Arthur, and Jay Rhem, and sisters, Allie Williams and Lena Lowe. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Olive Church of Christ. Adam Henderson will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Rhodes, a native of Hyde County, N.C., was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II. She was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. She was past president of the North Carolina Extension Homemakers Association and was past worthy matron of Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 281. Survivors include her husband, Royce L. Rhodes; three daughters, Victoria Morton and Rebecca Harris, both of Columbia and Gayle Austin of Dover, Del.; three sons, Albert Rhodes of Elizabeth City, Ryan Rhodes of Atlanta and Bradley Rhodes of Hampton; a brother, Joseph H. Jarvis Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; and 10 grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday in Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Vance Way. Mr. Robinson, a native of Ocracoke, was the son of the late William R. and Helen Spencer Robinson, had retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He was a retired maintenance supervisor, a member of Ocracoke United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge of Hyde County. Survivors include his wife, Helen Garrish Robinson; a son, Kermit Robinson, Jr. of Smyrna; a sister, Delores Tillett of Ocracoke; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday in the Ocracoke United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. Burial was in the Ocracoke Community Cemetery. Twiford's Island Chapel, Hatteras, was in charge. Mrs. Roper was born in Hyde County and was a former resident of Portsmouth. She was the widow of Gilbert A. Roper. She was a member of Eunice Chapel Church of Christ and the Hyde County Senior Citizens Group. Survivors include two daughters, including Angela R. Felton of Chesapeake; a son; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Eunice Chapel Church of Christ by the Revs. Leon Williams and Tommy Glover. Burial will be in Mount Olive Church of Christ Cemetery. ROPER of Engelhard, former county accountant and Clerk of Recorder's Court of Hyde County, who died at Engelhard of a heart attack, were conducted from Amity Methodist Church at Lake Landing Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Lemar Wheeler, Engelhard Baptist minister, who was in charge of the service, was assisted by the Rev. Angus M. Cameron, Methodist minister. Immediately following the service, the body was carried to Pilot Mountain, N.C. for Burial in the Pilot View Cemetery. Mr. Roper succumbed Monday morning at his home shortly after suffering a heart attack. He was 65 at the time of his death and was operating a small store and remnant shop in Engelhard near his home. After having served for more than a year in the county accountant's office, he was elected in 1942 as Clerk of the Recorder's Court and he served in this position for eight years. Born at Engelhard July 5, 1890, he was the son of the late George E. and Sallie Spencer Roper. He was a member of the Swan Quarter Baptist Church, a member of the Mattamuskeet Masonic Lodge, and a veteran of WW I. He was a life-long resident of Hyde County except for about 2 years when he made his home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Roper is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lena McGrath Roper of Engelhard; one daughter, Mrs. Henry Harding of Pilot Mountain; and 1 granddaughter. A native of Hyde County, he was the son of Ira and Gladys McKinney Rose. He was the husband of Ruby Hufton Rose of the home. He was a warehouseman at Cherry Point Marine Base and an Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He was a member of Scuppernong Church Of Christ. Surviving are his wife; two daughters: Brenda Hamilton or Blue Ridge, Va. and Debra Jones of Charlotte; four sisters: Mable Cuthrell of Engelhard, Violet Sawyer and Mary Powell of Belhaven and Iris Furlough of Washington; a brother, Ira "Jake" Rose, Jr. of Washington and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at Scuppernong Church Of Christ Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, Columbia. Mr. Rose was born in Engelhard. He was the son if the late Johnnie and Dezzie Armstrong Rose. He had retired from J.C. Jones Sand Company as a dredger operator. Mr. Rose served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He later worked on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Survivors include his wife Carol Rose; five daughters: Rose Marie Bunch of Elizabeth City, Annie Lee Brickhouse of Columbia, Patsy Weeks of Elizabeth City, Regina Kraemer of Chesapeake, Va., and Marilyn Simpson of Virginia Beach; two sons: Edward Dean Rose of Decatur, Ala., and Fred Edward Rose, Jr. of Virginia Beach; four sisters: Rosalee Patrick and Dezzie Rose, both of Washington, Gretchel Sawyer of Pinetown, and Virgie Bateman of Columbia; four brothers: Rufus Rose of Blandenboro and John Rose, Jack Rose and Melvin Rose, all of Columbia; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A graveside service was held at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Wednesday by the Rev. Desi Allen. Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, is handling arrangements. He was a native of Hyde County, son of the late Johnnie E. and Sally Gibbs Rose. He was preceded in death by his wife of 76 years, Dezzie Armstrong Rose who died in September 1992. Mr. Rose was a retired farmer and a member of the Gum Neck Church of Christ. Surviving are four daughters: Rosa Lee Patrick and Virgie Bateman, both of Columbia, Gretchel Watson of Pinetown, and Dezzie Rose of Edenton; five sons: Fred Rose of Virginia Beach, Va., Rufus Rose of Bladenboro, Johnny Rose, Melvin Rose, and Jack Rose, all of Columbia; one sister, Eunice Spencer of Chesapeake, Va.; 34 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Gum Neck Church of Christ with Larry Weaver officiating. Burial will follow in Azalea Memorial Gardens. Mr. Rose, a native of Hyde County, was the. widower of Jessie Overton Rose. He was a member of Moyock Baptist Church, Moyock, and was a retired farmer. Survivors include a daughter, Peggie R. Belch, and a son, Billy Rose, Jr., both of Chesapeake; a sister, Maggie Banks; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Saturday in Moyock Baptist Church by the Rev. Vic Ramsey. Burial is to be in Moyock Cemetery. (The Coastland Times - December 30, 1990) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ROSS, Grace Spencer SWAN QUARTER - Grace Spencer ROSS, 85, of Route #1, died March 31 at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven. A native of Middletown in Hyde County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas L. and Beulah Watson Spencer. She and her husband, the late Charlie Warren Ross, founded and operated the Warren Ross Grocery Store near their home at New Holland until 1985 when she retired. Surviving are a son, Robert S. Ross of Rt. 1, Swan Quarter and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the family plot in Soule Cemetery. Mike Caton, minister, officiated. The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Ross, Route #1, Swan Quarter. Arrangements were by Bryan Funeral Service. (The Coastland Times - Thursday, April 2, 1992) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ RUARK, Victor FAIRFIELD - Victor RUARK, 40, of Belhaven, was killed by a gunshot through the heart while guiding a party of Norfolk hunters at Fairfield Monday. The party had just gotten their limit and Ruark, who was getting ready to take up, was shot when a loaded gun, carelessly propped in the blind by one of the party, fell down. Mr. Ruark had gone over to guide this partly for his friend, Hyde County Recorders Judge, Joe Simmons, who is a regular guide, but who had to take the day off to go to swan Quarter to hold court. The accident occurred at 3:25 p.m. Monday. Donald Scott, 18, of Norfolk, Va., was one of the 5 persons from Virginia in the blind hunting party. One member of the party had killed a goose and it is said that Ruark, serving as guide, had gone out to bring in the goose. In some way the gun discharged accidentally, hitting Ruark near his heart. He is said to have died instantly. Sheriff Charlie Cahoon and Coroner Pratt Williamson investigated and did not deem an inquest necessary. Shortly over a year ago, a young hunter died of an accidental rifle shot at Fairfield. He was D.W. Fields, Jr. Mr. Ruark was a native of Hoopersville, Md., but had lived in Belhaven for several years where his father, the late W.G. Ruark, was engaged in the seafood business. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Lillie Ruark of Belhaven and Hoopersville; his wife, Mrs. Virginia Ball Ruark; a daughter, Vickie; a son, Billy; and one sister, Mrs. Charlie Midgett of Belhaven. A man of agreeable nature, he had many friends. His priciple occupation was boating and fishing. Mrs. Ruark is the owner of the Virginia Shop, a Belhaven clothing store. He was a member of the Belhaven Legion Post, Trinity Church, and Masonic Lodge of Port Royal, S.C. and a veteran of WW II. He had been employed for some time with the Latham Seed and Implement Co. of Belhaven. Funeral services were held Wednesday from Trinity Methodist Church at 3 o'clock conducted by Rev. L.P. Jackson and assisted by Rev. A.J. Mackie. Services at the grave were in charge of the American Legion and burial was in the Belhaven Community cemetery. (The Coastland Times - Friday, December 18, 1953; pg. 5) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ RUE, Annie Jones FAIRFIELD - Annie Jones RUE, 97, of Route #1, died Monday, April 20, at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven. She had most recently resided at Cross Creek Health Care Center. Born Nov. 4, 1900, she was the daughter of the late Abram and Ellen Farrow Jones. She was the widow of James Henry Rue who died in 1964. Mrs. Rue attended the former East Carolina Teacher's College and later taught school in Hyde County at the schools located at Lake Landing, Dark Woods, Rose Bay and Fairfield. She was long active in the Fairfield United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Fairfield Book Club, and was very active in the instruction of arts and crafts during World War II. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fairfield United Methodist Church with the Rev. Chris Humphreys and Steve Byran officiating. Burial followed in Fairfield Cemetery. Local relatives include three first cousins: Mildred Gibbs of Middletown, Maggie Farrow of Swan Quarter, and Ralph O'Neal of Stumpy Point. Arrangements were by Bryan Funeral Service, Swan Quarter. OCRACOKE - A death that saddened the community of Ocracoke, was that of E.A. RUSH on Friday, March 26 at the Veterans Hospital in Salisbury. Mr. Rush was the husband of Aldina Garrish Rush, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Preston Garrish of Ocracoke. During WWII he served at Ocracoke in the USCG. For the past several years Mr. & Mrs. Rush had resided in Beaufort. Besides the wife, a daughter, Bobby Jean Rush, survives the deceased. Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at the Ann Street Methodist Church in Beaufort.
