Mrs. Sadler, a native of Leechville, was the daughter of the late Pilos and Sudie Keefer Smith. She worked for many years as a seamstress with the former Belhaven Manufacturing Company. Survivors include a son, Delmer M. Sadler of Swan Quarter; five daughters: Sybil S. Gibbs of Swan Quarter; Ellen S. Wood, Mae S. Ambrose and Jane S. Chesson, all of Plymouth; and Brenda S. Roper of Scranton; a sister, Lillian Henries of Washington; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held January 2 at 3 p.m. at the gravesite in Soule Cemetery. The Rev. Mrs. Sadler was a native of Beaufort County. She was preceded in death by her son, Edward Sadler, and her daughter, Christine Stotesberry. Surviving are four granddaughters: Carol S. Aman and Wanda S. Morton of Maysville, Lisa Stotesberry of Felda, Florida, and Susie Gibbs of Engelhard; and three grandsons: Marty Sadler of Maysville, Curtis and ernie Stotesberry of Swan Quarter; 14 great-grandchildren; and her son-in-law, Roland Stotesberry of Swan Quarter. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 23, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Maysville with the Rev. George Packer officiating. Burial will be in the Dogwood Memorial Cemetery in Maysville. The family will receive friends at the home of Jack and Carol Aman in Belgrade. Born in Glynn County, Georgia November 17, 1970, he was the son of Garry Wayne and Lynn Jennette Sadler. He worked as a commercial fisherman. Charlie joined the Swan Quarter Baptist Church in September of this year and was baptized at that time. Funeral services were held Friday at the gravesite in the family plot at Soule Cemetery. Steve Bryan officiated. Surviving in addition to his parents are his paternal grandmother, Hazel T. Sadler, and his two brothers, Vernon T. Sadler and Eric W. Sadler, all of Swan Quarter. Born in Hyde County on February 17, 1911, he was the son of the late James Edgar and Challie Sawyer Sadler. He was a long active member of Rose Bay Missionary Baptist Church where he had served as deacon for many years. Mr. Sadler was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, Bell Island Camp and was a part of so much that is enjoyed in Hyde County today. He worked as a truck sales representative for the Rose Bay Oyster Company under the management of Mr. Jennette and later with Swan Quarter Crab Company. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Alice Sawyer Sadler; two daughters: Dorothy S. Equils and son-in-law William M. Equils of Scranton, and Edith Fay S. Gibbs and son-in-law David Gibbs of Washington; one brother, Lee Sadler of Edenton; one sister, Belle S. Brickhouse of Avon Lake, Ohio; 5 grandchildren and 11 great-grand- children. He was preceded in death by brothers: Staton Sadler, Edmond Sadler, Lundy Sadler, and Sheridan Sadler, and sisters: Lulu S. Sawyer and Blanche S. Brickhouse. Graveside services were held. Friday in Soule cemetery. Sadler, a native of Hyde County, was the son of the late Frank and Mollie Midgette Sadler. He was a prominent farmer in the Lake Comfort Community and was a member of the Middleton Christiain Church, as well as the Atlantic Lodge AF&AM for more than 50 years. Sadler was a member of the Hyde County Board of Commissioners from 1947-61. He was chairman of the board for several years. He is survived by his wife: Mrs. Zerola Midgette Sadler of the home; three sons: Gervis E. Sadler, Ottis E. Sadler and H.L.Sadler of Fairfield; two daughters: Mrs. Edith S. Pugh and Mrs. Betty S. Spencer of Rt. 1, Engelhard; a brother, Frank Sadler of Swan Quarter; a sister, Mrs. Maggie S. Dodd of Belhaven; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was born at Lake Landing to the late Zachariah Spencer and Lillian Spencer. He served in the Army during World War II. He was married to Lydie Mae Hankins Sadler. Surviving are six daughters: Mary Mosely, Judy Mae Benjamin and Cheryll Ebron, all of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ella Mann of Belhaven, Hazel Basnight of Gum Neck and Teresa Salsbury of Baltimore; six sons: James Boomer of Pantego, William Sadler of Brooklyn, N. He was the owner and operator of the former J.C's Motel and Restaurant for 26 years, serving hunters throughout the state of North Carolina. Mr. Sadler was a member of the Fairfield United Methodist Church. He was married first to the former Mae Willis Roberts who died in 1981. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Carroll Gibbs Sadler; a sister, Maude Sadler Pinkham of Baltimore, Md. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. January 14 in Fairfield United Methodist Church. She was a member of Bayview Baptist Church in Norfolk and the Order of Eastern Star, Old Dominion Chapter 100. Survivors include a daughter, Linda S. Mrs. Sanderson was the daughter of the late Cullen and Rena Credle Barber and spent all of her lifetime in Hyde County. She was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church at Lake Landing, the Woman's Auxiliary and was active in the Sunday School and choir as long as her health permitted. She was the widow of Thomas E. Sanderson. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Eugenia S. Marshall of Swan Quarter; one granddaughter; one sister, Mrs. A.C.D. Noe of Bath; several nieces and nephews. A native of Tyrrell County, he was the son of the late Julian and Amanda Spencer Sawyer. He had lived in Hyde County for 21 years and was a member of Pleasant Grove Church of Christ. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lillian Payne Sawyer; a daughter, Mrs. Christine S. Hopkins of Goldsboro; a step-son, Clyde Litchfield of Columbia; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. This aged man came to his death from the dead limb of a tree while chopping wood on the farm of Capt. John Berry. Born in Hyde County about 1816, and residing at the place of his nativity until grown, he grew discontent with farm life and resolved to try his fortunes upon the deep seas. He was a rover for 42 years from ocean to ocean and port to port without hearing from anyone from his county. Never did he lost hope of the fortune he left home to seek. Twelve or fifteen years ago he returned to the land of his birth. His sisters, still living, received him after being convinced he was no imposter. He was not a member of any church but of strong Primitive Baptist faith. Peace to his ashes. Born in Hyde County in the Montgomery community, January 31, 1928, he was the son of the late Chancy J. and Lydia Mae Tyson Sawyer. He was married to the former Nellie Mae Allen on September 2, 1950. An avid hunter and fisherman, he was a member of the National Rifleman's Association, the Pungo River Hunting Club and was a commercial fisherman. He was an active member of the Scranton Christian Church. Surviving are his wife; four sons: Joe Don Sawyer, Guy Woodward Sawyer, Mike Lynn Sawyer, all of Scranton, and John Wayne Sawyer of Pantego; four daughters: Juanita Faye Acker of Ernul, Hattie Marlene Bridgman of Faquay-Varina, Margaret Ann Gibbs of Greensboro, and Angela Mae Truluck of Charleston, S.C.; a sister, Joyce S. Lewis Edward RANSOMVILLE - A man who made his mark in the ministry following his upbringing in Sladesville, Hyde County, passed away Friday evening last in the Ransomville community. Rev. Lewis Edward SAWYER, 81, retired minister of the Methodist church, retired 7 years ago. He was the son of Samuel and Annie Peele Sawyer. Following his schooling in Hyde County he later entered Trinity College, now Duke University, to study for the ministry. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lizzie Roper Sawyer; and two daughters by a former marriage: Miss Lucy Sawyer of Washington, D.C. and Mrs. Mary Morton of Baltimore, Md.; two grandsons: John and Douglas Clarkson; two sisters: Mrs. Ella Bell of Belhaven and Mrs. A.S. Cooper of Raleigh. Mr. Sawyer was a former member of the Belhaven- Pantego Lions Club and a member of the Belhaven Masonic Lodge No. 509 and a member of the York and Scottish Rites Bodies and of the Shrine. Mrs. Sawyer was born in Sladesville Community of Hyde County, daughter of the late Walter and Lenora Cullipher Lupton. She was a homemaker, a nurse's aide with Pungo District Hospital and a member of the Swan Quarter Christian Church. She was first married to Joseph M. Raburn, who preceded her in death in 1961 and later married Reuben E. Sawyer, Jr. who died in 1969. Survivors are three sons: James Madison Raburn of St. George, Utah; John P. Raburn and Joseph W. "J.W." Raburn, both of Swan Quarter; four daughters: Harriet R. Pendleton of St. George, Utah; Lenora R. Bright and Doris R. Cahoon, both of Swan Quarter, and Josephine R. Haywood of Portsmouth, Va.; a brother, James L. Lupton of Hampton, Va.; five stepdaughters: Ruth S. Hopkins of High Point, Zella S. Stassfort of Marietta, Ga., Gloria S. Fotusky of Norfolk, Va., Mary Lou Sawyer of Panama City, Fla. and Rachel S. McCain of Florida; three stepsons: Floyd W. Sawyer, Jr. and William D. Sawyer, both of Belhaven, Rueben E. She was a native of South River County, a former resident of Ocracoke, and a retired owner and operator of the Cockle Crick Gift Shop in Ocracoke. Mrs. Scarborough was the daughter of the late Clenon F. and Beulah Bass Boyette. Mrs. Scarborough is survived by one son, Kelly Scarborough of Mandeville; one sister, Lanie B. Wynn of Ocracoke; one brother, Clenon F. "C.F." Boyette of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a niece; three nephews; and three grandchildren. A church service was conducted in the Ocracoke United Methodist Church on Friday, May 27, by the Rev. Jim Johnson. Burial followed in the Ocracoke Community Cemetery. (The Coastland Times-Sunday, May 29, 1994) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SCARBOROUGH, Susan Gaskill OCRACOKE - Friends and relatives were saddened by the death on Thursday, March 25, of Mrs. Susan Gaskill SCARBOROUGH, age 76, following several days of illness caused by a second stroke of paralysis. Mrs. Scarborough was born at Ocracoke and had spent most of her life here. She was the daughter of Sarah Owens and Benjamin Gaskill. In December 1897 she was married to Charles Scarborough. Surviving besides her husband are three sons: Ernest of Audobon, N.J., Alton of Pedricktown, N.J., and Charles Thomas of New Orleans, La; three grandchildren; one brother, Lum Gaskill of Ocracoke. Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church with Rev. Robert L. Vickery, Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Community cemetery. "Miss Sue", as she was affectionately called, was a member of the Methodist Church and active in the Woman's Society of Christian Service, as well as types of community and civic work. SCARBOROUGH, native of Ocracoke, died on Friday, March 27th, at the home of his son, N.B. Scarborough, at Chester, Pa. His age was eighty-three. Funeral services were conducted at Ocracoke on Tuesday afternoon with Rev. W.Y. Stewart officiating. N.B. Scarborough and family of Chester, Pa., and his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Foster and two daughters of Philadelphia, were here for the services. Other survivors are a brother, Charlie M. Scarborough, and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth J. Williams, both of Ocracoke, and 4 other grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services were held late Saturday afternoon at the Ocracoke Methodist Church with Rev. W.Y. Stewart officiating. Burial was in the family plot. He is survived by his wife and three children and two grandchildren, all of whom were called home by their father's sudden illness, T.C. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in WWII and was a manager of the Engelhard Plant for Cargill, Inc. until his retirement in 1984. Born in Sladesville on December 14, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Theodore Braxton and Ethel Ayers Gibbs. She was the widow of Daniel Webster Sears, Sr. who died in 1974. Mrs. Sears was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Fairfield where she served as secretary and treasurer for many years, and was a member of the advisory board of the Diocese of East Carolina for the Episcopal Church. She was a long-time member of the executive committee of the Southern Albemerle Association and was honored as Hyde County's "Democrat of the Year" by the Democratic Party. She enjoyed writing and for many years was Hyde County correspondent for Washington Daily News and The Coastland Times. In more recent years, she served as the Hyde correspondent for Beaufort-Hyde News. She was a devoted mother and community person, and was an avid athletic supporter and member of the Mattamuskeet Athletic Boosters. Surviving are sons: Nathan B. Sears of Ocracoke, Charles R. Sears and wife Debbie of Fairfield; daughters: Marie S. Barnhill of Williamston, Marlis S. Smith and husband Erwin of Fairfield, Sarah S. Spencer of Williamston, Mary S. Averette of Williamston, Alla S. Sadler and Shelby S. Sawyer, both of Fairfield; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services are to be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, May 28 at the family plot in Fairfield Cemetery. William H. Booth and Steve Bryan will conduct the service. Funeral services will be held in the Brooks Cemetery in the Gulrock Community of Hyde County at 2 p.m. Thursday. The Rev. William Renn, United Methodist minister, will officiate. A native of Dawson, Ga., he was a graduate of N.C. State University class of 1955. He was a registered surveyor and operated Tri-County Surveyors. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in World War II. He was former chairman of the Hyde County Democratic Party. Surviving are his wife, Susan Schmitt Smith; a son, Frederick Alexander "Zandy" Smith of Rodanthe; two daughters, Jennifer Smith Armstrong of Birmingham, Ala. and Mary Robin Smith of Chapel Hill; a brother, John C. Born in Fairfield Township, she was the daughter of the late Wilson Lucas and Clarise Spencer Gibbs. She was an active farmer in her working years and was a member of Pleasant Grove Church of Christ. Surviving are a son, Tracy Smith of Elm City; a daughter, Shirley A. Keech of New Bern, with whom she had made her home; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild. Mrs. Smith was born in Sladesville. She was also a former yeomanette during World War I. She was the widower of James J. Smith and was a member of Monumental United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Portsmouth Woman's Club. Survivors include two sisters: Gelen W. Buckwater of Portsmouth, and Delle W. Staples of Jacksonville, Florida; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, by the Rev. Arthur Wingfield. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Surviving are a son, Tracy Leon [Levon?] Smith, Jr. of Elm City; two daughters: Anita S. Hatchel and Starling Ann Smith, both of Elm City; a sister, Shirley S. Keech of New Bern; and 8 grandchildren. Mr. Smithwick was a member of the Northside Church of Christ, Newport News. He is survived by one daughter, Jeanne Forbus of Newport News; one son, James C. Born in Engelhard December 3, 1908, she was the daughter of the late Henry Gibbs and Mattie Helen Hodges Harris. She was the widow of Bruce Smithwick who died in 1977. Mrs. Smithwick was a member of Swan Quarter Baptist Church and a retired cafeteria staff member at Mattamuskeet and O.A. Peay Schools in Hyde County. Surviving are two sons: Bruce Sherwood Smithwick of Winterville and Danny Royce Smithwick of Chesapeake, Va.; three daughters: Eloise Smithwick Harris of Swan Quarter, Audrey Smithwick Tyson of Kinston and Hilda Smithwick Harris of Swan Quarter; 12 grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. Mrs. Smithwick was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Joyce Smithwick. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the family plot in Mt. Olive Church of Christ Cemetery in the Ponzer community. Rev. C.L. Reynolds will conduct the service. He was 63 and died Friday night in Duke Hospital at Durham following a severe illness of several months. He was born in Hyde County, the son of the late Fanny Smith and George Smithwick, and he was a member of the Mt. Olive Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife, the former Alice Jarvis; one brother, Rufus Smithwick of Leechville, and one sister, Mrs. Naomi Satterthwaite of Ponzer.
