(The Coastland Times - Tuesday, April 8, 1997; pg. 10A) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ TOMMY K. TOMMY K. PASSES ON - TOMMY K., the faithful retriever told about in last week's paper, has passed on to his reward at the age of 12 years. He died shortly after he was photographed by Aycock Brown and his story written for lover of good dogs. He died January 22 and is buried near US 264, in the front yard of his master, John Harrell Swindell of Swan Quarter. Tommy K. had retired from his great career as a companion of hunters in Lake Mattamauskeet, shortly before his death. Five days before he died, his master noticed the old dog was not feeling so well. Only a year ago, he had not lost so many of his teeth, and he eagerly herded hogs and cattle on the Swindell farm. Only a year ago, he could hold a 400 pound sow, or an 800 pound cow -- this 80 pound dog, nearly 12 years old. Mr. Swindell saw the old dog was not up to scratch, and brought him in his bedroom to sleep each night. For 5 days the old dog would go out into the morning sun, and lie where it fell, dreaming of the old days, and when dogs were dogs worthy of the name. As the sun moved around the house in its diurnal journey, the old dog would rise slowly and keep pace with it, endeavoring always to keep in range of its warmth. On the last morning of his life, he went out the door as usual, when the member of the household departed on their daily tasks about the farm. The old dog did not go, but lay down in the warm sunlight that bore down upon the back porch. When all had gone about their work, he quietly arose and made his way to a distant place in the soft grass of the Swindell plantation. Maybe he didn't know that his master's watchful eye was upon him. Mr. Swindell dropped his task and went over to where the old dog had disappeared, and found him in the grass, peaceful and still as if his passing had been without struggle, his body growing cold in death. There is an old colored man, 75 years old, Deacon in the church, the handy-man about the Swindell plantation. When it was decided that Tommy K would be buried in the front yard of the Swindell home, under a big tree near US 264, the Tideland Trail which has so many other interesting things upon it, old Uncle Press Reddick wanted to hold a proper funeral. So while the group looked on, the last remains of Tommy K. enclosed in a box, were lowered in his grave. Uncle Press Reddick conducted a service for the faithful animal that so long had been his friend too, his companion and helper about the farm; while the Swindell family stood by in tearful silence and the wild geese honked over Mattamuskeet, the last chapter of the life of Tommy K. was written. The family returned to the house with its vacant place, such as can exist only in the heart of a child, or in the heart of one who loves his dog with the only affection that rivals the ties of heart and blood. (As an animal lover myself, I couldn't pass this obituary up which was probably written for The Coastland Times - January 1951) [Submitted by Merlin S. Berry of Gambrills, Md.] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ TOOLEY, Mary Bell SCRANTON - Mary Bell TOOLEY, died August 27 in her home.
