The following 1874 Hyde County Tax List was transcribed by Sybble Smithwick
and contributed by Kay Lynn Midgett Sheppard. The original document is
preserved at the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh, NC. Thanks to
both of you.

This data was transcribed as it appeared, and was recorded for five
Districts: Currituck, Swan Quarter, Fairfield, Ocracoke, and Lake Landing.
While the surnames in each district are recorded alphabetically, i.e. A, B,
C... the surnames within each letter of the alphabet are not necessarily
alphabetical. Therefore, when searching for a certain name, check the
entire letter. Also be aware that there are spelling variations for some of
the surnames.

The form used to record the data contained several columes: Name, Age &
Race, Acres, Description and Total Tax, however for most of the Districts,
data for only two of the columes has been entered: Name and Race.
