St. Michael's Evangelical Lutheran Church - Iredell County, NC Submitted to the USGenWeb by Thomas P. Winslow tom_winslow@msn.com St. Michael's Evangelical Lutheran Church Record Book B 1839-1949 Iredell County, Troutman, North Carolina The following document was located in the Iredell County Public Library, Statesville, NC during August 1989 by Thomas L. Troutman of Pasadena, TX. EARLY HISTORY OF ST. MICHAEL'S EV. LTH. CHURCH My father [?], Andrew Barringer, was for many years an Elder in St. Michael's Church, also a trustee of the land on which the church stood. Thieves had entered the church at various times and he believed the early records had been stolen. After his death, a secretary and bookcase belonging to him was given to my mother, Lucinda, as a part of her dower. After her death the heirs of her estate, while examining the contents of this secretary, found a manuscript in which was written, as I recollect, "The First Communion, this Fourth Sunday in August, 1815." Then, just beneath this, "August 27, 1815." Then following was a list of names beginning with Charles N. Mills and wife, Elizabeth. This list contained twenty names, the last being, "Peter, a black man." The date of "The Second Communion," was given, but the names of the Communicants was blank. The date of the "Third Communion" was given followed by a list of perhaps thirty-five or forty names. These were followed by the lists of the "Fourth," "Fifth," "Sixth," and later Communions, the dates usually being at or near Easter or Christmas. The fifth or sixth Communion was followed by the words, "at St. Michael's." The deed was given by Michael Walcher in September, 1823 to the trustees, Charles Mills, Martin Harkey, William Lippard, Jacob Troutman, and John Harkey, has in it the words, "on which the church now stands." From these records, and their circumstances, it is evident that this "First Communion" was the first communion of St. Michael's congregation, just 99 years, ten months ago. The pastor's name was not given, but from other sources, we learn that it was Robert Johnson Miller. This manuscript was in the residence of P.A. Barringer, when it was burned on March 10, 1907, Statesville, NC.
