Lutz of Enochville, North Carolina, on Thursday, August 19th, 1886, according to the Form laid down in the Book of Worship of the Evangelical Lutheran General Synod in North America in its main features. In the box enclosed in the corner—a brick pillar—was deposited a Bible, a copy of the Minutes of the last meeting of the North Carolina Evangelical Lutheran Synod, a copy of the minutes of the Ev. Luth. General Synod South, a copy each of the Lutheran Visitor and Our Church Paper (Weekly Lutheran newspaper), the names of the Pastors, the Assisting Minister [and Assistant on this occasion], the members of the present Church Council and the Building Committee. In the front of the same pillar—under the South corner of the church and facing the Soutwest—was inserted a marble tablet with the inscription: St. Michael's Evan Luth Church Built 1886 Mr. William Pool, a builder of North Carolina College and many of the best houses in Statesville, NC and now a member of this congregation, did the masonry. Rev. Lutz prefaced his sermon with the historic remarks on the Lutheran Church in the United States from the organization of the first general body in 1820. He referred to the dissension of a large mass of the ministers from parts of the Augsburg Confession and the tendency of a flood of German immigrants with German doctrines and usages, some twenty five years ago; of the translation of many of Luther's works into English & to the healing of these dissensions; so that these is growing unanimity in points of doctrine among the different bodies of Lutherans in the United States. His text was 1st Samuel 7:12—"Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpeh and Shen and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying Hitherto hath the Lord helped us." He referred also to Joshua 24:26, where a stone was used for a witness to Deuteronomy 27:1-8, and to the joy attending the first Corner Stone laying—Job 38:6&7. Etc, Etc. After some remarks by the pastor on the immediate work of the congregation, a collection was taken, a hymn being sung at the same time and closed with a benediction. The early records of this congregation have been lost or stolen. The date of the first building is unknown. The congregation organized in 1815. The deed for the land on which the old church stands was given by Mr. Michael Walcher (or Walkup), September 19, 1823. (Recorded in the office of the Registrar of Deeds, Statesville, Book U, page 10), about 1848-50. The church was enlarged by removing the log wall of the one side and adding sufficient frame to make it 36X50 feet. Last summer the congregation decided to rebuild, the new building to be at Troutman's, a steadily growing village and railroad station of about one hundred inhabitants and one-and-one-fourth miles northwest of the old church. The land deed was given March 9, 1885, by Mr. H.M. Brown, Mr. Jacob D. Troutman, and Dr. Richard W. Mills. The new church is 30X60 feet with tower nitche for pulpit and two small rooms—frame with plastering inside. New Organization Troutman's Presbyterian Congregation Mr. Daniel Melchior, Mrs. Leah Melchior, Mr. John V. Melchior, Miss Martha J. Melchior, Miss Henrietta L. Melchior, Mrs. Margaret C.
