His name was William Gill, and is mentioned in the historical sketches of General Washington's Military Family. The remains of this good patriot, made sacred by the offices the living performed around the person of the Father of his Country, in the time that tried men's souls, who shared the dangers and privations of his great Captain - lie beneath the sod in a graveyard, known as the cemetery of the "Young Family" on Hunting Creek, in the north part of Iredell and now in possession of John H. Dalton, Esq. The spot is indicated by a plain soapstone placed at the head of the grave with the following inscription: "Scared to the memory of William Gill who departed this life Sept. 4th, 1797 - aged 47 years." A correspondent having communicated to us the above particulars says: "It is but due to his memory that a monument be erected to mark the spot where the man that served his country from the commencement until the close of the Revolution was laid. He was a native of Virginia, married Susanna Young before the commencement of the war and removed to North Carolina some years after the war. His widow survived him 34 years. She never asked anything for his services or his descendants." We think the public will coincide with our correspondent that a monument should be erected to the memory of the deceased by Congress or our State.
