John Cochran’s statement of support [26 Sept 1844] State of North Carolina Iredell County On this 26th day of Sept. 1844 personally appeared before me W F Cowan a justice of the peace in and for the county aforesaid John Cochran aged about eighty years a resident of the county state aforesaid who after being duly sworn according to law deposeth and sayeth that he is well acquainted with Elizabeth Dickey and that she is the widow of the identical Captain John Dickey who served in the Revolutionary war as stated in the declaration of Elizabeth Dickey his said widow. he further says that he was well acquainted with the said John Dickey before during & after the Revolutionary War. the said Dickey served as a captain during the said war under Genl Rutherford sometimes. also that said Dickey was Captain of a company in the battle of Ramsours Mill, when he acted with great bravery during the battle so much so that his conduct on that day was the chief topic of conversation in his neighborhood & the county around for sometime afterwards. that he still recollects part of a song that was composed immediately after the battle & frequently sung for a long time afterwards. the only verse or part of a verse that has not escaped his memory is as follows viz "As for old colonel Locke he kept pretty well back. While brave Captain Dickey brought on the attack. He ordered them to retreat & form Which made our old hero grievously storm." That was Captain of a company & served under Genl Davidson in guarding the ford, on the Catawba river & was at Cowan's ford when the Brittish crossed at that place where Genl. Davidson was killed & continued firing until his men had nearly all left him & till numbers of the arriving had passed him. when he "Dickey" secreted himself under the bank of the river till the Brittish had passed on. he then followed on & joined his company. that he does not recollect any other Battle the said Dickey was engaged in but has no doubt he was in others. the deponent well knowing said Dickey was engaged as a volunteer in military services pretty much during the whole of the war from first to last and was counted & revered in his neighborhood as a brave Captain of the Revolution up to the time of his death which took place about the year 1808. in the spring that said Dickey was about fifty years of age or upwards of fifty when he quit the services. that he the said Dickey & Elizabeth Leasey were married in the fall or winter of 1793 & that they lived together as man & wife up to the period of said Dickey's death. that he was a ruling elder in the presbyterian church for a long time before & up to the time of his death. further deponent sayth not. Alexander clerk of the Court of pleas and Quarter Sessions for said County do certify that W. F. Cowan whose name is signed to the foregoing affidavit is an acting Justice of the Peace in aforesaid County and that the signature purporting to be his is genuine and I further certify that John Cochran whose name is signed to the said affidavit is a credible witness In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of my office this 23rd day of November in the 69th year of our Independence A.D. 1844 J.
