David Hair’s statement of support [30 Sept 1844] State of North Carolina Iredell County On this 30th day of Sept 1844 personally appeared before W. F. Cowan one of the acting justices of the peace in & for the county aforesaid David Hair a resident of said county who is a pensioner of the United States aged about eighty four years who after being duly sworn according to law deposeth & sayeth that he was well acquainted with Captain John Dickey who served in the Revolutionary War. the identical person who was the husband of the instant applicant Elizabeth Dickey that the said Capt. Dickey resided during the war in Center congregation then Rowan County now Iredell, State aforesaid in the neighborhood of the Brevards. That he served one campaign of five months with Capt Dickey, who commanded a company under General Rutherford in South Carolina at Camden & in that region of country. the deponent and Captain Dickey were both under General Rutherford when that General was taken prisoner. that he & Capt Dickey served one other tour of three months together under Genl. Davidson & was both under the Genl when he was killed at Cowan's ford on the Catawba River where the Brittish crossed the said river at said ford. the said still Dickey serving as Captain & commanding a company. that he deponent thinks Capt Dickey served with him in one other war to Wilmington state aforesaid at three months. he deponent is not certain of this service but thinks so. he well known that Captain Dickey was almost continually in the service during the whole war & generally acted as Captain in all his services that he was usually called "old Captain Dickey in consequence of his bearing. as deponent supposes about fifty years of age at that time. that deponent in going from his home to join his company in South Carolina, lodged at Captain Dickeys house over night at one time. that he always understood that Capt. Dickey commanded a company under Col. Locke at the battle of Ramsours Mill. deponent was not in that battle but his brother Robt Hair was & he often heard him Robt Hair speak of Capt. Dickey, a gallant comrade in that battle, that Capt Dickey was always regarded in this region of country up to the time of his death to have been a soldier of the Revolution War from old age & loss of memory deponent cannot recollect any other particular services of Captain Dickey but deponent knows that said Dickey was in the service as aforesaid & was almost continually out during the war as aforesaid. that from bodily infirmity deponent cannot appear in open court to make this affidavit further he sayeth not. Sworn & subscribed on this day & year above written before me W. F. Cowan JP. David Hair (his mark) State of North Carolina Iredell County I W. F. Cowan a justice of the peace in and for the County aforesaid do hereby certify that David Hair whose signature is attached to the foregoing affidavit is a credible person and that from frequent conversation with him on the subject I have no doubt of the correctness of his statement in the foregoing affidavit. that from old age & bodily infirmity I do not think he could attend the Court without considerable risk of health & perhaps of his life.
