7.  Letter concerning lost marriage bond


[5 March 1845]

To the Commissioner of Pensions
Washington City
D. C.
North Carolina
Iredell County

	I J. F. Alexander Clerk of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions for 
the County aforesaid do hereby certify that I have made diligent examination 
in my office for the marriage Bond of Capt Jno Dickey who intermarried with 
Elizabeth Leazey.  Which I have been unable to find and am fully of opinion 
that it is not in my office at this time.

	I am aware that it was a number of years after this County was 
established before there was any regular place or office for keeping papers 
belonging to the officer of the County Court and from the deranged state of 
the old papers the clerk must have been very negligent in the discharge of 
this duty as I find it almost impossible to find any paper of about that 
date.  I also certify that in the year 1836 our town near the Court House took 
fire which caused the papers to be taken from the office which was done as a 
matter of course in a very hasty and confused manner and many papers I have no 
doubt were lost or misplaced so that they never can be replaced.  I further 
certify that some short time subsequent to the fire I was passing through the 
court yard and found a marriage bond given by one of our citizens whom I was 
very intimate which was filed a very short time after this was a county
