Miscellaneous documents and summary outlining applications [8 Sept 1852] Brownsville Sep 8 1852 [?] I [?] Margaret Anderson's pension papers please acknowledge the receipt of them and give them the proper direct [?] A. W. Venable Hon Comr of Pensions [7 March 1853] Salisbury N. C. March 7th 1853 Mr. Heath Dear Sir. That you may understand the communication and the enclosed certificate, you will please refer to your books for the case of Cap. John Dickey, where you will find, that, in the month of May last there was claim allowed to Mrs. Anderson as the Daughter and only surviving heir of Cap. John Dickey, widow. after this first claim was allowed in the month of July, a certificate was issued by Mr. Clarke Comp. for this state affording proof of additional services by John Dickey. This Certificate was sent by me to the Pension Office through Hon. Jas. P. Caldwell six months ago and heard nothing of it since until a few days ago I was informed by Mr. Caldwell that it was lost or mislaid and that must obtain another. Enclosed therefore you will find the same Certificate reissued, which I hope you will take better care of. Mrs. Anderson requests me to say that she is exceedingly anxious that you should pass upon her claim immediately. She is now old and feeble and stands greatly in need of assistance. Let me urge upon you to examine into this claim at one. Her application has now been before the office in over six months and there can possibly be no difficulty in the way. I have no interest in the world in this matter. I am not her agent. She has no agent. I am writing this letter for a matter of accommodation. As soon as you examine this case write to me at Salisbury N. C. Yours etc. J. H. Coffman [26 April 1853] Salisbury N. Carolina April 26th 1853 Sir The papers and letters on the subject of my claim being in the hands of my former Agent, I shall not be able to answer your inquiry as to the time the application was made with certainty. My Mother Elizabeth Dickey first made application, through her Agent Freeland Cowan, I think about the year 44 or 45. After her death, which occurred shortly afterwards, I made application in my own name as the only heir of Elizabeth Dickey, but on account of the incapacity of my Agent, nothing materially was done until some time in April 1852 when I renewed my application. Mr. Jones being my Agent and sometime between the 1st & 10th of May 1852 the claim was allowed for seventeen months of service. Shortly after evidence of additional service was obtain and sent to your office. The Certificate containing this evidence will explain to you why it was not included in the original application. As it was the same case, it was not thought necessary to make another formal application. I thought all that was necessary to be done was to refer to your books which certainly contain the original applications together with the evidence. I hope my dear Sir you will cause diligent search to be made in order if possible to discover these papers for they are certainly on file or your honorable Predecessor had a strange way of doing business. If these papers cannot be found it will cause me immense trouble and expense to furnish all the evidence etc. necessary in this case. As I have not a copy of the Acts I am not able to say under what act the application was made unless it was the act of 38, 41 & 42 which secured a pension to the widow whose husband served in the Rev. War and to whom she was married previous to the year 1817 The application was made from the state of North Carolina, Rowan Co. I hope you will inform me as soon as thorough the search can be made of the results. So that I may know what to do, for if it cannot possibly be found I must try and collect the evidence again. Write to me at Salisbury N. C. Care of Jno. H. Coffman. Your very Respectfully Margaret Anderson Mr. L. P. Weldo Washington, D. C. P. S. As the first application was made in the year 44 or 45 the case has been pending so long that it will be necessary for you to examine your books back to the year 44. This will cause your clerk considerable trouble, for which I am willing to allow him an extra fee if he is allowed to receive it.
