Request for biographical information [31 May 1899] The Isbell National Bank of Talladega. Talladega, Ala. May 31st 1899 Clerk Pension Office War Department Washington, C. D. Dear Sir: As I wish to join the Daughters of the Am. Revolution, I write to ask you to please look in the records to see if there is anything regarding two of my ancestors, James Blakeley and John Dickey, both of whom fought in the Revolution, participating in the battles of Eutaw, Cowpens, and my other battles. In a book called the "Scotch Irish of America", published 1889 (Robert Clarke & Co., publishers, Cincinnati) there is mention of the above named persons on pages 202, 204, 205. They were Scotch Irish, and came from Ulster, Ireland and in 1730-1734 settled in Williamsburg, South Carolina of which Kingstree is the county seat, their families afterwards removing to Maury Co., Tenn. Any information you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Very Respectfully, Mrs. Ellen McConnell Talladega, Ala. [22 Feb 1907] Greensburg, Ind., Feb. 22, '07 To whom this may concern, Pension Department Washington, D.C. Dear Sir, I am seeking information regarding an ancestor who the family traditions say, fought in the Revolution with Washington at Valley Forge. If this is true, his name, I presume, would be enrolled. But I do not know whether he enlisted from Kentucky or from North Carolina, his former home. My uncle tells me that his grandfather had often talked to him of Samuel Dickey, his father and of the terrible winter with Washington at Valley Forge. The Dickey's came originally from North Carolina, in which state they settled on their arrival in America. They were Scotch Presbyterians and were banished from Scotland because of their religion. A son was born in mid- Atlantic, from whom, we trace our descent. I mention this because my Uncle who has been cripple from boyhood, spent much time with his grandfather, who lived to be nearly a hundred, and tracked much of the early history of his family; and, he thinks the child born on the ocean was Samuel Dickey, his great-grandfather. If his name is enrolled with other soldiers of the Revolution and the place of his birth is given, it will be either on the ocean or in North Carolina. My father believes it was Samuel Dickey's father instead of himself. during the Civil War while Father was stationed in New Orleans, he came across a dentist whose name was Dickey. He showed Father a very old paper giving the account of the banishment of the Dickeys & the birth of the son on the ocean. Father thinks his name, as given there was John, and that he was afterwards the Father of Samuel Dickey. Samuel Dickey's tombstone in the old Elk Creek cemetery near Middletown. It gives his birth as 1753 but does not mention the place. He came to Kentucky with Daniel Boone, but whether he enlisted from Kentucky, or went back to North Carolina & enlisted, I am unable to say. But he settled ultimately in Kentucky near Georgetown, and from thence, came to Ohio & settled in Butler Co. near the Elk Horn creek among the Illinois(?). As Boone went to Ky. from the Yadkin river in North Carolina, we think Samuel Dickey must have gone from the same vicinity. I am very anxious to prove the truth of this history, and any information you can give me will be gratefully received. If it is true, I am eligible to the Daughters of the American Revolution which I am very anxious to join. Hoping to hear from you and thanking you in advance, Very respectfully Olive Dickey Gilham 406 N. Ireland St. Greensburg, Ind. [2 April 1907] Mooresville, N.C.
