John, North Carolina Line, Elizabeth, W4815, solder was born 23 July 1758 in Lancaster County PA. and he lived in Rowan County North Carolina, the Part That became Iredell County North Carolina at enlistment there at Iredell county 23 Aug 1832, Solder Brother William Stevenson age 69 was a resident there in 1832, AND SOLDIER DIED there on 2nd Nov 1836, Soldier had married Elizabeth Moffit on Sept 1st 1785 in Rowan County (later Iredell County) North Carolina. His widow applied 16 May 1843 in Iredall County and her age at that time was 82, In 1848 a Prudence Stevenson, aged 79 was a resident of Iredale County North Carolina but no relationship was given. This Solder's and widow's children were: Twins Mary and William born 26 June 1786, Rachel born 19 Jan 1788, David Moffitt Stevenson born Aug 1789, Jean born in 1790, Margaret born 1792, Furges born in February 1794, Agness born 1795, Elizabeth born in 1797, Thomas born in 1799, Prudence born in May 1801, Anny born in November 1802, Rebecca born in June 1805. William Woodsides Private Inf. & calvary Annual Pension Allowance $76.66 Service Served: N. C. Continental Line; Pension began Sept 3, 1833 Age 79. The following is the actual legal abstract of the transcript taken from the pension application of John Stevenson’s widow, sworn to in open court, by the witnesses having place their hand on the Book while the oath was administered in accordance with the law, on October 31, 1831 in the court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions held in Statesville, NC the center of Justice in the County of Iredell. “JOHN STEVENSON 1776. He went on the Cherokee expedition under Captain James Purviance and Col. Locke. Joined the army at a fort on the Catawba [Fort Davidson, Old Fort, NC] and marched into the valley towns [Cherokee villages]. Was three months on the tour. 1780. Volunteered under Capt. John Reid and Lt. Mussendine Matthews for service near Charlotte, where he remained for two months. Arrived at Ramseur’s Mill [Lincolnton, Lincoln County, NC] under General Rutherford the evening after the battle. Then he went on tour in pursuit of Colonel Bryan, the Tory. 1781. Under command of Colonel Lee (Light Horse Harry) of General Green’s horse [Calvary] at different times. Two months under Capt. Hugh Hall, [Brother Rev. James Hall] was in pursuit of Cornwallis. His [John’s] term expired before the Battle of Guilford Court House but he and some others remained and he was in the battle. [Note: Normal enlistment time was for 3 months]. Born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, July 23, 1758, and died Nov. 2, 1836 in Iredell County. Buried in Fourth Creek Cemetery [in unmarked grave]. During his service he was living within a half mile of his residence in 1832. It is said he was the son of William Stevenson, born Ulster 1725, and Mary McLelland, who came to Rowan in 1763. It is said that he had seven sons and three daughters, one of the sons being John.
