JAMES MARSHALL SLOAN OBIT. 18 July 1880 MINNIE b. SLOAN OBIT. 10 Dec. 1882 Brother and sister, knit by the ties of natural kinship cemented by those of a common orphanage. The subjects of this tribute were grandchildren of the late Wm. B. MCCORKLE, formerly of Wadesboro, North Carolina. Bereft of both father and mother in early childhood they were brought up by their uncle and guardian DR. J. R. MCCORKLE of Mooresville, North Caroliina. In many respects they were a remarkable pair of children. Invalids both of them, almost from infancy, they yet possessed so much vitality that they were enable to acquire a fair education, and to excite in the minds of their friends the hope that the tendency to early decline so manifest in them both might be arrested and that the rare traits of character displayed in their short lives might attain to full maturity. But it was otherwise ordered. Devotedly attached to each other and conscious of the facty they carried in their frail bodies the seeds of a fell disease, they seemed impressed with the belief they would speedily follow each other to a better land. Marshall had passed his 19th birthday and Minnie her 20th by only a few months. Both died of the same disease; both lingered many months. Patience under suffering was eminently characteristic of them both.
