Cook aged sixty-one years, born in Bumcombe County of the State of North Carolina and a resident of Jackson County of the State of North Carolina would respectfully request that he is excluded from the benefits of the amnesty proclaimations issued 29 th May 1865 under the excepted classes of the first clause, that is that he has been a Postmaster under the Confederate States of America at Calvins Hill, Jackson County, North Carolina. Said office was created in the year 1862. Since the State of North Carolina ceeded from the old union. I was not and never have been a Postmaster under the United States Goverment. The office aforesaid having been created during the rebellion, I took it as an accomedation to my neighbors and frieids. This I suppose is my only offense to the government of the United States. I was always and still am a Constitutional Union Man, and opposed the act of sucsession, and before the act of sucsession always acted with the Democratic Party, But after my state, the state of North Carolina by a convention of the people went out of the federal union. I then felt it was my duty to abide by their decesion. I have not been with the army of the state of North Carolina, or that of the Confederate States, but as a citizen of North Carolina preformed all the requirements of my state during the rebellion. Your petitioner has taken the oath as prescribed in the amnesty proclamation of May 29th 1865 and expects in good faith to carry it out in the future. Said oath as taken by him is here with ______________. Your petitioner asked to be pardoned and restored the rights of a citizen in a free government ___________ he will even ask. Given under his hand at Webster, Jackson County, North Carolina. Sept. 23 1865 nd of the Independence of th United states, the 89th. Respectfully, Your obedient servant H. M. Cook -------------------------- State convention Hall Raliegh, N.C. Oct 3rd, 1865 H.M. Cook is a farmer and citizen of good moral character.
