C. Aug. 8, 1860 The Standard of Raleigh, N. C. Aug. 8, 1860 Departed this life, near Marianna, Fla., on Friday afternoon, the 6th inst., CAPT. BENJAMIN WYNNS, in the 71st year of age. During his sickness, which lasted for several months, he suffered much, yet with the patience and humble submission of the true Christian. The deceased was born on the 18th day of March 1790, in the Island of Bermuda. A short time after his birth his parents retured to North Carolina, their native state. At an early age, he became the Captain and owner of a vessel, which sailed for many years between the ports of the Bahama Islands and North Carolina. About twenty years hence he removed to this (Jackson) County, where he soon became a useful and prominent citizen. In the year 1846, while absent from the State, the people elected him, by a large majority to represent them in the lower branch of the Legislative Assembly, the duties of which he discharged, in a manner highly gratifying to his constituents. Honorable and upright in all his dealings, truth and justice marking his intercourse with his fellow- men, and won him many friends. He was an upright citizen, an affable gentleman, and truly devoted husband and parent. His feelings were gentle and kind, but always manly and candid. His ambition was to do right, and his only fear was to do wrong. He had met the trials and fulfilled the duties of three score years and ten, with fortitude and faithfulness, and his tomb will be garlanded by the recollection of a chaaracter -- in its moral adornments pure and elevated -- of manners simple, modest and retiring, and of an interior nature, tender and affectionate as woman's. A widow and three children are left to mourn the irreparable loss of an affectionate and doting father. They should not mourn without hope, but be consoled by the reflections that he has gone to a better land.
