This transcript made by me from 1938 transcript sent to Mr. Mimms W. Lee, Esq. from DAR. The DAR record was from Reverend George W. Beale, D. D. who made the original transcription and sent it to the DAR in 1911/1912. The entries were reviewed by Casanova G. Lee of Washington, D.C. and held as authentic by him. 2. Dr Casanova Lee also held at the time (1938) that the Bible entry, re Thomas Lee of Ditchley, was proof that Thomas Lee was the son of Richard and Judith Lee, but he noted that he could find no supporting proof in Richard's will or its probate regarding Thomas' name or legacy. 3. This Thomas Lee of Ditchley entry is the sole evidence that Thomas was associated with Ditchley. He may well be of the Lees of Ditchley, but he was not the son of Richard and Judith LEE who were the owners of Ditchley at the time. Ditchley Hall was the LEE family seat, so it is reasonable to suspect that other LEE family groups were living somewhere on the property from time to time. Further, it is possible that all the LEEs were locally identified with Ditchley whether they actually lived there or not. End of Record ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Some notes The Thomas LEE who married (1747) Mary GRIFFIN is cited in the Samuel Griffin Bible (The bible was in the possession (1911) of Griffins of Heathsville, VA). Upon the death of Mary (Griffin) LEE an entry states that she was the wife of Thomas LEE of Ditchley. The inference here is that Thomas was of the LEEs of Virginia, as Ditchley Hall was the LEE family clan seat. Years of unproved assertions muddle the material available. At the time Richard and Judith (Steptoe) LEE were in possession of the Ditchley estate. Richard inherited the estate because his older brother, William, did not meet the conditions of the will of Hancock LEE, their father. William did not have a legitimate male heir. Richard and Judith LEE are often cited as parents of Thomas LEE of Ditchley, but this is untrue as they never had a son, Thomas. It is quite possible that Thomas LEE of Ditchley was related to Richard and Judith as there is evidence of other LEE children being born at Ditchley, but were of different LEE family lines. The mystery remains as to the identity of the parents of Thomas LEE of Ditchley. A second leap of faith has been made to identify Thomas of Ditchley as Captain Thomas LEE (RS) of NC. There are lots of assertions, but there is no evidence. Thomas of Ditchley disappears after 1758 (death of his wife) and Thomas LEE of NC conveniently appears. The DAR Patriot Index carries this assertion to show that Capt Thomas LEE (RS-NC) who married Mary GRIFFIN, also married Mary BRYAN. Interestingly, the DAR account does not recognize Captain Thomas LEE's last wife who survived him, Mary (Ingram) RAINS (widow). This, as you know, is in conflict with the finding that Captain Thomas LEE (RS-NC) was the son of John LEE (JLX). ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
