Johnston County, NC - William & Henry Guy, 1799 ~~~~~~~~~~ North Carolina Smithfield, March 20 On the night of the 10th inst, a vessel building by Mr. Wm. Guy, near Smithfield, was set on fire by some villain and entirely consumed. This was the first vessel ever built so high up Neuse, being 100 miles by land from Newburn, and more than 200 by water. It was nearly completed, 195 tons burthen, and was expected to have been launched in the course of two or three weeks. Messrs. William and Henry Guy have already laid the keel of another vessel at the same place designed for 170 tons, most of the timber which is now in readiness. It will be a spectacle as interesting as it will be novel, to see a vessel of such magnitude floating for 250 miles on waters which have heretofore been navigated only by small boats and canoes. (In a swell of the river and this may easily be effected) Source: Federal Galaxy, May 7, 1799 ______________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
