February Term 1863

To the Sheriff of Johnston County Greeting: Whereas Susannah Eldridge widow of 
Troy Eldridge lately filed her petition in the Court of Pleas and Quarter 
Sessions against Erastus Eldridge, Kenneth Eldridge, Martha Eldridge, Luther 
Eldridge and Emily Eldridge heirs at law of her said husband and it was 
ordered by the court that a writ of dower should be issued to the Sheriff in 
her behalf as to the following lands, tenements and hereditiments in said 
county of which her said husband died seized and possessed, to wit:
One tract of land situate in said county adjoining the lands of Powell 
Blackman, John Eldridge, Leaman Lee and others and containing by estimation 
about three hundred acres. These are therefore to command you to summons five 
freeholders connected with the parties neither by consanguinity nor affinity 
and entirely disinterested who after being duly sworn by you are to allot and 
set apart to the said Susannah Eldridge by proper metes and bounds one third 
of all the said lands, tenements and hereditaments including outhouses, 
buildings and improvements thereto belonging or in any way appertaining during 
her natural life and to put her in possession of the same; and the allotment 
of dower made by the said jury after being reduced into writing and signed by 
them you are to return to our next court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions to be 
held for the county of Johnston at the court house in Smithfield on the fourth 
Monday of May next together with their writ.
Witnesses Thomas D Snead Clerk of said court at office in Smithfield the 
fourth Monday of February AD 1863. Reissued March 12, 1863.
