Johnston County, NC - Bruton Family and Neighbors ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ N.C. Secretary of State, Land Grant Office, Warrants, Plats, etc. Johnston County File No. 1-1162. [N.C. State Archives, Reel Call Number S.108.751] Some comments on the records that follow. The initial form contains the entry number, county, name, acres, grant number, date grant issued, warrant number, entry number, date entered, book number, page number, location, and remarks. There were almost no entries for grant number, warrant number, and few entries for entry number. What follows are typically the warrant in which the government instructs the surveyor to do a survey and a brief description of the land, then the actual land plat, followed by the copy of the back of the initial warrant to do a survey on which the surveyor notes when he did it, for whom, the quantity (number of acres), and the names of the two people who helped him as his chain bearers to actually survey the land. On the warrant itself, it states that the Surveyor must make two just and fair plans, with a proper certificate attached to each, which he was to return to the Secretary's office within 12 months from the date of the warrant. If the warrantee does not within 18 months from the date of the warrant, take out a patent for the land, the warrant, and all proceedings thereon, become void and of no force, and the said land was deemed vacant and free to be taken up by any other person.
