Tillman, Jr. 1924-34 Avenue Meridian, Mississippi Dear Sir: The data which follow were obtained from papers in pension claim W.23666, based upon service in the Revolutionary War of Asa Bryan. Date and place of birth of Asa Bryan and names of parents are not shown. Asa Bryan, sometime before the battle of Guilford, was captain in the militia of Johnston County, North Carolina and was frequently called out in "minutemen" service, at one time to Wilmington, was in actual service for three months. He served another tour under Captain Hardy Bryan, during which said Hardy Bryan was elected to the General Assembly of North Carolina and said Asa Bryan became captain of his company, service of this tour was about ten months during which he was in the battle of Guilford. He served subsequently in the "minutemen" service and was out on frequent tours against the Tories. No relationship shown between Asa and Hardy Bryan. Asa Bryan died in June 1823. Asa Bryan married in 1778, in Johnston County, North Carolina, Ann Lee. The marriage bond was dated August 18, 1778, and signed by Asa Bryan and James Lee. No relationship between Ann and James Lee shown. Ann Bryan, widow of Asa Bryan was allowed pension on her application executed April 22, 1845, at which time she was in her eighty-fifth year and a resident of Johnston County, North Carolinal. In 1845, Ann Bryan stated that her oldest child, Lewis Bryan, was then aged sixty-five years, and her next child, Mary, wife of Jonathan Wood, was aged sixty-three years. Ann Bryan, widow of Asa Bryan, died January 6, 1847, and in 1851, Mary Wood, the only surviving child was a resident of Cumberland County, North Carolina. In 1845, William Bryan, youngest brother of Asa Bryan was in his eighty-fifth year and a resident of Johnston County, North Carolina. One Lemon H. Lee stated in 1851, in Cumberland County, North Carolina, that he was well acquainted with Ann Bryan, widow of Captain Asa Bryan, but did not state his relationship to the family.
