John Whitley's Company under command of Col. Arthur Bryan on the North Carolina line. He was at the Battle of Briar Creek but did not participate. In 1780 he served as acting orderly sergeant during a second term in the Militia under Capt. Edmond Griffin . He often served on scouting missions and as intelligence gatherer. He was marched to Wilmington, N.C. where he became ill with a severe case of smallpox and nearly died. He spent much of the three months confined in a hospital. WILLIAM BRYAN was one of three brothers, all sons of LEWIS BRYAN, who "fought on behalf of freedom." His family lived in the southernmost portion of Johnson County and was known as the Bryans of Milk Creek to distinguish them from another family of Bryans who lived to the north on Swift Creek. His brothers, were ASA BRYAN (born in 1750) a Captain, and JOHN, born 1753. John died in Georgia. William Bryan was born on Aug. 3, 1760. He was 85 years old when he appeared on April 25, 1845 to petition for pension. In testimony he said his brother, Asa Bryant had died about 1825 and that John Bryant died about 1815. Asa Bryan 's widow lived in Cumberland in 1845. The name of William Bryan's wife was not known but the children who survived him were named: 1) H. Bryan 2) Janet Bryan 3) Joseph Bryan 4) Eliza Bryan 5) Joanna Thornton. William Bryan died 11 Feb. 1845.
