Molton House of Representatives State of Oklahoma Tulsa, Oklahoma Dear Sir: Reference is made to your letter in which you request information in regard to Thomas G. Bizzell, who was an officer in the Revolutionary War and, you believe, drew a pension. There is no claim for pension or bounty land on file which was made to the United States based upon service of a Thomas Bizzell, under any spelling of the surname. The record has been found of a Thomas Cole of North Carolina whose widow married Thomas Bizzell. The data which follow were obtained from that claim for pension W.5824, based upon service of Thomas Cole, and may aid you in your research. Thomas Cole enlisted November 26, 1776 in North Carolina (probably Johnston County), served as private and corporal in Captain Caswell's company, 5th North Carolina regiment and was discharged February 8, 1780. Thomas Cole married in August 1788, Amy Joiner, the daughter of Joel Joiner; the name of her mother was not given. The license for said marriage and dated August 1, 1788, was recorded in Johnston County, North Carolina, and was signed by Thomas Cole and Willis Cole; no relationship between Willis Cole and the soldier was stated. Amy's father served seven years as a soldier, was in the service at the time of her birth, afterwards served three years as a volunteer to subdue the Indians and Tories. Thomas Cole died about the year 1824, exact date not given. Amy Cole, this soldier's widow, married later, the date not given, Thomas Bizzell. Thomas Bizzell served about six months as an officer in the Revolutionary War; no details regarding his service were given as this claim for pension was not based upon his service. Thomas Bizzell died a few years before 1847, exact date not shown. Amy Bizzell, the widow of Thomas Bizzell, was allowed pension on account of the service of her former husband, Thomas Cole, in the Revolutionary War on her application executed May 14, 1847. She was then aged about seventy-seven years and resided in Johnston County, North Carolina; she had resided in that vicinity ever since her birth, the date of which was not given. She stated that her husband, Thomas Cole, was aged about seventy years at the time of his death. In 1867, she resided in Stevens District, Johnston County, North Carolina. The oldest child of Amy and Thomas Cole was born in 1790, name not designated; one son, James Cole, died when young; Thomas Cole, Jr., was living in 1847, aged about fifty years; another child was deceased in 1847, name not stated. In 1857, William G. Bizzell, the son of Thomas and Amy Bizzell, resided in Bentonsville, North Carolina; his age was not given. One Thomas G. Bizzell resided in Smithfield, Johnston County, North Carolina, in 1854, no relationship to the family stated. In 1847, James Cole, the younger brother of Thomas Cole (the soldier) was a resident of Johnston County, North Carolina, aged eighty-seven years. In 1867, Willis Cole, Senior, resided in Johnston County, North Carolina; he was present when Amy Bizzell made affidavit in regard to her pension. In order to obtain the date of last payment of pension, name of person paid and, possibly, the date of death of this pensioner, you should apply to the Comptroller General, General Accounting Office, this city and furnish the following data: Amy Bizzell (name shown on the pension roll), formerly widow of Thomas Cole, Certificate #5793, issued November 5, 1851, rate $86.39 per annum, commenced March 4, 1848, Act of February 2, 1848, North Carolina Agency.
