Hollingsworth Edgefield, South Carolina Dear Madam: Reference is made to your letter relative to Joel Dees, a soldier of the Revolutionary War and to William Dees, a soldier in the Mexican War. The data contained herein are obtained from the papers on file in pension claim R.2841, based upon the Revolutionary War service of Joel Deese or Dees. He was born April 14, 1749 in Johnston County, North Carolina. He alledged that while residing in said county, he volunteered in 1776 and served under General Marion, was in an engagement at Brown Marsh under Colonel Wingette, was at the battle of Guilford Court House, marched to Yorktown and was in the battle there and capture of Cornwallis, under General Lafayette. After the Revolution he lived in Edgefield District, South Carolina about fifteen years, when he moved to Richmond County, Georgia, and then moved to Baldwin County, Alabama. He applied for pension March 4, 1842, then a resident of Baldwin County, Alabama. The claim was not allowed as he failed to furnish specific proof of six months service. He died March 28 or 29, 1846 in Baldwin County, Alabama. His son, James, was a resident of Baldwin County, Alabama in 1858. There are no further data relative to his family.
