Johnston County, NC - Joseph Gurley Revolutionary War Record ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ HeritageQuest Online Series: M805; Roll: 383 Image: 571; File: W4973 [Following record contained in pension record] October 4, 1928 Honorable Hugo L. Black United States Senate Washington, DC My dear Senator: In response to your letter of the 29th ultimo, with two enclosures from Mrs. E.F. Walker of Gurley, Alabama, I have the honor to advise you that the Revolutionary War records of this bureau fail to afford any information in regard to any soldiers named Ephraim and William Gurley, nor do the War of 1812 records of this bureau afford any data in regard to pension having been claimed on account of the services of any soldiers named Ephraim and Joseph Gurley or to a William Gurley of North Carolina. You are herewith furnished the history of the only soldier named Joseph Gurley found on the Revolutionary War records of this bureau. From the papers in the Revolutionary War pension claim, W.4973, it appears that Joseph Gurley enlisted in September 1781 and served two years and two months in Captain Raiford's North Carolina Company. He died March 10, 1828. The soldier married in January 1780 (the marriage license was issued January 10, 1780) in Johnston County, North Carolina, Mary Carter. She was allowed pension on her application executed January 6, 1845, while living in Johnston County, North Carolina, aged ninety-one years. There are no data as to children. Very truly yours, Winfield Scott Commissioner ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
