Johnston County, NC - Jeremiah Gurley Revolutionary War Record ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ HeritageQuest Online Series: M805; Roll: 383 Image: 565; File: S13231 [Following record contained in pension record] July 13, 1932 Mary Cornelia Cole West Point, Mississippi Dear Madam: Reference is made to your letter in which you request information in regard to Jeremiah Gurley, a Revolutionary War pensioner. The data furnished herein were obtained from the papers on file in pension claim S.13231, based upon the military service of Jeremiah Gurley, during the Revolutionary War. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Gurley, and was born December 29, 1759 in Johnson [sic] County, North Carolina. He enlisted sometime in February, 1781 and served as a private in Captains Hardy Bryan's and Asa Bryan's company, Colonel Eaton's North Carolina regiment, was in the battle of Guilford Court House, and in the battle of Camden under Colonel Read, was discharged May 13, 1781. He served about two months as a trooper in Captain Lewis Gurley's Company of Light Horse, and was discharged Autust 7, 1781, the said Lewis Gurley was the soldier's brother. He served fifteen or twenty days as a trooper in Colonel Benjamin Exum's Regiment of North Carolina troops. He served from sometime in 1781, about one year under Colonel Robert Rayford. He was allowed pension on his application executed October 30, 1832, at which time he was living near Brownsboro, Madison County, Alabama. It is stated that he moved in 1817 from Maury County, Tennessee, with his family, to Madison County, Alabama. It is not stated whether soldier was married. In order to obtain the date of last payment of pension, the name of person paid and possibly the date of death of the pensioner, Jeremiah Gurley, you should apply to the Comptroller General, General Accounting Office, Records Division, Washington, D.C., citing all of the following data - Jeremiah Gurley Certificate number 19995 Issued October 7, 1833 Rate $57.08 per annum Commenced March 4, 1831 Act of June 7, 1832 Alabama Agency Very truly yours, A.D.
