Term 1832 On this 27 day of August 1832 personally appeared in open court before the Justice of the Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessons now sitting, Robert Sterling, a resident of the County of Johnston and State of N. Carolina, aged 72 years, who being first duly sworn according to Law who on his oath makes the following declatation in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress June 7, 1832 = That he entered the Service of the United States under the following said officers termed as herein Stated. 1st That he was drafted in Wayne Co. N.C. and placed under command of Captain Sessions for three months service and went down to Wilmington to guard the town against the Scorpion, a British vessel. The Declarant cannot remember in what year he was drafted but it was several years after commencement of the war -- He spent the whole three months in Wilmington & Brunswick, and at the epiration of said term he was discharged by Capt. Sessions -- His lieutenant he believes to be Jno. Grant. 2nd He was drafted for a second service of six months -- he believes about a year after his first discharge and served under Capt. Kennedy, Lieut. Wilson & Ensign Lassiter -- He was marched through South Carolin to Georgia and passed through Georgia and spent some five days at Augusta and marched down the Savannah River to Brier Creek -- he was there under command of Gen. Ashe, Colo. [___] & Capt. Kennedy. After the Battle of Brier Creek the declarant was marched to Wilmington, N.C. where he received a regular and honorable discharge from Capt. Kennedy after having served fully and faithfully the term of six months. 3rd A few months after the expiration of this his second term of service he engaged again in the service of his country by ballot -- and was placed at Johnston, N.C., under command of Capt. Armstrong of the Continental Service. He was taken to Lewisburgh in N.C. thence to Dan River. Also he was placed under command of Capt. Rhodes n South Carolina -- Gen. Green commanding -- Curtis Ivey was Adjutant - He was at the battle of Eutaw Srings -- He was dismissed at the Banks of the Santee after a service of 2 [12? ed.] months from the date of his third enlistment. He was honorably discharged by Capt. Rhodes at the battle of Eutaw Springs. He remembers Colo. Washington of the Light Horse -- He has no documentary evidence of service -- and knows no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his service. He hereby relinquishes any claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and also claims that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid. ******* In answer to the Interrogatories Prescribed by the War Department -- The Declarant states -- that he is 72 years old -- That he knows no record of his age -- That he was living in Wayne Co., N.C. where he was called into Service and that he now lived in Wayne until about 14 years ago when he removed to Johnston where he now resides -- the other answers for the Interrogatories he deems embodied in his statement -- Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid Test Rm Sanders Clk Robert [his X mark] Sterling ******* We Wesley F. Wellons and Nasareth Sterling residents of the County of Johnston do hereby certify that we are well acquainted with Robert Sterling who has subscribed and sworn to the above Declaration; that we believe him to be about 72 years of age, that he is reputed and believed in the neighborhood which he resides to have been a soldier of the Revolution and has served as he states and that we concur in that opinion. Sworn to and subscribed this day and year aforesaid -- W F Wellons Nasry Sterling And the said Court do hereby declare their opinion after the investigation of the matter and after putting the Interrogatories prescribed by the War Department, that the above sworn applicant was a Revolutionary Soldier & served as he states -- And the court further certifies that it appears to them that Wesley F.
