The Semi-Weekly Messenger (Wilmington NC) 16 November 1897 November 16, 1897
Monday night about a mile below Smithfield, a man by the name of John Moore was
run over and horribly mangled by an Atlantic Coast Line freight train, which
passes here about 11:30 o'clock. Moore was returning from a brother's house
about two miles above here, and he is supposed to have been drinking and asleep
on the track when the train struck him.
