Barbour was born June 11, 1839, and died Aug. 13, 1910, making his stay on earth 71 years, 2 months and 2 days. He had been in feeble health for some time, but with all that his loving wife, obedient children, kind neighbors and good doctor could do, they could not stay the hand of death. On January 1, 1860 he was married to Miss Smithy Godwin and from this union there were born six children, two boys and four girls, of which three daughters survive him, his youngest daughter having died in infancy and his two boys in their youth. Not long after his marriage, in obedience to the call of the Southland, he took up arms in its defence and went through that terrible war with Company I, 24th North Carolina Regiment, and while away in that bloody conflict small-pox took from him his two darling little boys - the only children at that time. He has ever been true and faithful soldier in evey work of life to which he has been called. For many years he was a member of the Freewill Baptist church at Johnson's Chapel but united with the Primitive Baptist church at Hannah's Creek about two months before he was called home. In his death his church loses a good member, his wife a loving husband, his children a kind father and his neighbors a faithful friend as he was ever ready to lend a helping hand to those who were in distress. He is survived by a wife, one sister, Mrs. Louisa Jernigan, two brothers, John W. Barbour and Seth B. Barbour, and three daughters, Mrs. J. I. Ryals, Mrs. Z. B. Woodall and Mrs. B. R. Moore to mourn their loss. He was buried at Hannah's Creek cemetery on Sunday afternoon, August 14, 1910, amidst a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. A dear one from us is gone, A voice from us is stilled, A place is vacant in our hearts, That never can be filled.
