Johnston County, NC - Obituary of Lawrence Cogdell, 1975 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Young Guilford Official, Native of Johnston, Dies Lawrence Cogdell of Greensboro, a 33 year old native of Johnston County, died late Thursday in Moses Cone Hospital at Greensboro, where he had been a patient for two weeks. Mr. Cogdell had been budget director of Guilford County for the past two years. Death was attributed to acute renal failure, a condition which was diagnosed a year ago. Since then he had undergone kidney dialysis treatment twice a week. He was graduated from high school in Smithfield and from A&T State University, where he majored in accounting and minored in mathematics and economics. From 1965 until 1968 he lived in Washington, DC, where he did graduate work in governmental accounting at American University, worked as an accountant, and was in the federal Youth Economic Enterprise program. For the next three years, he was an accountant for Montgomery County, MD He was employed by Guiford County in March 1971 as budget officer and internal auditor. He was promoted to the position of budget director in July 1973. Last year he was named County Employee of the Year. Guilford County Manager John Witherspoon said he was deeply affected by Mr. Cogdell's death. "He was an outstanding man, both in character and ability." Mr. Witherspoon said "the fact that he was named by his fellow employees as Employee of the Year, indicated how significant a loss this man is to Guilford County." The funeral was held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon in Trinity AME Zion Church. The Rev. J.R. Woodward officiated. Entombment followed in Guilford Memorial Park. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. John Puryear Cogdell; two sons, Melvin Wesley and Lawrence Cogdell II; two daughters, Angela and Cheryl Cogdell; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Cogdell of Wayne County; four sisters, Mrs. Parthenia Smith of Willingboro, N.J., Mrs. Eutean Redding of Colorada Springs, Colo., Mrs. Golria Eldridge of Pascalaway, N.J., and Miss Wanda Jean Cogdell of Greensboro; and two brothers, Nathan E. Cogdell of East Point, Ga., and Pvt. Dwight Cogdell at Fort Ord, Calif. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
