Johnston County, NC - Obituary of D.J. Rose, 1940 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Smithfield Herald Friday, May 10, 1940 Local Citizens Attend Rites for D.J. Rose Friends and relatives here attended the funeral of D.J. Rose in Rocky Mount Thursday morning. Mr. Rose, who was 78 years of age and had been in failing health for a year, died Wednesday morning. Mr. Rose was a native of Johnston County having been born near Bentonville in 1861. In 1891 he went to Rocky Mount where he lived until his death. He was a leading contractor in Eastern Carolina for 50 years. He was twice married and each time to a native of Johnston County. His first wife was Miss Anna Woodall, a sister of Mrs. T.R. Hood, J.H. Woodall and Mrs. Mary W. Myatt of this city. Surviving that union are two children, Mrs. Boddie Ward of Wilson and Ira Woodall Rose of Rocky Mount. His second wife was Miss Vara Benton, a sister of Mrs. L.D. Wharton of this city. She survives together with one son, Dillon J. Rose of Rocky Mount. Mrs. Thel Hooks, Mrs. H.C. Hood, Mrs. Lucy Coltrane and Miss Ava Myatt were among those who went to Rocky Mount Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. L.D. Wharton has been with his sister for several years. Among those from Smithfield attending the funeral yesterday morning were Sheriff Kirby L. Rose, a nephew of the deceased, Mrs. Rose, Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Hood, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Woodall, Miss Stella Woodall, Dr. and Mrs. Watson Wharton and Mr. and Mrs. Noah Lee.
