Johnston County, NC - Obituary of Mrs. Kirby L. Rose, 1966 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tuesday, October 18, 1966 Mrs. Kirby L. Rose of Smithfield died Sunday night in Johnston Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. She was a native of Johnston County. She was the former Ruth King, daughter of the late John Anderson & Sarah Catherine Lassiter King of Elevation Township. She married Kirby L. Rose in 1915. Her husband was elected sheriff in 1938 & served continuously until his death in February of 1945. For a few years after the death of her husband, Mrs. Rose lived in Elizabeth City. She had been in the insurance business in Smithfield for many years. For a number of years she served as home services secretary for the Johnston County Chapter of the American Red Cross. She was one of the earliest members of the First Christian Church of Smithfield. She was a member of the Smithfield Woman's Club & had served the club as president. She had served as district president of the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs. She was instrumental in having classes in home economics established in the Smithfield School. The funeral was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the chapel of Underwood Funeral Home, with Dr. Albert G. Edwards & the Rev. John Browning officiating & interment following in Sunset Memorial Park. Mrs. Rose is survived by one son, Robert L. Rose of Charlotte; two daughters, Mrs. Nicholas Pines of Port Washington, NY, & Mrs. Lindsey Hopkins of Raleigh; one brother, John W. King of Goldsboro; three sisters, Mrs. Jack Hamilton of Smithfield, Mrs. F.E.
